Hello. A poster from another forum suggested I monitor the best ice deals in this forum, as I am in the market for an ice shelter. He wants a 4 person one. I am not sure what brand to be focusing on- he mentioned Eskimo and Frabill. Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should be looking for? He mentioned that they can be $600 or less. I can spend more like $300 or a little higher. $600 is out of my price range.  Is this the thread that I should watch for Black Friday deals? If anyone can remember what online stores offered last Black Friday, in terms of brand and price, then I can start thinking about what I am going to do. Any info would be appreciated.

I assume at that price range you are only interested in a hub type?

Above post is mine. If anyone can recommend the best insulated shelter with the most bang for the buck for 4 people, I can also watch on eBay; although I don't think I will run on to any deals there. Thanks.

I am sorry, but I don't know what hub type is? The person who wants this is my son, and I am his mom. But I guess that being a lady doesn't exclude me from being educated on ice shelters,LOL. I am here to learn, and hope my son takes me too!

Rather than looking on Ebay I would recommend looking at craigslist. These are big and heavy. Try keywords like "Ice Fishing, Ice Fishing Shelter, Ice Shelter, Ice Shanty"

Flipover style shelter.  These have a plastic sled under them that the shelter folds down into.  Hubs don't have a floor or a sled to haul them.

At that price the Eskimo Quickfish 5i would be a good choice. I have one and it's great.

Thank you-I have looked on craigslist, but will keep looking. I am in Ohio, so probably not as many people have them, when compared to upper north states.

I am not sure which he would prefer-the sled would make transport easier, and the hub styles look roomy. I hope he is not reading this forum! He might figure out who I am, LOL. I will continue to check in here daily to see if anyone happens to see something coming up for Black Friday. Thanks everyone!

For 4 people a hub shelter is going to be what you want, in my opinion.. Most flip overs only hold 2 people, some have 3 seats. Also need to have a pick-up or suv to fit the flip over, another thing to keep in mind is even smallest two man insulated flip overs weight 85-95 lbs without gear. The big flip overs can weight up to 130lbs or so? I'm guessing you would do a lot of walking out in Ohio so something to think about.  Hubs are less convenient but expand big and pack down small. Will need to a sled to carry the other gear in though. I know the eskimo hub bags have backpack like straps on them that some people use.

You may want to post on the Ohio forum someone may have a used one. If they are not a paying member they can’t post something for sale. Maybe worth a shot. Good luck Sounds like a good mom trying to hook up the boy for ice fishing!

Guys, this FishUSA Deal...  This probably won’t be exciting for too many, but you can buy a $50 St. Croix Avid ice rod and save $175 on a Shimano Stella.  A $700 reel for $525.  Posting for the few...  Shimano’s are never on sale.  A rare opportunity for the right people who can afford it.

Thank DBV.  I bought a Shimano Exsence 3000MHG in the spring to go on 13 Fishing Archangel spinning rod at $540 plus tax.  For those that understand the numbers, I’m kicking myself in the butt.  Hindsight is 20/20.  The Exsence is a phenomenal reel and I was happy to use it most of the summer, but I’ve always wanted a Stella...

Good to see you back in here DN.  Looking for reel deals, but my wife would kill me if I bought a couple Stella’s.  Fantastic price but $1,050 for 2 is a bit much

I am also in the market for a shelter fitting your description. I have done a bunch of research recently and would say the best bang for your buck (what i am looking for) would be an

eskimo fatfish 949i

It is a hub style (pop up style) that has an extra wide bottom so it has more room to fish but is still a good size that it transports easily and can be set up by one person and roomy for the days when its just teo people (like when it is him and mom  ;D ). You can buy them for 300$ but I've seen some sales down around 275. Its possible that they may go down lower for black friday deals but regardless its within your provided price range.

There is also another thread on this forum called something like "black friday deals" but this thread has had more hits and posts. I hope you find what you and your son are looking for on this forum. Its a great place full of good people.

Be safe on the ice and keep being a great mom!
It doesn't sound that appealing to most people I talk to, but going out onto a frozen lake and staring into a hole for the day is my favorite thing to do.

Quite a few options at https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/eskimo-fat-fish-949-ice-fishing-shelter?a=872605 for under $300.  A lot of huts are now made with a quilted fabric to help insulate them.  They're better but alot more expensive than the traditional nylon.   With Black Friday sales I don't think you should have any problem finding a hut within your budget.  Shapell, Clam, Frabill, Eskimo, Rapala and Otter are some of the reputable brands - I'm sure there are others as well but that should get you started.

Might want to add your location to your profile ...could be a deal near by or a big box retailer/local retailer near you that members may be able to give you a heads up on coupons percentage off deals and/or shipping. Also subscribing to retailers email is good for codes and discounts .

Dunham's sends a 20% off coupon probably every week. I'm not sure of their ice fishing selection, and they do not do any online retail, so you would need to stop in and find out, or call your closest store and ask about their shanty selection if you do not have one nearby. sign up for their emails, they send lots of "super coupons" too

Last year they had the Frabill 371 combos for $25 locally. I haven't seen any yet this year.

Somehow I always picture that it's the precious fly fishermen that can talk themselves into dropping $500- $700 on a Hardy reel to pair up with their $1200 Orvis 5-wt rod in order

to bring the experience of reeling in a 10" brookie to transcendent levels. Personally, it's rare that I need to move a fish more than twelve feet to the ice surface and that even the

crummiest reel I've ever owned is capable of that. It's certainly not my place to tell you how to spend your money but I'd like to understand how you think about your equipment.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

fishingp ; depending on where you are in Ohio, you could prolly get away with an eskimo 949 hub. it doesn,t have the insulation the 949i does, but is totally usable in our climes(west pa. here on I80) we don,t get the frigid weather(minus30-50) they get in northern states. it,s what i have ,n, it works very well. should be able to find for around $200. this will be my 3rd yr. with it ,n, love it. wire

If you haven't treated yourself to a nice reel, don't start! You won't want to use your cheap ones anymore! (And none of my reels even approach an Exsence or Stella!)
