Ice fishing Caroga Lake
« on: Jan 17, 2008, 06:27 PM »
Hello was wondering if anyone has had any luck on either east or west Caroga this year.  What depths and what kind of bait are you using foe splake.  Thinking of heading out towards Vroomans in a week or 2, thanks Don
Stop complaining do something about it.

bigbear,
I fished West 2 weeks ago, we caught one splake.  We fished out behind Shermans, the fish was caught in about 15 fow.  We did not get out on the ice until about 10:00 am, so this could have had something to do with the lack of fish....or maybe because I have never ice fished before that day.  I fished East last week, caught one pickerel and a perch.  I was chasing flags most of the day.....again....rooki e here.  We used medium shiners on both lakes, and the depth in East was no more than 15'.
Hope this helps....

You can park at Vroomans inn and walk onto the ice behind there.

or you can park at Shermans amusement and walk out onto the ice from there.

Park in the leftside Parking lot at Vroomans Hotel, they let you, walk straight out on the snomobile trail about 500',stay to the right because the creek comes in to the left,or park by Shermans amusement park along the east shore road, fish anywhere's,they will either bite or not?they were biting good lastmonth.

Bigbear,

I was wondering if you has a chance to get to your fishing hole.  Would you please advise if you hit fertile fishing grounds.  Did you have any luck harvesting the splake, if so please let me know what size and if you enjoyed the meal.  I am eagerly awaiting your response.

If you check the NYS Lake contour maps they tell you what kind of fish live in the lake. The lakes are catgorized by counties. Also tell you the general depths and any launch areas.......

PS- West Caroga has the trout..........

The Fish&Game club stocked browns for a few years. When the rainbows had some disease 4 years ago, Dec would only allow Browns to be stocked. So there's a few in there, but there few and far between.

I did not mean to imply that you did not know the difference. I am not an expert on the lakes or have I ever claimed to be. It was meant more as a rhetorical question ;)
I had never seen one nor heard of them on the Carogas. Thanks again for everyones clarification ;)

Nice people on both sides, Get Breakfast all day from Donna @ the red store!  She just the bought the place 18 months ago. She let us park our vehicles in her side lot over night so we were off the street a few weeks ago.

you could use the excuse as a hands on demonstration of how to rig the bait. Then you can have someone else run the store while you're gone..........
