The weather is looking great for ice.    Looking at South Dakota might have to make an early trip to Webster.

I am hopefully predicting at least 4" by Sunday - if the forecast holds true.

I hope we're lining up for a long season - last two were too short for my liking.  If we develop a solid base in early December, just might stick around through the highs until late February.  I'd be just fine with pushing open water fishing out a few weeks this year!

I visited multiple ponds today ranging in size from 1/4 ac to 5 ac and everything had at most a half inch of near slush.  If the ice chart is somewhat accurate provided on the forum recently, the average temps from Wed thru Sunday should leave most of us in SE NE walking by Sunday, if not Saturday.  I'll head out Friday and drill some test holes from my dock and provide an update.  Wonder if 3" by Friday afternoon is wishful thinking?  What's the over/under?

We've got a forecast you hard water guys are gonna love.  Tomorrow a low of 10 with highs of no more than low 20's and single digit to below 0 lows out through 12/12.  There is presently skim ice in the back of Boardman Creek that should firm up and may allow foot traffic by the weekend depending on wind etc.  I just talked to my bait dealer and should have waxies and minnows coming in Friday.  The season has arrived.

Be careful out there.  I do not have any details but am hearing about a couple of kids over in Iowa who fell through on a farm pond and did not make it out. :(  Be patient, it's coming, make sure it is safe!

According to the 10 day for Lincoln, once we drop below freezing tonight we won't see above freezing until Thursday next week - where a high of 33 is predicted!

Might be futile effort - but figured the average temps merely by averaging the high/low daily temps.  Wednesday - Sunday look like this:

Wed:  21 ave 1.4" ice growth
Thurs:  16 ave 1.5" ice growth
Fri: 11.5 ave 1.4"
Sat:  16.5 ave .9"
Sun:   14 ave .8"

If I'm even close, should have 4" by Saturday AM and 6" by Monday AM.

As Whitetips advises BE CAREFUL.  Yes, we have really cold temps (about 3 degrees as I write this) however we also got around 10-12 inches of wind driven snow here at Merritt.  The insulating blanket of snow along with winds will hamper consistent ice depths plus snow cover may disguise weak/thin spots.  Drill as you go and heed the ice safety & escape advice posted here and other places.  If you can stand the temps I would guess there would be fishable ice on some refuge lakes and the back of Boardman Creek by the weekend.  Use caution and common sense wherever you decide to go.

And ice formation and growth did not read the charts. ;)

Despite frigid temps, checked 10 ponds yesterday - all 100% open due to wave action.  Tonight it's supposed to settle down to 9-10 MPH around Lincoln - creek arms and basin or protected ponds should be shielded enough to develop at least a good 1/2".  Winds pick back up Friday afternoon, but Friday night and Saturday are calm and cold.  Sunday ice prediction - 2.5-3".  Is that a reach?

I'm with you 100%.  Probably fishable but I'm gonna push it out a day.  Already planning on taking Monday off.
