Good Day Niru-san

Thank you for showing us how you fish.  I really enjoy seeing different
methods for fishing. I noticed a couple of small fish in a tin in the lower
right of the picture. Were they smelt?  Also, how heavy is your shelter?

fish on,

Do you mostly target smelt through the ice over there? Do you target any gamefish?

Good luck this season, and keep the photos coming!

Yes, we usually fish smelt in ice fishing. Bass fishermen also fish smelt in ice season.
I have various shelters. This time, I took Frabill hub shelter, it’s about 10kg.

>TT-san
Pic is my smelt fishing tackle. Hook is 6, sinker is 5.4 or 3.5g. Bait is maggot.

Niru_04 , thanks for posting all the pictures . We currently have an unusual warm spell here in Pennsylvania , so your ice fishing pictures really help satisfy our down time waiting for our lakes to freeze . Are the ice shelters in your pictures insulated or are they like regular camping tents ? Tight lines to you and thanks again .

There is an Iphone App that you can translate with, also I want to Add that you must be all right as you have A Ski Doo. What would be very good is to find an English speaking fisherman who is also skilled making sushi, that would be epic.

I was wondering if you all are limited to the number of lines and hooks on your rigs, they fish smelt with multiple lines in Maine.

Kettle is a tool inherent to the stove, and we use it to make coffee and green tea etc.
Pic is my shelters. I may have posted it on other topics.
Japanese style shelter is like an umbrella, opens with one action and is short. That's exactly the right height as we usually set a toga on the ground or a very low chair and do fishing. It can be used for over 10 years.

I'm sorry. Because I am borrowing the power of translation software, there may be times when I can not understand the exact meaning.
This area is National Park, so hunting is prohibited. In my prefecture, the animals that are usually hunted are wild boar, black bear, duck, pheasant, deer, rabbit. The hunting season is from November 15th to February 15th. Unfortunately, animals in the eastern region still have radioactivity effects (cesium) left and can not be eaten.

I drove out to lake Arthur yesterday to see if the ice was safe yet . I guess it must be ! LOL ! Here are a few pictures . Sorry the pictures are fuzzy . It was snowing pretty hard when taking them .

The thermal floor material prevents the floor from becoming flooded, so I like it.

Niru, keep the pictures coming! Love your set up. What I'm interested in is your heater. I don't see a propane bottle so I am assuming that its battery powered?
On a side note, I spent 2.5 years in Japan while in the Navy. I was there from 91-93. I was stationed in Yokuska. Loved your country. Very beautiful country. Even hiked to the top of Mt Fuji and spent the night on top it. Never met a more polite curteous country of people. Would love to go back to visit.
Keep the pictures coming!

Yes, my sled is ski-doo Tundra LT 600ACE (left of pic) that is remodeling the seat etc. There was a ski - doo dealer nearby, it was the cheapest and I can carry lots of luggage, so I bought it. We can also purchase Ski-doo, Polaris, ArcticCat and Yamaha even in Japan. I like it, but it is tippy, because the ski stance is narrow. For ice fishing, I think Expedition sport on the right is more convenient than TundraLT .

It's tool of removing smelt. If I pull it up from below, it will catch off. Material is pencil sack and clip. It is commercially available in Japan. In Japan, as the number of fished smelt is emphasized, there are a lot of people using it.

your tundra may seem tippy, but if you ever have to travel through 3ft of powder soft snow you will be glad of it, because it allows the snowmobile to float above the snow and not bog down and get stuck :-). I have the same model in the 550fan and love it. Love seeing how you fish over there and the different fishing gadgets on the other side of the pond. :-)

Here in michigan smelt are only in a select few bodies of water compared to the lakes available.... We have aound 10,000 lakes in michigan id imagine smelt only inhabit less that 1% of them so other species are usually the main goal

The target fish of ice fishing in Japan is almost only smelt. Actually I also want to catch trout, however, in most places the October to March is the ban fishing period. There is one place to release the ban in March, so I’d like to catch the trout there. Fishing tool which the flag stands on the ice, I was yearning, so I imported it last year. I can't wait to use them. I think Michigan is a wonderful place. My FB fishing friends also live in Michigan and enjoy ice fishing.

I know I’ve asked before, but can’t remember what you said. Do you have any bluegill or bass in the areas you fish? I know they were imported then became invasive in many lakes. Since you have panoptix now, finding them in the shallower water shouldn’t be too hard. Bluegills often stay a little off bottom so the sonar can see them.

Yes, Bass and Gill are living in my lake. And they are certified to foreign invasive creatures in Japan. But Bass fishing is very popular in the open water season as it is silent here. This lake “Hibara Lake” is one of the most popular lake of Bass fishing in Japan. Every week fishing convention is held. A lot of Bass fishing people also fish smelt in the ice season. The fishing method of smelt is very favored by Japanese people and we are crazy about it. Since we Japanese like a little change, we enjoy a slight change on the rod tip. It may be like Zen practice. I am still in training. People who can feel it are so respected as smelt fishing expert. As of now, my panoptix system can’t capture Bass and Gill. I don’t fish Bass in the open water season, because I’m crazy about Kokanee fishing. The panoptix system is also so useful for this fishing.

Hi niru-04,
I have also been enjoying your posts and photos, well done. :)
It's neat to see how folks ice fish in other parts of the world and the species they fish for.

How thick is your ice on average?
In my province of Saskatchewan, it is usually 2 to 3 feet thick, depending on how cold our winter is and area.

Some people in SK. also eat smelt, but, all our fish come from the store, no lakes with them in it.
Most people here use frozen smelt to catch other larger fish species like, Northern Pike, burbot or lake trout.

Keep the pictures and posts coming. Good ice fishing to you.  :icefish:

An area with this lake is one of the most heavy snowfall areas in Japan, snow is piled up about 6 to 8 feet every year. However, as the temperature is not very low, the quality of the lake's ice is not good. The snow that fell on the surface of the lake is freezing. Its thickness is now about 2 feet, but it’ll be up to 4 feet.

Niru san:
I was interested to see your "snail shelter" These were common in the 1970's when I fished in Wisconsin, I have not seen them since, but I have always wanted one. Perhaps I can make one if I can find the plastic clips to secure the plastic to the hoops. My son is moving to Japan next week to teach English, so maybe he can find them for me. I know several people in Japan that fish, but I think you are the first I have seen that fishes through the ice. Is that common there?

I take a 30m tape measure on ice and use it for measure the distance from the hole.
Succeeded this time, I was able to find a place where there are many fish up to about 5 m above the bottom.

Thank you. :)
I hope your son enjoy life in Japan. The story that "snail shelter"  was used also in the United States is interesting. Even in Japan it is very popular in some areas.
Garmin panoptix system is very useful. But that is not common in Japan. I may be the only one who uses it in Japan. :) :)  Because I’m very crazy for ice fishing.

Yes, I like it very much. :) I think it is also useful for ice fishing and Live Scope system is more effective, but Live Scope  is expensive and I can’t purchase it in this season.
I also use them in the open water season for kayak fishing. It’s so fun like Destroyer vs Submarine battle game.

It’s a blast to fish with. With down view I love that you can see several feet around you even in shallow water, and you can see which direction fish are moving. This feature is also very useful when fishing in a shelter, more than one person can use use the same unit and be able to tell who’s jig is who’s and when a fish is interested in one over another. So much more can be learned from the live image vs the graph or flasher.
Using the forward view to Pin point spots to drill holes along depth changes/structure is a breeze, almost no need for contour maps (even trolling in the boat). Even if it doesn’t find the bottom hugging fish very well, you can still see them with some patience. If the fish are suspended, youd almost wouldn’t want to fish without it.

Yes, I didn't stack. In that sense, I think it is good.
There used to be a terrible thing when my sled stacked. The color of ice at that time was similar to today's ice color.
I judged that there is a dangerous place depending on the place.

I also went ice fishing, and tried to new method of finding fish.
Fix Garmin 45CV to the handle of snowmobile, drill a hole just beside snowmobile.
Drop GT10HN transducer connected to 45CV, watch the screen reaction.
If I can’t find a school of fish, I will move quickly.
With this, I can speed up the search for fishing points.

In the middle of fishing, I ran on the lake and ate delicious ramen.

Now that’s the way to find some fish! People “run and gun” like that here in the U.S. for all types of fish. Keeps you busy fishing and not just camping.
That bowl of ramen looks delicious. I don’t often eat fresh ramen here, only when we go out to Japanese restaurants. I get ramen because I don’t like seafood (but love fishing  ::)).

Hello Niru,
Thanks again for sharing your fishing adventures. Are you allowed to fish at night? I love smelt fishing but in our area it is so much better at night. We put a bright green light under the ice just outside our shanty and it brings the smelt right up to the surface. During the day they are usually near the bottom in 10-20m of water but at night we can bring them up to just under the ice and they often swim right into the hole.

Before, I was able to do night fishing night at my lake. But a man died by Carbon monoxide poisoning in tent at night, so night fishing was forbidden.
Before, I took my son who was a primary school student on the lake, we enjoyed night fishing together. It was very fun and that is a very good memory.
But there are still lakes where night fishing is possible.
This picture is taken on that lake two years ago. Green light imported from the US. It is a very beautiful light.

Niru-san,
I was hoping for some ice fishing pics from you. Our ice season has been delayed here as well. Some anglers have been on ice here. Hope you have a safe and fun season when you get good ice!!😎 we’ll all be waiting for pics!!😁

Today I went to dome boat on frozen lake and done smelt fishing.
It’s a boat of 22 people and the fee is about $ 35 a day.

Holy Carp that is AWESOME! reminds me of the charter boats i used to take in Florida. 30 anglers on one big ass 100+ft boat that had a kitchen !
