Title: Can’t be too much longer....
Post by: Crappielover89 on Oct 06, 2019, 09:08 PM
Went to the Unitas today and lakes had a half inch of ice a foot to two feet wide around edges. Let’s hope Wednesday and Thursdays single and negative lows lock some of the smaller lakes up!!!

We seen some similiar stuff in the ponds around the whitney area this weekend also. It was definately cold up there but there was only one night with no wind so hopefully that will stay away and allow them to cap.

Looks like Wednesday and Thursday it will really get cold, so who knows maybe early November will work this year... not sure a couple nights will get it thick enough for my oversized frame to float, but probably will be ready before I am this year... Later J

Wow.  You guys are lucky!

First ice in late October (or even early November) is really early.

Out here in my neck of the woods (NW MA) (which is the first portion of the State to ice over), first ice on ponds in the upper elevations (about 2,500 feet above sea level) doesn't occur until around Thanksgiving in "good" years.

When do ponds "ice out" out your way?

For comparison, last ice in NW MA (again, in good years) takes place in early to mid April.

Hey bogtrotter our ice can be good up till mid march-mid april just depending how the spring thaw is. You can also get on lakes in the high country later but it requires sleds to get up that high. The lakes we get on 1st ice set at about 10,000ft above sea level which is why they ice up early. It can be one hell of a work out at that elevation if your not used to it for sure.

I've been up 4 times in the last week and a half and this Sunday I walked on water........ there was 2 inches of ice on the lake for 20yds then the rest of the lake was 1 1/2 inches. Went up tonight 10/15/19 and all the ice was gone  >:(  good thing is the ice should be back this next week and temps are supposed to stay cold here on out so we will see.........

Those teaser temps sure got me fired up. I hope it drops back down soon as I'm only 15 days out from my 1st ice date and would really like to beat it this year but my big but will need a little more than 2in  @)

I walked on ice last Sunday and by Tuesday the warm and wind stacked it back on the banks

the lakes should be locked back up this week with the temps that we have coming. we went up today and there is 2 feet of snow and snow drifts up to 6 feet deep....... watch out for those ones they take a good min or 45 to dig out of...... be safe and take all the right equipment with you to make sure you can be safe and get out of any sticky situation you get into.
