Sz 4 mustad bait keeper snelled hook with a 2.5-3" minnow hooked in the back behind the dorsal.  Small splitshot 12-16" above the bait.  Set it just above the weeds,  so minnow is swimming around trying to swim into weeds.

Pretty much if there is a pickeral  around they'll hit it.

The snelled hook has line already attached, hence. It's called snelled.  They come in the packs of like 6-10,  they are more than strong enough for pickeral.

Their teeth aren't what a pike is.  Most the snells are made with a 15-20lb mono which is more than enough for say a 3lb pickeral.  Besides they are cheap so if they look worn change them.  You can get them snelled in coated wire too. When you by them look at the lb test rating for the Snell.      My son caught a 30" pickeral last year on a sz8 hook and a 1.5" fathead minnow as we were set up for brook trout.

Nope if they're hungry they bite a lead sounder.  I know bc it happens a lot as I sound holes.

Med. shinners in or close to weeds. Shallow water.  Usually 8 ft or less deep. Just barley enough split shot to keep bait from swimming all over the place. And that's it. There easy to catch. Get yourself pair of jaw spreaders for hook removals. Makes things easier.

I use medium minnows on a number 6 hook, 10 pound Spider Wire Braided line for a leader with one split shot about a foot up from the hook, and attached to 30 pound braided line with a barrel swivel.

Iced and released a 18"er yesterday. In about a foot of water with a 2 1/2" shinner. I also had a 6# test mono leader. I always set a tip up or 2 tight to the shore.

Grab them behind the head, long pair of needle nose pliers if its in the throat.  Just grab aholt of them like you mean it. don't be scared, b/c they can sense fear thats when they strike.

I use a 20lb floro leader about 18" with a red treble and few small beads and a Colorado blade. With the blade and a shiner you don't need any split shot. I leave my leaders on a piece of dense styrofoam with the hooks hooked in one edge and a roofing nail tacked through the swivel on the other to keep them straight until I get to the lake and set them. The heavier floro has a lot of memory and will stay coiled if stored rolled on the tip up spool.
