sweeeet! no good ice on any of the lakes around by me yet for whitefish. this winter has been a huge disapointment. >:(
-
is that on lake simcoe?
Yes off Innisfil Beach Park.
If I can find safe ice I may try for some whities & lakers on Saturday. Most deep water places not good ice yet.
-
My first and only whitefish sofar through the ice while fishing for pike and burbot a few winters ago.
It was 5.8lbs.

Todays whitefish. Nothing big, just the averege ones for around here. Top one is a landlocked salmon.

-
well done. is that an atlantic?
-
Landlocked salmon. Basically same fish as an atlantic. We have lots of landlocks around here. They are fun to fish for and tasty.

Thanks fisheyefool. :)
I was indeed happy with my first whitefish through the ice, but, on this lake they get even bigger. ;)
I have heard of some of the ones they have commercially netted out of this lake reach 9 lbs and our Provincial record sits at 11lbs 8oz. :o
There are probably even bigger ones out there but, not too many folks target them, and those that do don't bother to regester them.

looks like a cisco tightliner
-
nope...thats a lake superior whitefish
-
Look at the mouth, it does not look like a whitefish, and I fish Lake Superior. A whitefish's mouth simply does not open like that.

Hey guys I was fishing portage lake in Michigan it is connected to lake Michigan . I was after perch we were fishing in about 55 fow and they came in about 30 foot down . I was told by guys that fish the lake a lot it was a whitefish but I was not sure because I have never caught them before . I was planning on smoking it but I not to sure now .
-
yeah its a cisco. good size one! they are actually pretty good smoked. yeah you never know where you will find ciscos in the water column. they are all over the place. whitefish, 9 times out of 10 are on or just off bottom. pretty much a glorified carp! haha.

They are pretty good fried if eaten fresh and take the dark meat off teh backside. But smoked is my fav for cisco ;) That is a dandy cisco!

Here's a couple of whitefish vids from Big Bay De Noc. The "Double Trouble jig" from Walleye's Choice out did the swedish pimple again.
