I guess I will have to kick this one off.

Well I am 17 years old and I live in Anchorage. I may be young but I like to go fish long and hard. Right now ive been targeting burbot and lake trout. I do a lot of fishing on the kenai peninsula but am now starting to explore up north a little more. Apart from hunting and fishing my life revolves around wrestling  ( all three styles ). I am currently ranked 2nd in the state at 130lb weight class. Anyways I hope to beat my personal best of a 24lb9oz lake trout this year during the tournement.

If you guys have any questions to ask me i will be mre than happy to awnser them.

Oh yeah if you have any tips on fishing im all ears.

Welcome FrankAK, glad to see your not shy. Great job on the Laker, where did you catch him/her? I caught a 28lb laker last year and hope to do that good again this year. Although we will not probably take that category thanks to those hardwater nuts in BC. They have the length  down there and that's what wins the tourney, while we have the girth which is what matters for most of us.

Welcome aboard and have fun, you will find a wealth of knowlege here in our area as well as IS itself.

I cought it down on the kenai peninsula. Im pretty sure it was a male. Anyways Im going to be heading up north for byers or long lake. Going to see if I can pull a few bots up and maybee a char or laker.

I cant decide on which lake to go so ill let the ice shantiers chime in.

My name is Marc,  I've lived in Alaska for 8 years now.  Just returned from a tour of duty in Korea for a year.  Now that I'm back, and retired from the Air Force, I try to get out and fish as much as I can before I find a job next year.  I'm usually found out on Sand lake during the weekdays, so if you see me say Hi.

My Name is Tim. I moved up here from Albuquerque, New Mexico a little over a year ago. I go to school at UAA. Getting a degree in Air Traffic Control. I did tons of fishing back home for Bass. Once i moved up here I had a hard time switching over to trout and salmon.  I did a little ice fishing last winter but really hit it hard this winter.  I spent my whole summer fishing on the keni and around south central for kings and slivers. My first king was a 55lb monster. So as a bass fisherman it was the biggest fish I have ever caught. Once again switching from bass to trout and salmon is hard and I'm glad theres sites like this for me to ask all my dumb questions.   :)

My name is Zack, Im 18 and have lived and fished Alaska all my life.  I just really got into ice fishing this past year, but have fished extensivly in the summer, mostly for salmon and trout with my newest focus being on fly fishing.  The only lake I've icefished hard is big lake for char(when i was 4 i caught a 7Lb 27incher).  Otherwise i'm just getting started on trying to catch some pike, burbot, and big rainbows through the ice.  I'm usually out fishing a least 3 days a week and have a truck, snowmachine, auger, and all the other necessary ice fishing gear.

Welcome rgfish, FrozenMarc, gokorn1 and zack64 glad to see our numbers growing on the Alaska Forum. I don't think any one ice fishing in this state will be disappointed for long if they are not catching fish. It happens to everyone and after awhile things will turn around.

You will find tons of info and encouragement when you have  ??? or   about anything on here.

Glad to have you and most of all have fun on here and in the outdoors.

Welcome nptrash, I'm glad your enthusiastic about the site. Scott AKA Iceshanty has worked very hard to make this site what it is today but it wouldn't quite be the same if it wasn't for all the great folks on here including you who usually leave it all hanging out there, in a clean way that is.

TEAM AK!

My name is Jake, and I have been in AK for a couple of years now.  I am working as an archaeologist in Eagle River, doing alot of work for the AK National Guard, and flying around going on crazy adventures to various villages.  I grew up in MN, and did limited Ice fishing then, but I am down like a clown for it now!  I love being out on the lakes in the darkness with the wind and the cold!  Too bad my wife doesn't share the same feeling (unless she is catching fish)! ::) I fish mainly around Anchor-town, but have a couple of big trips planned out soon, Lake Louise over Christmas being the first one!  I can't wait! ;D

Anyways, this site rocks, as many have already said, and I will use my Nostradamus-like powers to predict that Team AK will take the IS tourney this year!

Cheers!

Jake

long time Alaskan - just getting some free time to catch up on past fishing - never really got into ice fishing growing up (parents didn't do it so you just don't know what you're missing), but the lakes around fairbanks and their nice tasty fish are placating my fishing urges till summer. As with any other kind of fishing once you get into it - you're hooked, so it looks like I'll be a regular winter fisherman once I manage to get outfitted! Found a cheap deal on a hand auger last spring, but it's hard to drill a half dozen holes for the family that way! Any cheap gas augers out there? Maybe one that needs work - let me know!

I've found a few decent rainbows in Birch and Quartz - but would like to figure out the char situation - mmmmm....char! Those big lake trout and pike that are around here look like a blast as well, but again...got to learn how to fish them!

Ice fishing is a great way to get my young kids out fishing too, when it's not too cold. They really like fishing in the summer too, but salmon are too big for them and most of the lakes are tough to fish without a boat - docks and campgrounds get pretty crowded too. I would really like to build a shanty for next year...that way the weather doesn't make them retreat to the truck.

cool site, like the info...doing lots of searches to try and dig up char, lake trout, and pike secrets - of course good places to go and info on techniques (best depths - how to read the lake, etc) are golden to find too!

Guess that's enough!

Oh yeah if you have any tips on fishing im all ears.

I wrestle as well but only with the wife, in a nice way ;)2 And that involves more than 3 styles ;D

Right on. Welcome aboard all you new and old Alaska members. Hope to see some postings of your beautiful artic char in the "Anything category" in tourney. Us in BC are looking forward to some competition from you guys in burbot and rainbow category. We have seen some old pics of Fishyman Jakes burbot and they are decent. Hope you guys can take up the slack in his abscence or marraige or whatever it is.  Where is that Barleydog, he fished with him in the past. Good luck to you all and have fun. Cheers

Hello!

I just joined.  I moved to the Anchorage area about two years ago.  Before that I lived in South Dakota.  I did a lot of fishing for Rainbows there, but not much else.  I've been fishing Sand Lake since I got here and found this site while trying to get some more information on pike techniques.

I'm the one on the right (the human, not the dog)  ;)

TEAM ALASKA!!  I'm a true Alaska newby.  I moved up from Iowa this last June!  Working as a park ranger for the Corps of Engineers at the Flood Control Project in North Pole.  Before coming here, I'd lived in Iowa all my life and developed two passions: waterfowl hunting, and ice fishing.  Loved fishing the Iowa lakes for crappie, walleye, bluegill, pike, perch and others.  Tried to make a trip to South Dakota each year also.
Completely new to most Alaska fish species other than pike.  Still a nonresident until next June, so have been trying to hold back until the '07 licenses come out.  Can't wait to take to the ice and learn some methods for taking Alaska fish!

Well team alaska...
I'm from Minnesota and vacation on the Penninsula about every year for the last 20 years...friends - six brother and sisters of a long-time family with whom my family have been friends for over 50 years have all lived in AK for quite some time.

Wasilla, Talkeetna, Soldnota, Kenai and of course Anchroid.  I have been looking around Talkeetna and North Kenai for land and am kind of torn between the two.  Talkeetna is a charming village and thewifey likes it.  My best friend is in Soldotna with his family.  But the war department did not care so much for Pennisula..she thinks its too touristy...which I guess is true...but its hard to not like them kings on the Kenai!!!

I've fished Deep Creek with much success.  Clammed on the Glutch.  For the first time, I brought the whole fam damily up with me...my son caught a dandy of a king on his VERY FIRST CAST up on the Sulsitna River....lucky little bassturd!  just shy of being a 40 lb'er.

So can you folks be ok with a part-timer on your TEAM???

Also - any feedback for preferences on land acquisition much appreciated...

I love fishing and came home with over 200 lbs of salmon...in addition to fishing up at Talkeetna, (btw - the ICE AX brew was kick-ass!!!...or was it kicked my a$$...LOL), we chartered the Natuk out of Seward for an overnighter/ 2-day outing.  Capt. Wayne may be a  crabass of an ol sealegged sailor, but the son-of-a b***h sure can fish!!!

would  love to hear from some of you 'Kans!!!

Guess I'm next!

Moved up in 04; been fishing ever since. AKDan and a guy named John Lake dragged me a couple places up here and down Kenai way.  Haven't got a King yet, and still looking for that first Bubot, but other than that I have done OK in a few years.

Plan on retiring up here in about 3 years, and just fish all the time!

I happen to think the flag is a good idea! Brad is the man!

Spend a few weekends up here fishing, however been a little distracted with Hockey (something new I started this winter.) I fish mostly Birch and Quartz. Would love to get to Lake george before the end of the year for Pike. I look forward to getting to know everyone again.

I am a true rookie in that I have never played any sort of organized or pick up game of hockey. I still get called for penalties and have to ask what I did. ??? I did take some skating lessons 7 years ago with my son when he tried playing. We are in first place with the end of the season next week. We finished last year in last. With the end of the season I hope this warm weather sticks around a while and I get out for some serius Ice Fishing. Not that the cold snaps have kept me indoors. Have a great day all

Hello to all.   My name is Shane and i moved to alaska from minnesota in 1992.  I live in Eagle River, and I love it here.   Although i grew up ice fishing for walleyes and big pike........(often enough to flunk out of college my first go around). ;).........I never got into icefishing up here in alaska until this year, and i can't believe that i waited this long.   It's been a blast this winter, and i'm very excited to be part of this forum.   I ran into a nice guy out on big lake that was fishing for burbot, and he told me about this website.   I didn't get a name, but am very thankful.   There seems to be some very knowledgeable fisherman in this group, and you can bet that i'll be sucking up any useful piece of information that i come across, as well as, contributing the occasional fishing report.

Tight Lines..........Shane

Tinman here, just checking in. I've been fishing Alaska waters for the past 17 years, saltwater, freshwater, and hard water. One of these days I might get some of it figured out.

I heard my fishin buddy Rdrash posted some pics from a little earlier in the year, expect more to follow. Seems he forgot to post any of my "bonafieds" (guess he's just jealous I'm leading our little char race)

We're off to Nancy lake again in the morning, it's a fun little derby that runs through the 28th of Feb. You guys should come out and give a go. You can tape the Super Bowl, besides, isn't a screaming drag washer and tight line more fun?

Hey hard water people. I'm in the Air Force and got stationed up here last June.  I really like ice fishing. Been at it for about three years now.  Made my start on the Utah lakes. Been hovering on your posts and finally decided to to chime in. Really love the outdoors.  Been trying out a lot of the Alaskan lakes this winter.  Got lots of questions for you guys. I rarely keep any - I should take more pics cause the wife doesn't always believe me.

Looking forward to your posts.

My name is Patrick and I live in Anchorage, spend almost every weekend ice fishing. Mostly local lakes like sand lake, cambpell point and mirror lake. Also fish the kepler bradley lakes, Matanuska lake and big lake. I finally got a power auger for this year and can't wait to try it out. No more drilling 3-4 holes 3-4 feet deep with a hand auger for me. My best fish ice fishing is a 28" and seven pound char from one of the stocked lakes. It was an old battle scarred fish that I just couldn't kill. It is still swimming around and maybe I will catch it bigger this year. I will be ready with my camera this year. Good luck to all!

Hello,
My name is Tony and I live in Chugiak. I am stationed at Ft Rich. I've been here since June 05 with a recent trip to the sandbox causing me to miss last winter. The year before I was introduced to ice fishing by a friend at work and became addicted. I enjoy trips to Lake Louise when I have the time. My best fish to date is a 37" laker caught in the winter of 2005. I took my 5 year old to Mirror lake on turkey day and today and had a blast catching land-locked salmon and an occasional 12-13" rainbow. Right now there is 5-6" of ice. I look forward to meeting some of you guys on the ice.

Hi Brad -

Did you have that fish aged?  I would bet it was over 20 years of age.  What lure did you catch it on?  That's a tremendous Lake trout, congratulations.

-Tim

Welcome Frank AK, glad to see your not shy.

Welcome aboard and have fun, you will find a wealth of knowledge here in our area as well as IS itself.

Brad

hello fellow ice fishermen, and women! my name is Steve. I recently moved here from Idaho where I love to fish. Ice fishing is great, the people are great most of the time, and it fills the time till the rivers and lakes open. I've ice fished for a long time, but I'm new to alaska and I'm trying to figure it out up here in this great state. Got a new auger and ice house for alaska and my vexlar is on it's way up, with my underwater camera. haven't got a snowmachine yet, but I'm working on it so as soon as the ice permits, I'll be out trying to catch something. This site is great, with a lot of valuable info As soon as I get out, I'll try to get a report.

My name is Bob I'm 37 and lived in Alaska for 34 years. I've been an avid fisherman for most of them (in the summer).  last year showed some intrest in ice fishing. The wife playing the part of Santa went out and purchased an Eskimo Grand Caravan along with the hitch to tow behind my four wheeler. I went out shortly after and bought a gas powered auger, (father in law said I'd use a hand auger one time and throw it away GO WITH GAS) a few fishing poles, lures and very important the little buddy heater. So as I said I'm a sumer guy I know a lot about that kind of fishing not so much about the hard water. So I will be searching for all the info I can to make my fishing experience more easier and more productive.

I'm in a subspeciality of medical imaging...been here 26 years now. Heading out in a few minutes for Big Beaver lake....Caught a 22 inch rainbow and a bunch of hi teens there last Saturday. Daughter lost "moby trout" there....I cut 10 inch holes....he filled it up before spitting the jig!!!!!!

After the 1st, I'll be concentrating on northerns and bot....maybe we can catch up down the trail....

Hello to All. Moved to Alaska in the late 70's. Love fishing of any kind. Exposed my son to fishing when he was 3 or 4 years old, now I am following him. He told me of this forum and has been really jazzed about ice fishing, so here I am. I have done a little ice fishing, but he is ahead of me on this one.  (Not for long) Did I mention competition? ;D Look forward to spending some time w/him, and talking w/members of the forum. Also now that I qualify as a old guy, I can hook him into drilling holes and hauling gear. I just clutch the old heart and try not to smile and let nature take its coarse. Good Fishing to you all. Hello everyone just got signed up here and thought I would let ya'll know a little about myself. I just moved here from South Dakota about a month ago. I love ice fishing and I am getting the feeling that this might be the first year in quite some time that I am not going to be able to go. I am hoping someone here could help me out a bit. I have no equipment or anything to go myself. I will go get poles and lures and bait if someone could tell me what all i really need to catch some fish. I don't care what I catch as long as i am on the ice somewhere catching something. I live in Anchorage now so if there are any lakes close to town or in town that i may be able to go and punch open a previous hole that would be great. Any help for a new guy would be helpful, Thank you and its great to be a member.

P.S.  IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN PHEASANT HUNTING IN SOUTH DAKOTA LET ME KNOW, I WILL GET YOU ON THE BIRDS, OPENING DAY IS THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER, I CANT PROVIDE TRANSPORT OR LODGING BUT I CAN PUT YOU ON THE BIRDS AND RECOMMEND A GOOD LODGE IF THAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE INTERESTED IN.

HEY GUYS, my name is Chris...uuummmm basically I love to FISH, LIVE to FISH, and Fish every chance I get.   I've lived here in Alaska for a little over 3 years now due to voluntarily being transfered by the AirForce and plan to stay for a while after I get out.  Before that I was stationed in Washington for a while slaying all the salmon/trout/and steelhead they had to offer.  I picked up ice fishing as soon as I got here and absolutely enjoyed it, so of course I went out and bought a vex fl-18/marcum camera and a nice shelter to improve my odds. So far I've caught a lot of trout, dollies, char, landlocked salmon, and one 28inch burbot through the ice.  The biggest fish through the ice so far is a 26in char out of a local anchorage lake, but I'd really like to get into some lake trout and burbot. By the way this site is awesome!!!

Hello everyone, I am new to the site and I wanted to drop in and introduce myself.  My name is Jake and I am a lifelong Alaskan and have been an avid angler as far back as I can remember.  I am 30 years old and work for a bank in Anchorage in the loan dept.  I look forward to talking to you all about lakes, tackle, methods, and anything else about ice fishing.  I have gone on about 15 trips this year to a variety of places and have done OK, not the best year for me though.  However, its not over and the big trips are yet to come.  I have read about the last four months of posts and some from the last couple of years, and you folks are a stand up group of people.  I look forward to talking to you more.  Have a great day!

LOL, I'm sure you could!  I am not a loan officer yet, I do all of the work and the loan officers get the credit.  When you get a loan and sign the documents, I made all of those documents.

Thanks for the welcome, I love this website, everyone is really great and helpful to one another.  The world would hum along to a different tune if everyone were that way.

My goal this winter is to pull a huge laker through the ice. Any suggestions? I have some good lakes for pike and bows if you'd care to trade secret holes.

I love to fish when ever I get the chance. I have even fished in Baghdad Iraq while deployed there! Alaska is God's playground and l love to take advantage of all it has to offer. I had a great year of fishing and am finishing my year out on ice fishing before heading to Montana in April. I hope to share so tips and stories on here about ice fishing since I am fairly new to it up here. I plan on doing most of my fishing in the valley since I live in Wasilla. Hello all.  This is a great site.  I will be making my first trip to AK in about a week.  Headed to the Fairbanks area from PA.  Friends I am staying with, have set up an ice fishing trip.  So I need to bring my gear.  I will look for a better place to post this but I believe we are after greyling.  Any reccomendations on which gear to bring would be great. I already have the vex packed, I am looking for ideas on rods, line weight and other species typically caught around Fairbanks.  Thanks.

I'm not too aware of grayling through the ice, heard of it, but no idea where or what it's like. On what else is available there is quite a bit to relay - can you give us an idea where they plan to take you? Maybe start a new post with "visiting fairbanks" type title to be sure the interior people see your questions and respond. You'll have a good time - be sure to visit the 'ice park' opening this weekend or sometime soon, it's something to see.

Done alot of ice fishing in my younger days, (BW and BC, before wife and before children) but time is limited so best way to get fishing in is if i'm makin' money, then the wife digs it!!
Looking forward to it!

Welcome AKICE!  I'll start you off with some simple lingo, and other folks can go from there!

A spud is not a potatoe nor a short basketball player.  It's a metal bar with a chisel connected to the bottom in which you use to cut through the ice, and then toss to the bottom of the lake. :-[

Welcome again! ;)

Hello,

The name's Rich and I moved up to Alaska back in September with my wife, Paula.  We're both from Wyoming and were ready for an adventure after finishing up with college... so we packed our bags and headed north.  As an avid fisherman, hunter, hiker and general outdoor enthusiast, I've always wanted to try hacking it in Alaska... it's seems like the only state that might be better than Wyoming.  And the wind blows a lot less.  ;)  I've hit up the iceshanty forum from time to time, mostly to get an idea of what to expect for ice conditions and what fish are in what lake.  It seams like a great bunch people, so I figured I ought to step up and join the crowd (even if it is nearing the end of the hardwater season).

Anyhow, we started hitting the ice back in January (we waited until 2008 to avoid buying the nonresident license twice).  I grew up icefishing for trout (rainbows, cuts, lakers and brookies) as well as some perch and walleye, so I was excited to try for some new species through the ice... namely arctic char and pike.  I got a nice char our first trip out (Big Lake), managed to land several pike (Big Lake), and picked up some trout/salmon/char along the way... so thus far I've been very happy with our first season on the Alaskan ice.  ;D

I've been overseas in the Air Force for about 13 years and am finally coming back to the U.S. for my first stateside assignment. I've lived in Korea (3yrs), Japan (3yrs), Guam (4yrs), and Italy (2yrs). I'll be at Elmendorf in October this year and can't wait to get geared up for some icefishing. All of my ice fishing experiance is fishing for panfish, walleye, and pike down in the L48, but I'm looking forward to some new things. Hey Everyone,

So I was driving down Cushman street this week and I saw a truck with several iceshanty bumper stickers so here I am.  I've lived in Fairbanks for a couple years and did a little ice fishing last year. I'm excited at the site of fresh snow and ice forming on the creeks & sloughs. This year my goal is to catch my first ever pike and lake trout. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Arcticgrayling

Welcome aboard Grayling, we are glad to have you here, when the water is hard look for a red dodge truck, stop over and shoot the breeze although I must warn you that the first liar doesn't stand a chance at my fire.

Welcome ArcticGrayling if you read through some of the older posts you'll see some on lake trout. I'm thinking that with all the high water we had earlier this summer some of the ponds between South Cushman and the Airport might hold a few new pike this winter. Maybe worth a look. I can usually be found on Birch Lake fishing in F-75.

Hello,
New to the iceshanty.com. Not so new to ice fishing. Lived in Fairbanks my entire life of 26 years. I recognize a few faces on here. I never heard of you guys before and the other day I was walking through the Fred Meyers parking lot and seen a truck with a couple iceshanty.com stickers and thought "what the heck is that?'' and here I am. To the people that know me, my "old man" works at the U. Well here's my introduction. Thanks, Jess

What do you mean ripe, I'll have you know that the union suit is new this time of year and doesn't start getting ripe until March or April. Welcome aboard Jess, I'm thinking I see the old man on a daily basis.

Hello all!

I've been itching to get on the ice and just happened across this site the other day.  I moved up to Fairbanks this May from South Dakota.  Did a little fishing this Summer whenever I had some time off work, but that didn't turn out to be much.  Looks like things are going to be slow this winter, so I'm planning to get geared up and out on the ice soon.  The move was a bummer since I had to leave my shack, sled, and auger behind.  So if anybody's looking to go out soon, give me a shout.  I'd also appreciate any pointers.  I'm used to fishing walleye, perch, and pike, so the whole trout, salmon, and char situation is quite a change.  But, I'm looking forward to seeing something new come out of the ice when my flag goes up.

What's up jiggers?  Just kidding!  I fish with my family in the Valley every chance we get and get some pretty nice Rainbows and Dollys.  When we have the time, we love fishing for big Lakers on Lake Louise.

I think we will have a blast this year and surely make a strong showing in the annual tourney so don't for get to sign up from the beginning of December to the end of the month or you will not be allowed to enter any fish. You will see the sign up in the General chit chat area. I will post on here when it opens and when it closes when we get closer. Any FNG's aka new guys have any questions just ask and wait for a reply if your unsure about anything.

Well tight lines and lets have fun and keep the mods off our backs on here.

PS will post some info on maybe going fishing this weekend locally and to Birch or Quartz on Tuesday for sure because of Veterans day many of us have off.

Hello Guys!

I am just your typical 12 month out of the year Alaska fisherman. Hard, soft, flowing, salty, doesn't matter to me I am there. Haven't been on the ice yet this year but hopefully this weekend I will have a little time to get out there.

I live in Palmer so I do most of my ice fishing close by. Hoping to get up to Lake Louise or Long Lake for some lakers this year. I think this is my 4th year ice fishing so looking to expand my horizons.

Maybe see some of you guys out there!!

Hello All,
Just found this site the other day, and thought I might join in.  I live in Big Lake, been in AK 17 years, courtesy of the USAF, retired from AF in '98 and never left.  Was born and raised in Minnesota, and have been punching holes in the ice since I was a kid.  I'm a hard core pike fisherman in the winter, prefering to spear them from the darkhouse.  Looking forward to the forum, maybe see ya on the ice sometime.

Hi everybody.  I'm new to the site but not to ice fishing.  I've lived here in Alaska for over three years now and the ice fishing gets better every year.  I came from Ohio.  I use to fish hard water lakes for bass, perch, catfish and panfish.  There is a bit of a learning curve for trout but I learn something new about every time I go out.  You can find me from the lakes at Eielson to Delta.

black (blak) adj. totally withoutlight; in complete darkness; evil; wicked; harmful; disgraceful;full of sorrow or suffering;sad; dismal; gloomy; disastrous.
ice (is)n.the glassy, brittle, crystalline form of water made solid by cold; coldness in manner or attitude
syn.di.cate (sin'de kat)n. a group or council of syndics; an informal association of criminals controlling a network or vice, gambling, etc.

the black ice syndicate: We are aggressive ice fishing beer drinkers. You probably won't like us. Their are approximately twelve of us in the group. We all come from diffrent backgrounds. With one common goal catch bigger fish. Some of us are hunting and fishing guides. The rest of us were to d**n smart to throw our summers away like that. Some of us don't take jobs in the winter so as not to interfere with the passion of fishing the hard water.  We are here looking for any person, or group that might be up for the challenge that we offer. Plain and simple how much fun can you have on the ice? So send in those pics show us what you got. If you think you know who and where we are, come bye say hi and have a beer with us not tasteless yellow beer, real beer. Perhaps you think were arrogant? perhaps your mouthing your words as you read this. Come bye say hi and who knows maybe just maybe you will like us.

Barley - it's an old 70's vintage, but the furnace works!  I have had it a couple winters now and had to replace some 'wet cardboard box' that used to be wood to keep the propane tank and batteries from spilling down the highway after a bad frost heave!

Title: New to ice fishing. Lake suggestions?
Post by: Zeb on Oct 28, 2009, 08:34 PM
Hello everyone, I'm a total ice fishing newbie, but I'm actually really excited about getting started.  It seems like it should be a fun winter activity.  I just got into snowmachining also, and I thought ice fishing would be a good use of my new SD Tundra.

So far, I've been buying gear and doing research.  I've got most of the necessities purchased already... Snowmachine, cargo sled, shelter, heater, auger, rods, reels, tackle, tip-ups, ice scoop, flasher, chairs, etc.

What Kenai Peninsula or Mat-Su area lakes are good for ice fishing?  I'd love to fish some remote, snowmachine-in lakes this winter.

Also, if anyone is looking for someone to go fishing with this winter, drop me a line.  I'm 31, and live in Anchorage.  My wife is in school and doesn't have much free time, so I'd love to meet some friends to accompany me fishing!

-Zeb

Welcome Zeb!

I fish Lake Louise mostly with a few trips to pike lakes in the Susitna area. Gotta love those predator fish!

What snow machine do you run?

I usually run the snow machines for a month before fishing, but who knows. I left all my gear at LL so I have to go there first. Damn the bad luck// ;) ;)

Do you need a kitchen pass?  ;D

Hello
my name is Jerome, have been ice fishing since I was a kid,but dad only took us out to local lakes around anchorage.caught only stockers, but had a heck of a time, many fond memorys of dad punching five holes with a hand auger so all us kids could fish.about two years ago we scored a old 8" gas auger and started fishing lake louise.me and buddies drilled three holes and set up with trebel hooks with shrimp.fished for about ten minutes, with no takes so I went out to scout another hole, well me and my buddies allways play jokes on each other, and it was my turn to get it. While I was gone my best friend Jake (JKW as u might know him) took a piss in my hole while it was rigged with the shrimp.a couple of minutes later there was a take on my pull and Jake grabbed it and the fight was on.I was just pulling up on my sled to see Jake with my pole bent in half with Dave cheering him on, the fish kept hitting the hole side ways for a few minutes finally he got him turned right and I screamed at Dave, GRAB IT! He screamed back at me,no he pissed in that hole.that's when I relized Jake tried to get me,I wanted to grab it for him but could not stick my hands in that yellow water.Jake ended up loosing the fish and That's how we all got the fever, seeing that king salmon sized laker not fit through the ice hole.we ended up caching and puting back a few under sized fish, but still trying to catch that one that got away.sorry for rambling on but had to share that story because I get the feeling he never told anyone how he lost the laker of his dreams

Hey everyone,

My name is Jake and I am 32 years old from Anchorage.  I have lived here for about 26 years and love fishing with or without ice. There is just something about drilling a hole in the ice and getting right over structure that you would not necessarily be able to do in the summer that is awesome.  I went out to a local lake this weekend with my girlfriend and caught a bunch of fish in the 12" to 16" range, but did see one get caught by another gentleman that was about 22".   It was great for the first outing and I am ready to get out of town and get into some real fish.  Does anyone have any good information on any lakes/rivers that are real good for burbot?

Tomorow I am going to Sportsmans to buy some gear that I sold when I came into the military and after that I should be on the lake everyday I am off.

Well I guess I better say hello too since I have been lurking around a while. Big fan of the site and some of the pictures you all have been sharing. I have been ice fishing with a buddy for the last couple years, and will continue to do so, but I'm gearing to try and get out a little more with my son, plus its kinda addicting.  ;D I work week on and week off so it allows me the opportunity and flexabilty of time and hitting the local lakes when most are working.

Looking forward to meeting you folks out on the ice, be safe,

Todd

Hello.  My name is Mark from Fairbanks.  I stumbled across this forum yesterday and find it very interesting.  I'm planning on going to Birch Lake tomorrow.  I've not been ice fishing since I was 5 years old.  That was, uhm, decades ago?  It should be interesting and fun.

I look forward to reading more.

Arrived in Alaska way back in the good ol' days. Been shoveling snow and drilling holes for 40 winters now. Ran out of pike on the Kenai Peninsula and during my most recent pike research discovered this forum as a source of enjoyment viewing all the photos of Alaskans' catches and maybe pick up a few pointers here and there. Hope to make it to the Valley a few times this winter on multi-day outings to scout around for some greener pastures to fill the freezer and deep fryer with more poor man's lobster. Prefer to throw the spear over setting the hook but the tip up bucket is always along and utilized too. No sense in missing an opportunity.  Happy Holidays~!

Hello, My name is Chris and I am an Icefishaholic. ;D
I live in Soldotna  and fish for whatever swims below the ice here on the peninsula. I found this site from some guys on the Alaska outdoor forums. I prefer lakes I can snomachine into towing my Eskimo Grandcaravan but will really fish anywhere there is safe ice.
I am a big fan of Icefishing electronics and have a Vexilar FL20 and an Aqua view Spool color underwater camera.
It has been a decent ice fishing season so far this year and it will only get better when I get off the slope again on tuesday. My biggest fish so far this year has been a 20" rainbow but now that I hear we have a little more snow This should not be hard to beat.
I am also a pike spearer but due to the netting program by ADF&G I dont always set up the spear shanty anymore.
Hard to believe all these guys on here who live in places with no ice until January. On the Peninsula I have icefished as early as October but most years not until some time until late November early December.
Good luck fishing!

Hello All, I am new to this sight. I have been watching the sight over the past year and decided to check it out on the inside. I live in the valley, Palmer-wasilla and a transplant from Utah. I used to Ice fish Utah when I lived there but sold everything when I moved up here. I was told there was no Ice fishing to be had because of the long nights. Now I know that was BS. Well a few thousand dollars later, I am back in business. I am blessed to be able to fish on a number of lakes within in 5-10 minutes of the house. Its pretty sad when what I thought August was the best time of the year to fish Ak and this last August I never touched a rod because of the crowds. I am a former Fly fishing guide who loves to fish. When I got married, I told my wife "don't every make me choose between fishing and you, cuz you may not like the answer". I am still happily married and she has never asked the question.  My goal this year is to catch a burbot, and do some pike fishing somewhere on the other side of the Susitna. I love to read the posts and Updates. Thanks Again.

Still do many trips every year with my friend "Akhardwater". He told me about this site, for info on areas and reports from many on the lakes we fish together. Hope to see you guys on the ice.

I am in the Air Force and love it up here in Alaska.  I fish all summer, hunt in the fall then fish again in the winter.  I have been out this winter quite a few times, and have done fairly well catching Pike.  I caught my first burbot on Big Lake about a week ago.  I do a lot of fishing with another member on here, TnT.  Any questions just ask.   ;)

Hello all,
As I guess I'm the newest new guy, how's the ice treating everyone?  Just joined the forum after stopping in for a few months researching gas augers.  Great forum and a great place to talk to folks who share the same "ice fishin' fever" I suffer from currently.  Anyhow, I've been in Alaska about 9 years or so and just recently got back into ice fishing.   I've picked up an Eskimo Quickfish 3, Jet Sled, Mr. Buddy Heater (the smaller variety) & a StrikeMaster LazerMag 10".  Haven't caught anything of any real size yet, but the Ramen cooked on the sterno stove this last trip was phenomenal.  Making the drive to Big Lake this weekend to try my luck.  I'll let you know how that pans out.  Great to be apart of the AK Team.

Hello All,

I just moved to Fairbanks, AK this summer because I couldn't get enough ice fishing in Lake Champlain, Vermont (3-4 months is not enough!!)

I almost cried when I heard there's no live bait up here but good pike fishermen know the big boys like wounded or dead bait anyways. I too am a bit sad, but then again grew up spoiled, as on Lake Champlain we were allowed 15 tip ups per person. I am going to have to combine my pike fishing passion with my panfishing skill and that with a little local help will morph into the AK style that pulls lakers, salmon, char, and burbot!!

I am completely psyched as in Vermont our spearing season was only about a month and it was after the ice went out (tripping through the swamp and streams in 34 degree water with lanterns finding new holes in the waders!!) My cozen and I have stared down our perch holes dozens of times after a decent pike has swam into the perch and taken that lucky Bibbet and said "No why can't we spear through the ice?"

So now that I'm pretty sure I've shot the last few remaining mallards in the area (after spending hours the night before cutting through 4" of ice to make open water to duck hunt in on Saturday the one I did get made me walk all the way around the pond and shoot it then walk across the ice to retrieve it)

I am going to put away the axe and decoys and gas up the auger.

This years goals:

1) Dark house spearing
2) Catch 1st trout, salmon, char, etc. through the ice
3) Find all the local hotspots
4) Start finding and mapping the remote hotspots

and as always there's that before 40 goal
5) Pull a 20lb Pike

If any locals read this please please please tell me that I have been miss informed and that somebody local carries Jiffy products. Am I going to be the only one up here with a yellow auger?

Oh and I guess goal 6) Come up with a new handle as the VT Icefisher has flown Nord2AK !!!

Fish On boys and girls!!!!!!

I thought going from 4 lines to 2 was rough, but 15?  Not going to lie, I'd have every one of 'em out.  The bait situation is pretty depressing.  How are you supposed to make the new guy eat live minnows when the bite's slow?  Anyway, I know Sportsman's carried Jiffy's since that's where I bought mine.  Hopefully for you they're just late getting them in (like everything else).  All I've seen are Eskimo's, and as a previous owner, I wouldn't wish one on anybody.  As for the remote trips, just got the sled back together and was already thinking the same.  The action is limited around Fairbanks, so I plan on spreading my wings a little this year.  If you're looking to get out, I think a couple of us are going to try Quartz in the next couple days.  Might want to bring those waders and axe though.

Name is Matt, lived in AK for 3 1/2 years now.  Originally a Yooper, but didn't complain a bit when the Air Force sent me here (I did complain the other 13 years and 6 assignments that I wasn't sent here though!).  At any rate, this year is a building year with the kids.  Gotta get the little buggers on some fish to really lock in the habit that has driven me to near madness at times!  If anyone in the Eagle River area fishes with kids (mine are 2 and 4), would love to set up a kids fishing date!  I have all my own gear, just always good to have company for the kids so if the fishing is bad, they still have a good time playing with new people (I'm sure they get sick of me after a while!).

Hope to gain some insight and perhaps share my experiences with the rest of you.

Flags up, fish on!

I live in the Valley, but I think we could probably set something up.  My 4 year old has been spearing w/ me since he was 2.  My 2 year old has gone out a few times since he was ~7 months old, but this year will be his first year of all day trips.  Nothing like hearing them giggle when they see that first fish come through the ice!

Welcome and Hello Mattsgirl,

I am new here as well, its only been a couple days since joining and I have posted elsewhere, but you just brought this thread up that I had not yet seen for us rookies to introduce ourselves.  So some here may have already read my hard water rookie post that I did somewhat introducting myself, as well as seeking some local tips.  I must say that it has been a warm welcome so far.  I have written a few PM's to a couple folks on here and have had very pleasant responses with some great info and even an invite or two to get out fishing together, so thank you very much to those folks already.

A bit more about my fishing addiction would be that I have lived in Alaska for a couple years now and that it was actually my wife that brought me up here.  We met at college and it was her goal to eventually get back here to the valley where she grew up, so needless to say I was an easy sale.  ;D

Not always, but most of the time I am fishing with my two oldest boys who are 6 and 4 and they are getting the bug pretty bad as well.  Oh and mattsgirl, my wife does get out with us on occasion as well, but this year we have a 6 month old boy that makes it a bit tougher (yes that is three boys, so she is way out numbered, but I will have no problem finding fishing buddies)  We have a quickfish 6 shelter that we take most of the time and I just did get my early Christmas present of an ice fishing flasher, so hopefully that will improve my success ratio.

I am completely hooked on the hard water fishing and really look forward to learning more and getting into things like spear fishing for the pike and other fishing techniques and locations.

Live in Fairbanks.  I am an avid ice fisherman.  Grew up on a lake in Minnesota and learned to ice fish when I was young.  The passion for it has only been recently enhanced by moving up here to the great state of Alaska.  Have fished many of the area lakes including Quartz, Birch, Harding, Summit, Paxson, Lake Louise, Tangle Lakes and many others.  Absolutely enjoy getting out on the ice.  If I catch something, then it is even more enjoyable.  Anyone interested in putting together an outing, let me know as I am up for it.

Morning all,

I am relatively new to the area. Born and raised in Maine where my life could be measured with fishing seasons and duck seasons. Joined the military 10 years ago and finally ended up here in 2008. Now a civilian and at UAF full time. We are planning on spending the rest of our days here in the interior (with the occasional trip down south to laugh at the rest of the world). Finally got back out on the hard water this past March after a 6 year hiatus (fished my butt of in Utah for 4 years but not much ice fishing in Va). Bought the StrikeMaster auger,  a frabil two man ice shanty and dug out my rods from Utah. Only fished Bathing Beauty and Quartz (once) last year with abosolutely no success all year but a day out on the ice fishing beats just about any other day, even with no fish. This year I have found a lot of other places to fish and have high hopes. But if it's another skunker season, it still beats watching TV  ;)

Interested in meeting some of you who live up here, and maybe hitting the ice (or soft water this summer).

Hey all!

I have lived in Alaska pretty much since 1971 when I was five years old with a few years out of state for school and one stint in Washington State.  Used to be an avid fisherman until I decided to get married.  Arghhh....  well the kids are worth it even if it does cut into my fishing time.

Getting back into ice fishing now.  I used to keep a fairly detailed non commercial website of all my fishing but haven't done enough to post much lately.  Hoping to get back into the thick of things here!

Good info here!

I live in Wasilla and came to Alaska in 1986.  I have done my best to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities, especially hiking and hunting.  It is just over the last few years that I have really spent much time ice fishing, but really have the bug now.  I've posted quite a bit on another forum and registered with iceshanty last year but only lurked.  I even had to change my password to post this since I had no idea what the old one was.  Just got back from a couple days up at Lake Louise.  It was real cold, but we managed to get out a couple days and I caught my first lake trout of any decent size...    est. 10 - 12 pounds.  Too much fun.  Nothing better than that first sight of a good "fish on" just below the ice.

New to the board. I have been in Alaska since mid October. I haven't ice fished since I was a young kid. I have been out twice this winter, once to Birch and the second time to Chena Lake. I have only caught one fish that was about 7" long. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Probably going out to Chena again this morning. Wish me luck! I will be deploying in about four weeks so I have to catch some fish soon.

First of all. What a great site. Born and raised Alaskan. Been ice fishing on and off for the last 20 years give or take. Have lived here in Sterling for the past ten years. Work month on month off for the State of Alaska. Fish "The River" from shore and skiff every day I'm not at work in the warmer months. Have been slacking on fishing the hard water due to Ol' Lady restrictions. Those restriction's just "ended". Have a couple snowmachines, nice sled and a new gas auger. Live right on the boundary of the KNWR. Mile 77 of the Sterling Hwy. Looking forward to fishing the surrounding lakes. However REALLY looking for info on fishing Skilak. Everyone I've met who's been fishing it for years have pretty tight lips about when, where , and how on that great lake. PM me with info if your willing to part with it and don't want it out there for the general public. Love the winter, fishing on the ice, and getting outdoors.........will fish.......anytime, anywhere! Hope to see you out there!

Have lived in Alaska for 13 years, first 10 in Kodiak and last 3 three in Kenai. Ice fished a lot in Montana and Wyoming before moving to Alaska. Kodiak is too warm for good ice so only fished on the salt there. Have been exploring the lakes on the Kenai Peninsula and trying to figure things out since I moved here. Welcome to Team Alaska KenaiHardH20! This Ice Shanty and especially the Alaska forum is definitely helpful! I know once I found it I was hooked. It does make me jealous though sometimes of the boys a little farther north with their Lakers and Burbot. I work on the Tustumena and my girlfriend is from Kodiak so I know where your coming from. A little colder here on the K Pen. Welcome.

I know the season is almost over but better late than never. I go by the handle of alcanron and have lived in Alaska for almost 7 years now and really got into hardcore ice fishing this year. I have mainly filled my funnel with Harding Lake. I have had some decent success there this year as the pics speak for themselves. The two main reasons I fish this lake is it's close(gas ain't cheap) and it produces very large fish!

Hey all! New to the forum but not to the hard water. Been ice fishing for about 30yrs now mostly back in Wisconsin.  I have been in alaska for about 11 yrs now.  For the most part i have been just dinking arounf the Anchorage area lakes but this year I'm wanting to get out to some other lakes looking for some bigger fish.  For the most part during the hard water season I'm out to have some fun and the freezer already has enough fish for me to eat so it a quick pic and back in the hole it goes.  Any advice is more then welcome.

Can I be an honorary team Alaska member?  I spent the summer working for the University of Alaska Fairbanks on their forest growth and yield project. While I was there we traveled to work all over Alaska and with that comes fishing of course. When I flew into Fairbanks (May 21) I saw some lakes with ice on them and my heart began to pump at an excessive rate. A large piece of me will always be in Alaska, until my return.

Hello my fellow hard water enthusiasts,

I stumbled upon this site just yesterday afternoon and couldn't get registered fast enough.  I have been in Alaska for exactly 4 weeks now and I can't wait any longer, I need to fish. Problem is, I don't know much about the area lakes or where to go to find current ice conditions. I'm hoping that is going to be solved by joining this forum. I'm new to AK, but have been ice fishing the mountain west for over a decade. I wasn't able to bring much when I moved, but I made certain that two ice rods and a small winter tackle bag made the trip with me.  I am in Anchorage and have been reading up on the local lakes that are stocked, but other than that, I haven't found much information. I'm glad to have found this site and hope I will soon be contributing with reports and pics from around my area. Any info or advice will always be welcome. Thanks for letting me join.

C'ya on the hard deck,

Hello all, I'm brand new to this site, and fairly new to ice fishing all together. Grew up in Alaska but lived in Homer, so never really felt the need to drill holes to fish. Been in Fairbanks since '95 and still haven't done much winter fishing yet. Fished Quartz a couple times last year and kind of caught the bug I guess. Hit the Tanana last weekend for burbot with the kids. It's snow-go distance from my house so I imagine I'll spend quite a bit of time down there this season.

Anyways, thanks for the site, I've already learned a ton from you guys!

Hi.  My name's Colin.  I'm fairly new to Alaska...this will be my first winter here in Anchorage.  I came from western Montana where most of my icefishing was for perch and pike.  I've seen this iceshanty website before...I used to read the posts to get an "idea" of where to go...but I've never been a member.  I guess it's my turn to contribute!  :)  Any advice on where to go would be helpful.

Hello Team Alaska!  My name is Brian.  I've dropped by Iceshanty several occasions over the years and figured it was time to drill down membership and get to jiggin' here.  Some of you know me already from the rafting, kayaking, sport-fishing, and fly-out float trips scene --- summertime through late fall.

Winter season is a timeline when I enjoy cruising the snowbound reaches of Alaska in search of just about anything that swims 'neath the ice and stalks a presentation.  I reckon most on here feel the same.

This season, I'm seeking to specialize more on certain species such as larger Lake Trout... focusing on prime habitats and better techniques.  Information, experience, and local practice... even dumb luck is key --- that is the primary reasoning for my membership (always more to learn every day).

Growing up in Alaska, I've been on the the ice fishing seen for many years and raft/fishing guided the past 29 years.  When on the ice, I still hand auger my holes (mostly reliability, fitness, or weight-savings) and go about it somewhat traditionally.  Go with the jiggin' rod/real most of the time.  The best thing about ice-fishing ----  I like sharing and showing others the fun and chill of the sport.

Cheers, hello all, and a Happy Thanksgiving! :)
Brian

Hello. My name is Jason and I live and fish on the Kenai Peninsula. Haven't been out on the ice much these past few years. Then my wife bought me a Q3 for my birthday last month ;D  Been telling myself I was gonna get one. It seems now I have caught the ice fever again. I am trying the Trustworthy derby this year and shooting at least for a straight flush (already gotta 1.14 lb kokanee, 1.47 char and .80 rainbow) no lunkers but well on my way. Have never pulled any of the other species through the ice they are calling for (laker, pike for the straight flush; add burbot, grayling and whitefish for the royal flush) and ran into this PRICELESS and very addicting ice fishing blog site while doing research for catching the more exotic of the species. Anyway, I will probably be askin' you gents (and ladies?) some questions and if you have any yourselves, don't hesitate. Good luck on the ice!

Hello All,

I just moved to the Kenai Penn from Arkansas.  I'm really looking forward to hunting and fishing in AK.  I will be living down the road from Scout Lake, so I've been doing all the reading I can on that lake so that I may be able to fish this winter.  I fished the Kenai this summer for silvers and reds and was pretty sucessful.  I used to work on the slope so I am used to ice and snow.  I can't wait to drill my first hole in the ice maybe in a couple of weeks.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks and nice to meet ya'll.   ;D

Hello.  New member here.  I am trying to get me son a lifetime slam of all Alaska freshwater species.  I grew up in Fairbanks.  He caught his first fish (stocked rainbow) at Ballaine Lake at age two.  He is now twelve and has caught:Trout: Rainbow; Dolly Varden, Arctic Char, Grayling, Burbot, Blackfish, Tomcod, Red salmon, King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Landlocked species of king and silver, hooligan, Long Nosed Suckerfish, And Pike..  He needs, as far as I can figure: Sheefish, Greater and lesser Cisco (whitefish) and lake, brook, cutthroat, and steelhead trout.  We want to go to Lake Louise and get a big Laker.  Now live iN Anchorage, any suggestions on how to target the Lakers there? Thanks.... And btw..great site.  We ice fish often and are looking for new ideas.

I've lived here for about 7 years and fish a lot in the summer, but today is the first time I've ever been ice fishing. Looks like I'm going to continue! I bought a couple of poles and a shelter. Need to start looking at augurs, and trying to figure out what to buy for tackle. I will probably fish in the valley most of the time, but the friends who took us out today want to go try Summit and Hidden next.

Hello everyone I'm Kris.
I was born in Minnesota, but raised in Oregon.
One would think ice fishing is in my blood, it probably is. I really enjoy it, but I can't catch a pike to save my life!  I must say it really bothers me too!
I moved up here the first week of January and have only fished for pike for three days. I know I can't expect to be successful every time, but you'd think I'd get something!  I use to be a steelhead fisherman and now I'm trying to fill the void!  I guess that's why it's fishing and not catching! Lol. I'll get it figured out sooner or later.
If you see a gray Toyota with a U of O sticker on the canopy stop by and introduce yourself.

Cheers, Kris

I've been poring-over old posts in the Alaska forum for tips on river fishing for burbot.  I've had great success set-lining in lakes, and I'd love to find em and learn to catch em in the Yukon and Takhini rivers near Whitehorse.

Anyone who's thinking of some cross-border fishing, fire me a PM!

Has anyone ever fished Byers lake it's the one by the veterans memorial not sure if I spelled it right LOL, I was wondering how the fishing was there. Also has anyone done any fishing for grayling that's not a days drive.

My name is Esa and I just moved to Palmer with my family.  I have three daughters of who 2 love to fish only if they are biting),  we are heading to finger lake today as I here to bite is on.  I grew up ice fishing in North Idaho to it has always been a family tradition along with a way to get outside in the winter.  I like long walks on the beach, books and cuddling.

Hello all,
Grew up in Minnesota ice fishing all winter with my dad when I was young and then whenever I could once I was driving.  Joined the Air Force and didn't get to do it after that, until now.  Finally made it to Alaska (in 2009) and getting back into ice fishing.  A lot different up here and was surprised that not many people out there and no permanent house out on the lakes like MN.  Anyway, just found this site last night and always looking for tips, advice, good lakes etc.  Thanks,
Troy

Check the ADF&G stocking info pages. They have lake maps and directions as well as the stocking data on what species and how many they put in.
Another good one is the book the highway angler ice fishing Alaska by Gunnar Pedersen. I really only use it to find the public access to the lakes in my area but it is good for that as many lakes have acccesses that are hard to find.
It is nice as he has a lot of the road system lakes listed with species available and directions to the public access.

Hello boys and girls,  Im a Travis.  Been busy working the slope last 10 years and havent had much time for hard water fishing.  Now that my little girl is in kindergarten (Im a single dad) Ive been home to put her on the bus.  Been hitting a few of the lakes by my house trying to catch a few 'bows.  Its been pretty fun, but chasing lakers is kind of my dream.  Hopeing to get some time on good laker lakes on good weather weekends that my daughter dont freeze her ice off.  Anyways my main hobbies are hunting, fishing and trapping, which seams to be common enough...  Hope to meet some of you guys and if you recognize me anywhere dont be bashful to say hello.  Good luck with the tight lines!

Hello all,  Here's a little about me.. I have been in Alaska now for 4 years and look forward to many more years here.  I very much enjoy ice fishing and I especially love to take people out and introduce them to ice fishing.  I take my kids out ice fishing as much as my wife will let me, which is almost every weekend.  I also love to hunt, fish, camp and ride ATV's but that gets me through the warm months until I can ice fish again.

Howdy guys. Ive been up here with my wife for 1 year now after moving from Utah and I'm loving the fishing, especially the ice fishing.
I live in the valley and last year I think I got out ice fishing around 25 times. Best fish through the ice for me last year was. 21" 4 pound Char. I Figured a few lakes out during the summer and I'm hoping to tear them up through the ice this year. Anyway Im hoping to hit the ice tomorrow for the first time this season!

    Hi Everyone
I'm new to the group and new to ice fishing. Moved from Oklahoma to Alaska, ice fishing has always been a dream of mine. Went out last week bought some poles, ice shelter, and big buddy heater. I was so pumped up, had a inch of clear ice on a couple lakes, and then it happened 8 inches of snow. Ice started melting, now it's 35° and raining . but lows next week are supposed to be close to 0° , I'm so ready to do this !!!!

Only been up here for one winter but I hit the ice fishing pretty hard and caught my fair share of trout, burbot, and char around the Anchorage area last year. Looking to get into some lakers this year. Does anyone know the ice thickness out on Lake Louise? I was hoping to head up there and try my luck this week. Any information or pointers on how to catch them is greatly appreciated!

Hey there!  I'm Jonathon/Johnny/John/"ugh, THAT guy again?!", I'm 28 have two young kids (for most trips my 3yo daughter tries to join, her younger brother will likely wait until next season).  I'm in Anchorage, I need to replace my sled, tent, and heater.  I use my Nils 4.5" fitted to my cordless drill for most outings, and plan on buying a 6" auger to go with the same setup. I have a Fishphone underwater camera system that is pretty fantastic, and tons of fun to play with.  Let me know if anybody ever wants to join up and hit the hard deck this winter sometime!

Name is Rick.  I started ice fishing in Minnesota when I was probably 5 years old.  Had a lot of good times with my dad and grandpa.  I have been in Alaska for 36 years and have fished some of the local lakes in the Anchorage/Valley areas and down on the Kenai.  I look forward to getting out and doing some more exploration and hope to see members out on the ice.  Have a great season and be safe out there.

lots of stocker rainbows and char around town. most of the char are pretty beat up looking from living in the hatcheries. Head out towards the valley and you can find nicer fish. Big lake has some pretty nice fish in it. Thats were i normally go if i fish around town. Generally head 3-4 hours north for catch and release laker fishing. Not nearly as many people on this ak forum then there use to be but they people that hang around i generally pretty helpful.
