Post by: quack on Nov 01, 2018, 02:32 PM
I know we've been burned on these forcasts before but we can hope!

well news 8 in grand rapids just predicted on a snowier and colder winter, they were spot on last year with their prediction

So long as it gets colder before snowier.... heavy snow before good, thick ice does not usually bode well for safe conditions.

I take it day by day..i will believe it when I see it.hope for cold first to get a good  solid 4" or more of black ice before the heavy snowfall screws it up like every year in Allegan co.sorry but im not optimistic after the last bunch of short icefishing seasons.ice, thaw, ice, heavy lake effect  snow, thunderstorms, thaw and repeat..

Not to worry.  I sold my snowmobile so there will be plenty of ice.

I'm a pessimist... either I'm right or very pleasantly surprised.  ;)

I'm sorry to disappoint you pessimists, but this optimist says we will have fishable ice...in December...in SW Michigan...count on it. By the way, under any other circumstances, I'm a realist.  ;D

It hasn't been all that uncommon over the past 10-15 yrs to have fishable ice in December. Problem is it tends to vanish nearing the New Year  and doesn't recover all that well from a safety stand point. Put me in the optimist group with a healthy dose of reality tossed in, it'll be what it will be.

Yeah....that would be my luck.  Tons of snow and the bay frozen completely over.  Two days after selling it my wife saw me looking at used sleds.  Walked out of the room mumbling to herself while shaking her head.  ;D

Well all I can say is the great lake are cold already!  and ready to freeze!!  I think the highest temp I seen on huron was top temp of 50*f??   most of its 48*f to 44*f and dropping..  well 32*f minus 48*f is 16*f difference.. wich is not much to go to walk on hard water..  in the shallows of sag bay there looking at 40 to 44 temps cause the shallower water cooled faster..

Just looking at lake temps have not even looked at lake michigan  yet..  dont fish there much that was dang cold in June-july  though.. also inland lakes are shallower then great lakes..  so they freeze early then the deeper lakes..  so keep that in mind..  we wI'll probably be on solid ice very soon..  but if it last that's the other question??

Well being as I live in Grayling which has become the coldest place in the lower peninsula over the years, I'll say we will have good ice first week in Dec. Starting Friday the temps will drop like a rock. Highs for the week will be in the 20's. Love the sound of a good pressure crack!

Yup, bottom is dropping out here on Friday. We'll ride out some river fishing for Atlantics & Steelhead... then transition for some Whitefish & Walleye at the mouth. Hoping for a better season than last year.

Starting Friday and the 5 days following look to be a step in the right direction...high's in the 30's, lows in the 20's with little snow. Can we say Dec.1st.

My favorite lake is locked up and had animal tracks in the snow on top.

This weekend (Sunday to be exact) would tie the earliest I’ve ever been on the ice in Michigan.

Won't be long. Low for tonight will be 17, and 20's for tomorrow. Small lakes here will start to skim over soon.

I've already seen some canals, ponds, and even smaller shallow lakes partially and fully skimed over a couple of mornings. All south of 96

Same here yesterday...near the Allegan/K'zoo county line. Temps are supposed remain steady for the next week...highs around 40, lows in the 20's, dusting of snow now and then. The wind is what's killing it though...needs to calm down.

Can't wait for tomorrow's NOAA Climate Prediction Update

I'm hoping for a big change toward a  more frigid forecast

I read that too! If it continues, going to be even colder next year. (So I read)
Shoot we had snow for opener of rifle, haven't had that in a while.
Looking at long range, might be able to fish around first week of December on some lakes(mid Michigan)
Hardy pond already had ice forming! Dang!
