They sure look like the way to go. Has any had any experience with these? I just wonder if this is a product to hook more fish, or maybe to hook more ice fishermen.
-
I cant help you out right now, but I took the plunge this morning and orderd some so, by the end of this year I should be able to answer your question....Im interested in the quality of the product, ease of use, and of course...did it put fish on the ice...time will tell...damn Thorne Bros site always costs me money

OK, Ill bite. What are Reel weeds?
-
They are an artificial weed that is attached to a line. You drop it to the bottom and create instant structure. You can check them out at www.reelweeds.com. It has a weight at the bottom and a float on top. sounds like a great idea, specially if you are fishing a lake that doesn't have much for structure.
-
Interesting... Always nice to learn something new.... Thanks.
-
My take... ::)
How about finding the structure that already exists.
-
I agree! Natural structure would be best. However I guess it depends on the body of water you are fishing. Where I was catching the fish last year I don't believe there was any structure. I was fishing for perch on a flat in 28' of water and my sonar was showing nothing for structure. As these perch roam around these flats in schools I just can't help but think that if I were to provide them with some shelter, that they would be more likely to stay longer instead of moving on.

anybody have any homemade stuff that works?
i've seen the video on their website, and it sure seems like it would work.
they want just a bit more money than i'm willing to part with for something unknown

I'm sure a guy could make these for a lot less. I was talking to my wife and she suggested going to a aquarium store and picking up some artificial weeds there. Also something like Christmas garland. The problem with the garland is it usually comes attached to a semi stiff wire. Would not work to good for wrapping it up and unrolling it everytime.

Still debating this one. For what it cost, you could make some from craft store items, 100# line and some weights. Then I look at it from a fishes perspective...especial ly the bigger fish. They know their enviroment intimately, all of a sudden, on a flat or something there appears all of this "stuff". What would the bigger fish think about it? Especially if it wasn't there the day before and then is gone the next, only to reappear on the third day? I would think that any thing placed as "structure" would have to develope into "structure" over time with various life forms taking up residence there over time. But who knows.....catch dolphin and such in the ocean hanging around a piece of floating driftwood that has baitfish under it ??? Just .02 worth of thoughts.

:callcops: do they smoke good??? >:D

At $15.00 bucks a strand and 6-8 holes every time I move spots, I think I'll find structure a little cheaper with a topo map.
I could be wrong but it seems like alot of extra work and money just to aviod moving around to find structure or having to chase that school of pannies.
Tight lines,
Wellsy

No but the purchase goes down better with a beer or two.

Lol someone brought the prehistoric reel weeds thread back to life..
-
Apparently they're still alive--must be selling some, though they still can't spell "barren" (see the old video on their site). Would fit right in around here! ;)
-
They may have a place on large featureless flats for pan fish ...especially perch . It can hold them up . If I were to use them I would drill a bunch of holes on the flat ..like I normally would ..and place the "weeds" in the middle with a tip down ..I would also use my camera ..and mark any structure that stands off the bottom ..weeds rocks, stumps etc, . Then fish the flat ..trying to stay with the school ..based on productive holes with structure and added tip downs . How many times have you searched with your camera ..especially on a shallow flat.. and have fish move right up to the camera almost instantly . Fish love structure . though this method is not a run and gun technique ..move of a sit and wait is more the style .

I think MI just legalized this. That's it... :roflmao:

you know, i've been tempted to purchase these just about every year since they came out, but i still haven't pulled the trigger.
the biggest thing holding me back is the thought that i can make a ton of these with a little ingenuity and a bunch of surveying twine. i didn't draw my elk tag this year, so maybe i'll have enough free time to give it a swing before the season starts up

Seems like I did this eons ago
Easy and cheap to make , craft store Fake leafy strings , 2 oz weight and some Dacron
And notch a Piece of pine , made mine 7’ long , I tried them but I didn’t see where it really up my game , just something more to pick up when relocating
Mine are rolled up and in the garage 😃

Pretty much my story except I used a piece of styrofoam ...they may work on large flats to stall fish in your fishing area . When I drop my micro camera down its not to long before the bluegills come in .

Real weeds are always better than those fake ones. Oh...wait...never mind. 😉

What you don't take your Christmas Trees out and deep six them, mark with GPS coordinates and then go back to find the fish later?
-
I was under the impression that sinking Christmas trees was illegal in Idaho under littering laws.
