Whats your culinary ice-fishing talent
« on: Dec 11, 2017, 01:04 PM »
So this year I am thinking of cooking on the ice, maybe make a few breakfast items like steak, ham, eggs with hash-browns, toasted English muffins and coffee!

How do you cook on the ice and what do you make? Photos and recipes welcome.

I eat breakfast in the truck enroute.  Lunch is something I can eat while jigging. Like peanut butter crackers of beef jerky and cheese sticks.

Takes some prep but I will batter fillets in panko crumbs and pan fry. Requires three small Tupperware containers, one for seasoning mix and flour, premixed egg wash, and panko crumbs. Dip fillets in same order, lay in pan with oil (med heat not high), flip when crumbs turn golden brown and drain on paper towel. Works great for perch and trout. Pretty simple actually but people will think you're a god

Slayer, of course, is digging his grave with his teeth. Don't lose track of why you're out there on the ice to start with. Deadsticks, tipups, jawjackers if you fish that way. Then worry about cooking to pass the time. There are some little stoves that break down to nothing. If you can boil water, you can make instant soup or ramen. I wouldn't go overboard. Stay fishing.
Slayer, I had my thoughtful "early ice" thread bumped to the Grumpy Old Men board this morning. That's four for me.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

If I eat something before I go I am good until Dinner that night. Sometimes I do forget to drink enough also. But I try hard to hydrate because of the cramps I get when I don't.

I can eat tomorrow, right now I'm fishing  ;D  I learned a year or two ago that a standard Stanley thermos can be filled with boiling water and will hold just enough water to make 3 cups of noodles.  Add some snack meat like summer sausage or jerky and my 2 boys and I have a pretty good lunch.  That is about all the "cooking" I do on the ice.  Now if I had a wheel house I think things would be different.

If you want hot meals without bringing out a stove. Just add any fluid to start the process .....

i often bring a small propane grill out on the ice. i've done everything from hot dogs and hamburgers, to chicken, to steaks. i like it a lot because i don't need to worry about refrigeration for the meat, and i can set it up a few feet from the hot hole i'm sitting on when lunchtime comes.

on overnight trips, a little propane coleman stove is compact, easy to start, and runs nicely inside a shelter. breakfast is usually instant oatmeal, pop tarts, and hot chocolate; lunch will be some form of soup or pasta, and dinner is usually surf and turf: fresh-caught fish and that year's deer or elk. those overnight trips burn a LOT of calories, so i always make sure to eat large, diverse, filling meals with lots of sugars, protein, and carbs rather than "getting by" with a soda and a bag of chips as i sometimes do on short afternoon expeditions.

Chili, jambalaya, and chicken wild rice soup.  All pre-made at home and simply reheated on the ice.  I'm the lunch chef for our group of 8 on trips.

I usually eat one or fewer meals per day on the ice, but I do enjoy hot meals occasionally. Aside from the standard gas station grab and go food, I like to bring a small stainless sauce pan along to cook things like ramen noodles (crappie fillets added to spicy ramen is top notch), soups, pulled pork, etc. I also have gotten creative and roasted hotdogs over my heater.

Granola Bar for breakfast. No thermos...I like my stuff hot! Original MSR PocketRocket Stove, a small fuel can and a camp coffee pot. With a jug of water you have hot coffee, herbal tea or EmergenC to drink.  Maybe add some jerky, string cheese and a cup of noodles.  All set.  If my son goes I'll reheat chili or brats on the buddy heater but when alone I'm looking to shed weight.

Baked chicken or pork tenderloins and pack it up like jerky.

There's always instant ramen noodles.

My go to is the classic pb & j if I pack food. My other go to is Ice cold barley soup ::)

Funniest thing about ice fishing for me is when people who know nothing about ice activities try to warn me about the dangers of the ice...

I eat the same thing on hardwater or openwater. I eat half a turkey sub, ranch Doritos, and a couple slim jims. For drinks on open water I will have water and coke cola. For hardwater I'll have water and because of the shanty, beer.

If it's just me I pound a man's breakfast before I hit the ice. Then it's a pretty Spartan peanuts or trail mix or jerky. It's time to fish and I can't be interrupted...

For social events it can be anything from brats and burgers with all the fixins to a whole vennie hind quarter on the Weber. Nothing but real coal here, gas is for sissies and bean eaters.  ;)
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

At times I've brought ouy the Colman stove. I've eaten my fair share of burnt eggs. (You want a flag try frying an egg.} j can get my brother out once a year. He's a Chef at one of the casino's and he can get a bit fancy. Once he brought out black bean soup with crème fresh. We got home and where banished to the garage. I have a jet boil I like now. Small, compact and light. Great for a cup of Espresso. May try some of my wifes home made soup in it this year.
