What size shimano sedona??
« on: Dec 22, 2011, 08:16 AM »
Hi all
I want to purchase two shimano sedonas to put on some jason mitchell 24" walleye rods. My question is do I get the 500 size or 1000 size. I will line the reels up with 6lb. fireline crystal. Thanks

I would put the 500 on a rod that length. I just bought a Sedona 500 for a 29" rod and it fits perfect. You really want to keep the reel weight down as much as possible, the shorter you go on rod length.

Yeah I would deffently get the 500 series for that size rod. I have two of them and I really like them a real nice smooth drag thats has a nice loud click to it

750

Not sure whether they used to or not, but they do not currently make the Sedona in a 750.

not trying to be an a-hole, but he was being sarcastic. i think he was eluding to the fact that something in between a 500 size and a 1000 size would be perfect for the given situation

Not sure if he was being sarcastic or not, but Shimano does and has made many of their reels in a 750 size.

As a matter of fact, it does look like they used to make a Sedona 750. Found a reference to it:

I have that reel on my 36" Deadstick and it's perfect for that rod, but I feel it' a tad big for a 24" rod.

Shimano used to make a Sedona 750 (have them myself) but are currently making the Sedona 500 and discontinued the older 750 version. For ice I prefer the smaller 500 or 750 reels however if you dsire more line capacity a 1000/1500 will work.

The current 1000, were built on the 750 reel body.  Not that it really matters much for ice fishing but the 500's have about 3# of max drag, while the 1000's have about 7# of max drag.

My son and I have a couple of these.  I would go with the 500...I think the drag works fantastic.

Cheers,

I got two two years ago. Actually about stole them, they were put on a clearance rack for $15-20 or possibly less. My father and I use them on our open water walleye rods and they are great reels. I use mine on my laker/walleye ice rod, works awesome. Can't remember the size off hand though, I would go with the smaller 500.
