Jigs or spoons??
« on: Dec 02, 2012, 11:09 PM »
I've got a lake with some good crappie and bluegill. What do you prefer jigs or spoons? Witch ones? Tipped with bait or plain?

Fairy jigs, gold, black, or white, tipped with Waxies
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

I really like the slender spoons, or demon spoons for crappie.  If the water is not to deep, I like the little cecils for crappie, and gills.

Generally jigs, but their mood/attitude can change on and off, around the clock. If they're there and quit hitting one it's not a waste of time to try the other.............or a Rap, live minnow, same thing but much smaller/darker/lighter.................Don't limit oneself to what may/may not work

I'm with Swift; nothing wrong with a go to lure,  but the mood of any fish can be fickle. I noticed one of my best lures on my last trip was a tiny, gold Wolfram jig tipped with a maggot, but I often do well with a Ratso and plastic, or a Forage minnow spoon tipped with a wax worm. To that end, I rarely go out without six or seven rods rigged with a variety of jigs and spoons.

Frostees, bobber fry, smaller swedish pimples, whatever they like. I always tip with bait too.

Both! Really depends on the day. I like spoons for starters, but finesse jigs work well once you have located them.

Good deal, who needs to screw around tying wisps of thread like line in the wind and cold.

For crappie I prefer to use a Swedish pimple (gold). If I'm using a jig it's usually a forage minnow fry.

I jig both. Sometimes they want jigs/plastics, and sometimes they want spoons. Sometimes I'll get in a school and pull 5-6 out with plastics then they will all turn into chasers and not biters.. I'll drop a spoon down and they will start hitting again.

Mostly jigs here. Plastics and wax worms work good for me.

gotta give em what they want...this morning they were on tubes with no bait, cranked up hitting hard...wind came in sky cleared up, high pressure took over....had to switch over to demons and spikes, just sucking it in, drive ya nuts..

my best producing bait this year has been a golden swedish pimple with a minnow head tipped on it. consistently out-fishes my partners setup

spoons if they are slow double rig with 1/80TH jig on top.
A crappie day of fishing is better than a good day at work
