Houghton Lake
« on: Dec 05, 2022, 06:54 PM »
Looking to come up to Houghton Lake again. In past i get there usually the third or last week in January. This year I'm thinking of first week or second week of January.
What's your thoughts on that time of year at Houghton. Think it will be fishable ice the first week?

Last 4 years my first ice trip is to Houghton on Christmas day. Just checked da forecast , hoping for an early run , but now I'ts looking like I'll be watching Santa do his drive by.
For a local report, contact Lymons bait , they're on da South shore

Any tips on which way to go, what depths to look for walking out from DNR ramp behind rite aid? I'll catch anything but mostly looking to hook some pike.
May also walk out of trestle park so any tips there.  Keep in mind I'm hoofing it and not up for long walks. Thanks.

Never fished Trestle. I pull into town pretty early & a state trooper gave us a warning about parking there before dawn (there's signs posted). Being a spear guy, my ideal setup is a weed line in 8 fow off da South launch, which is getting harder to find due to the weed control being applied da last few seasons. Never been there in January, once da machines hit da ice , that place is a circus I want no part of.

My son has to work tomorrow & this day trip I'm not gonna miss.
Planning on hitting da hardwater at dawn & looking for a slushie to split da gas or meet up at da bait shop to make sure i get out dry & upright.
Bring your own shanty & gear & I'll even cut a couple spear holes for ya.
