new set of traps
« on: Nov 09, 2018, 08:18 PM »
Got me a set of new traps.
Red Oak. Stainless hardware (except for the wingnuts and reels).
1500' line capacity.
Adjustable drag.
Can't wait to give'em a try.

In Minnesota we can only have a max of 2 lines, tipups included. How many lines can you have in Maine?

On most lakes we can have 5 lines. Some lakes have a two line restriction.

Those look nice!  I’m more of a jigger, so the tip ups I have are cheap little flat plastic things I lend to friends lol. Though I’ve thought about getting a set of nicer ones, at least so I we can actually see the flags. Very cool that your making your own, more hobbies to go with the passion.

15 lines on Lake Champlain. I've never fished there but I would like the challenge of tending that many traps.

I’d just do some extra holes and follow the school based on other people’s flags with a jig rod lol.

I'm usually pulling my hair out attending to 6 traps let alone 15...

I totally agree with you. Only when I’m out with my friends, they don’t count perch and sunfish lol. Bass fishermen  ::) though more often than not I’m catching something when they and others are just waiting for flags and checking bait.

I had been thinking about building some traps for a long time.  I finally put a work area together in the basement and started this project last spring.
I have owned and used Heritage Lakers, Jack Traps, one Indian Hills a some small plastic one (I forget their manufacturer).

I liked certain things about all of my traps, but didn't like all of the things about one particular trap, so I made a Frankenstein trap.
I used red oak, some traps I painted other I just stained.

I bought some of parts because it was just easier and faster than starting from scratch (flags assemblies from HL, 1500 yd reels from HT).
The rest I bought from Grainger/online metals/boltsandnuts.com ....; paint and spar from HomeDesperate.
I used stainless steel tubing, stainless steel wire on all of them.  One the ones I wanted to use all stainless (except the flag),
I found the nuts, bolts and washers, etc.  I used nylon locking wing nuts on the upright and cross members, and on the reel bolt.
The wing nuts are chromed but I would like to find stainless locking wing nuts.  I also used some white plastic spacers and washers (for the drag).

The flag release is much like an Indian Hill, a semi-circular hook, but I am hoping I do not need the "flag guide wires" on each side of the flag wire
near the hook, and not suffer from wind flags.

Product testing this winter will help me refine my design.

I can't wait to catch a fish on a trap I made....kind of like catching a fish on fly you've tied....naw. I bet it's better!

Cheers,
MD

Totally throwing me here calling what I know as a tip up a trap. Trap makes me think of leg traps for animals. Yeh I wish I could run more than two lines in MN but I doubt I'd want more than 5.

Every pond and every day are different. There have been times when I was running to keep up with two traps and other days when I as bored  watching five with no flags.

Only with the salt water version.  ;)

With +100' depths, and monster togue that can strip off the line like no tomorrow, when the trap is about 3/4 of a mile away, even with a snow sled, it takes a few "seconds" to get to the trap.
The extra line gives the fisherman a fighting chance.

It also gives the fish a chance to tangle with other traps in the area.

That's assuming there are other traps in the area.  ;)
