I am hitting a private pond one week from tomorrow. Visions of monster gills dancing in my head.
I just wish this dang wind would lay down so we can start making some ice. I want to go fishing this weekend.
As Whitetips advises BE CAREFUL. Yes, we have really cold temps (about 3 degrees as I write this) however we also got around 10-12 inches of wind driven snow here at Merritt. The insulating blanket of snow along with winds will hamper consistent ice depths plus snow cover may disguise weak/thin spots. Drill as you go and heed the ice safety & escape advice posted here and other places. If you can stand the temps I would guess there would be fishable ice on some refuge lakes and the back of Boardman Creek by the weekend. Use caution and common sense wherever you decide to go.
Despite frigid temps, checked 10 ponds yesterday - all 100% open due to wave action. Tonight it's supposed to settle down to 9-10 MPH around Lincoln - creek arms and basin or protected ponds should be shielded enough to develop at least a good 1/2". Winds pick back up Friday afternoon, but Friday night and Saturday are calm and cold. Sunday ice prediction - 2.5-3". Is that a reach?
