I don't have any first hand info, but even when it had been cold a couple weeks ago, the complaint was mushy edges.  We've had temps well above freezing for over a week (even in the Uinta Basin) so I doubt it's safe currently.  I'll check my sources and get some real info.
Regarding the bite...I've never been there when it hasn't been good; particularly earlier in the season.
We just need some safe ice on it now.

I feel like I jinxed it... there were reports of good ice about 2 weeks ago, then I got my license... and it's been down hill ever since.

Here's to hoping for some cold weather in the forecast.

I fished Pelican on Friday the 21nd.  Unbelievable!  I took my younger brother out with me and we had a great time.  He's from WA and I'm in CO.  So this was the maiden voyage.  I dropped the camera in and at 4' the screen had 2 dozen fish.  I lowered to the floor (11') and the entire column was full of blue gill.  We caught our limit in under 1.5 hours and that was being selective on size.  Truely is a world class fishery!

Generally speaking by this time of the year the bite has slowed considerably.  This year seems to be a bit different with the bite holding fairly steady, at least on the east side.  Lots of ice though; unconfirmed reports of 30" or more.  Think 'shallow' is what I've been told.
