Bait Shops in MD
« on: Jan 08, 2014, 09:08 PM »
Just a question for everyone, I'm new to ice fishing in MD, done it in upstate NY, but around here bait is hard to come by? I live in Rockville, MD, and was wondering what the closest bait shop for ice fishing would be.

Minnows are the tough ones to come by.  Spikes and waxies, one can order on line, or go to petco and they usually have wax worms and meal worms.  For minnows, theres a place near dcl in Addison Pa, its called Nicklows, they sell fatheads by the pound....good bait and nice folks.  Ive also gotten rosey reds from petco in a pinch.....just try to pick out the big ones....

Good luck with that one.  Most of the stores have closed thru the years.  Fox's in Frederick has minnows, sometimes..  Maggots and waxies...  I order online I like Vados bait.   Shipping is pricey, but one order usually lasts all season.

Heading to Deep Creek, if Bassin Box in Lavale is still open he normally has a nicE selection of bait.

Other than that I can't help ya.

Good luck.  REB9

Petsmart & Petco have mealworms & waxworms. You have to ask a clerk to get them for you, they have them in the back.Ask for the giant mealworms, the other mealworms are too small for bait.Petco has small crappie sized minnows for 15 cents each. The ones I bought were large enough for bait, about the size os large fatheads. The minnows they had at Petsmart were too small for bait.

There is a Bass pro in Arundell mills mall.  They have waxies and worms, no minnows though.  Try searching google for bait in your area.  What part of upstate did you fish in?  I'm from the Syracuse area, there is some good fishing up there.

Walmarts normally carry crawlers year round.

Bowleys does not carry fatheads.... just shiners and bull minnows. I use bull minnows, since shiners don't hold up.  I have suggested fatheads to the owner several times....but no love.

Clyde's is another source in SW Balto.

Fish Bites in Bloodworm flavor will be all you find this time of year.

FYI.....Tochtermans has the best bloods in the Mid- Atlantic, in season.

It's in Baltimore

Tochtermans is in East Baltimore....not the best location, but still worth the trip. Many folks reserve the blood worms and the price is always competitive. They say they are the oldest fishing tackle store in America.

Sometimes walmart sells them.I believe they call them redworms.I don't think Petsmart or Petco sells them. When you get bait at Walmart this time of year be sure to look at them before you buy them.Several weeks ago I checked the redworms at Walmart and they were all rotten, but the babycawlers and crawlers were good.I have been catching some nice trout at Rocky Gap on the babycrawlers on tipups.

I googled bait for your area and it looks like there is a bunch of places.  That doesnt mean they have bait.  Look at gas stations new a place ppl fish.  If your looking to buy larva check out this website called Grubco.  They will hook you up.  Good prices and quick.
