How far north do we have to go for 3-4 inches of ice?

last week, friday and saturday, i did some ice fishing in mid-central wisconsin. Most of the larger lakes got broken up from the warm weather, but they had a few smaller lakes with good 3-4". It was about 3 1/2 hours north of chicago
