Anyone ever refill 1lb propane bottles.
« on: Feb 05, 2007, 10:52 AM »
I see where Cabela's offers an adapter to refill small propane bottles.
I wanted to know if anyone has tried and the results?

Thanks

I have found that it's best to stick with relatively new "empties" or bottles that have been repeatedly refilled without showing any problems.  I tried to refill some empties that had been sitting my my garage for at least three years and found that the rubber doo-hickey that creates the seal had rotted/dried out and leaked.  Also, I found that rarely would a 1 lb bottle refill completely....always seemed to get it 2/3 or 3/4 full, even when following the directions that came with the refill adapter.  It still beats buyin' them new, though.

I agree that they don't completely refill, but it sure is cheaper to pay $10 to fill the old BBQ bottle and refill the little guys.

You should only fill them 3/4 of the way.

The 1-pound cylinders make excellant targets. Especially the ones that are not completely empty. You definately know when your rifle is zeroed in when you pop one of these at 100 yards.

Do you need tracer rounds to get the proper effect?   ::)

I haven't tried that yet. But I have thought about it. Mostly when you hit one with a regular round, it's just a whitish spray that jets out and launches it up in the air. ;D

the newer your bottles are the better.  no they dont completely refill but thats ok for the most part, just that they dont seem to put in enough pressure and they dont work very well in my little buddy heater.  Ive used coleman bottles for best results.  some of the cheaper made bottles dont work wortha crap.

Fishing should be the exercise of your skills- and its rewards the places it brings you to

Remember it is illegal in most states to transport a refilled container.
Now who would check, who would know, whats the fine?????

I got the same coupler out of Cabela`s about 6 yrs. ago and it works fine for me . I refill them all the time with no problems. you just don`t want to refill them more than 3-4 times each or they will start to leak. i put a drop of wd - 40 in the valve after filled to prevent rust on the valve. After refilling put in a sink or bucket full of water to test for leaks. you also have to refill from a FULL tank so the pressure as enough to fill it full

Reminder to check and make sure that the refilled bottle has a good seal on it.  I've refilled some that would leak gas.  I just screwed whatever I was using the bottles for on and used the regulator to prevent leaks.   I use them for my heater in the winter and the portable BBQ in the camper for summer.

Personally, I'd rather pay $2.29 and buy new ones.

I usually do just buy new ones, but when they cost $8.00 plus a piece at campground stores, I find that the refill adapter is worth having rather than spending $16 for a two pack.

chilling them in the freezer before filling them works well to prevent leaks.

Just remember do not try to fill them in your basement where there are any open flames such as water heater or a furness, and there's always a little that leaks out and you don't want that rotten smell.

While it may not make sense it is actually a good law. If refilled improperly you've just created a 1lb bomb with no idea if or when it may go off. Its just about impossible to prove its been refilled though unless you have all the equiptment to do so right next to the bottles in question.
