Small piece of a paper match in a slip knot.
I use wooden matchsticks with some hitch knot. I don't know what the name of it would be.
I change depths from trip to trip and can go from 40 feet to 80 feet. I don't want to slide a button through 40 feet of line on a 10 below zero day !
You're not sliding the button. You just hold onto the button and the line slips through it. When the line is straight it holds the button in place. Doesn't take any extra effort and the button doesn't move unless I move it.
Larkshead?
I also use buttons and found the key is to find one large enough where it does not spin your line when moving it up or down yet small enough not to catch the line spooling off. However, as i type this i realize why not just cut the edges off the button so there is less surface area. Might give this a shot next season.
What if you were fishing 80 feet and next time out you are at 40 feet -do you slide the button then ?
