Herring, etc for Pike
« on: Aug 03, 2021, 03:47 PM »
If you are using herring, or some other smelly fish when dead baiting for Pike, do you just cut it up in chunks and use the chunks?

Some good video at the 1:47 mark horizontal vs vertical..I also read/seen where anglers cut slits in the bait to get the scent to disperse better

I use whole frozen 6-8 inch sardines bought from the supermarket ( thawed before putting on the hook ) with pretty good success. Just hook through the back of the head and lay it on the bottom. Has worked in several lakes that I fish but I am not saying that it has outperformed live minnows.

Have been using 6-8 inch frozen mackerels on my tip ups for a number of years, ever since live baitfish became illegal here. Have caught some good pike on them in both open water (when it was legal), and on ice as well. The ice musky in my avatar as well. I use them whole on hand tied quick strike rigs.

Yep I'm always using them whole. Never cut up chunks.
And when I buy herring they come in different sizes and the packs are color coded.
So I just buy the appropriate size that I want to use.
Blue label, green label, etc.
My homemade quick strikes are the way to go to rig them!
