Tip Up bait
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 04:38 PM »
This may have been asked before but I can't find anything on it. I normally use shiners or suckers for my tip ups and the they work well for me on the ice. Does anybody use anything else with any luck?  I'm just trying to get some new ideas as to what to put on my tip ups.

Certain times of year I have had decent luck with dead bait for northern.

Smelt, herring, shad, usually the oily the better.

                   Good Luck!

chicken livers for hybrid stripers - sadly little dink perch sucked them clean as soon as we put them in.

The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

I talked to some guys that have good luck with pike, and they use 12"-15" trout. Dead.

For walleys I use either medium shiners or Two fathead minnows pointing apposite directions on a treble hook I've caught plenty of pike with fathead minnows too. Tried some black tail chubs the last two days and only caught two small eyes on them. Not using them today. The last three days double fatheads have been our go to bait for catching the most eyes.

If its legal where you are fishing for pike. A nine inch plus crappie gets the big ones to bite. I have had them where they did not get the hook and you could almost pull them up the hole.

we can use panfish here. lil perch, gills, crappie,........ catch all kinds of predators on them. dont have to bother with runt bass, if you use them 3" or bigger. suckers and chubs smell far stronger and have a better sent trail though. 10-12" suckers work great but they are 150+ each here! i cant justify that price when pans are free. lol
real fishermen don't ask "where you catch those"

Walleye : medium sized shiners or suckers

Theres also fat heads, red tailed chub, creek chub (actually a really good pike bait), golden shiners, but I catch most of my fish on suckers. Walleye, pike, bass, you name it. Just pick the size you want for the species.

I've heard people use shrimp, so I don't see squid being too far off.

I've heard of guys using shrimp and canned sardines but I've never tried either so I can't say how they work.
