I've been tinkering with the bench again. Decided to make use of that blank wall that was in front of me.
Storage

It's getting there. Hope to finish the floor this weekend.

Your bench is coming along quite well, I would have to put some kind of dowels in that cutting board, so I had places to put the bobbins I was using but not right this second.  Its sad to say Im happy that someone else is as O.C.D. about their trying area as I am.

Seems it's always changing a little here or there. I like to be able to find the things I want without rummaging. I'll tie on it for a while and see how it goes, but it feels pretty comfortable.

Rg if you are looking for any adult children to adopt, i will send over my resume. Your fly area is truly drool worthy.  I understand almost everything you have set up there. My one question is why so many scissors?  I thought my wife had a large amount for her sewing, but you have twice what she does! I understand curved blades/straight blades, some for harder materials, others for fine, but you sure seem to have a lot out and ready.

If you're wondering why I'm up at this hour, the full moon and perfectly clear skies took exact aim at my pillow through the bedroom window. Kinda like trying to sleep with an aircraft landing light in my face. Thought I'd check in before curling up on my comfy couch till morning.

Second only to your brain, scissors are your most important tying tool.

Anyway, yes, I have a lot of scissors. There's more actually. I don't use my tying scissors to cut stuff like wire,  foam or thin skin which has a paper backing (cutting paper is a death sentence for fine scissors) . I have a few pairs of utility scissors for those purposes. So in answer to your question, I'm a tool guy. I've got lots of tools for the things I do. I've never found one pair of scissors that would cut all the different materials we use with equal efficiency so I just started buying them as I found them. I mostly use Dr Slick scissors. I have Gingher's, Fiskars and a few with no names.

If I had deeper pockets I'd be using Sajou or Dovo scissors. But the Dr Slick's cut pretty well and are comfortable to use. I've tried Anvil, Tiemco, Orvis, Loon.....even tried some Mark Pettijean at a show once. They didn't feel like $100 scissors to me.

I think in time most of my tools are going to end up in front of me on that little wall I'm building. I kinda like them there. ;D

Enjoy your thanksgiving with your family and friends everyone! Remember to take a moment to thank those who put their lives on the line to provide the freedom and safety we take for granted every day!

Here's the latest scud pattern I've been playing with.
Lead foil tape, cut with a fabric cutter. I use lightweight vinyl shower curtain for scud back. It cuts nicely with the fabric cutter .

Build  a tapered lead body and center a red glass bead

Start thread behind the bead, tie in a small clump of mallard flank, 4 lb. green stren for rib and strip of scud back. Dub to the bead.

Bring the scud back and rib forward, secure it behind the bead. Then, finish to the head. Tease out some fibers for legs.

Ties pretty quickly and looks pretty good.

So I added this LED light a while back. I liked the light but not the arm. Also I found that I was having some problems focusing on the fly with a kind of busy background. So, I decided it was time for a profile plate. Aft looking at the provides and design of most of the OEM stuff, I made my own. Last think I wanted was something that attached to the vise. No need for additional clutter.

Found a couple of flexible USB fans for $.50 each in the bargain aisle at Wally World. Then it was time for more fun with magnets. First thing I did was remount the light.

Before

After

A bit of tinkering later

Now I can quick change background colors. So far I like the tan and blue best.

Fun tinkering.

Well, now I will have to remove the single hooks I have on a couple #2 Swedish Pimples and tie one on!  Might be just the trick for panfish. @)

I like them on a Hali, pimple or Kastmaster, but mostly I'll fish them as a dropper above a tungsten jig. I got some new material in the mail yesterday and the midge jaws for my vise should be here today. More stuff to play with ;D

Thanks. I like playing with work areas almost as much as tying and building rods. I've built several shops in my years. It's always a challenge to blend form, function and space.

Anyway, I finally got the midge jaws for my new vise.

Standard jaws with a #16 scud

Midge jaws, same scud

It holds smaller hooks rock solid.

I tied a few scuds to test it out

I like it. Lots of working room around the hook.

Yup.....one of my favorites Trapper. Here's another one I've been working on.

I like the ostrich herl for body material. The red flash stripe on the back has to be good.

You ought to get a vise Bill. You have all that free time now ;D

Awesome bench and great tying. Moving into the new place Tuesday and I can't wait to get started on my workshop and learn.
