"Seasoning" Pike Bait?
« on: Jan 20, 2011, 10:15 AM »
I had never targeted pike through the ice until this past long weekend but I was given a tip at an ice fishing seminar to add cod liver oil to your dead shiners and cut bait. Do any of you pike fisherman do that? Does it work? What kind of cod liver oil do you use?

ive never heard of it but it sounds like it works. I know guys that use 8 inch mackerel because of there excesive amount of scent and oil so that sounds like it would work let me know if you try it. I usually just leave my bait in a small plastic bag and make small slits in them so the blood and scent covers them inside and out. Good luck!!

I tried it this weekend in Vermont and didn't get the results I expected. Then again, I'm not sure if the cod liver oil I used was the right kind. It was white. I thought it would be clear.

nice but it might be like gulp. Ive had days were gulp won't work any better than a regular scented bait and other days its dynamite and you can't stop catching them. I think it has to be something you try over an extended period of time

nice fish man.

Thanks. Since it was my first large pike, I was a little nervous snatching it out of the hole. As I brought its head up, it's jaws opened wide and I thought I was about to stick my hand in a bear trap.

Wish I knew what it was like. Never caught a pike thru the ice. Congrats

Use big, live suckers, cut the tails off, stab them a few times beyond the vent. Slows them down, they make a lot of "injured fish" commotion trying to swim, and the scent bleeds from them. Caught larger pike in water less than 6 foot. Some where there was only 2 feet water below the ice! I always adhere to the old saying "The bigger the bait, the bigger the fish".
