« on: Jan 17, 2013, 10:24 AM »
been fishing for bluegill on camera....some big ones would come in, but would not bite

I've tried lots of colors. lmao...lots
They are being very very finicky (might have spelled that wrong)
What jig do you use on very finicky gills???  color/size

That's common for the bigger gills. Try bigger jigs, I have had luck with forage fry jigs. also ice flys,, time of day can make a difference also. the smallest diamond and gill pills too.
Use very light line, go as light as you dare. (2lb) Keep at it they will bite.

As mentioned above, go light; line and jig size. A tiny Wolfram with one spike used to be my go to. Try florocarbon if you're not using it already. A variety of plastics and different jigging cadences. Try fishing late afternoon into dark.  Also you could try a dead stick as well.

Ultra small jig, #16-#20, micro plastic or single spike, 2# flouro maximum with 1# even better and as dead a stick presentation as you've ever done, don't even let the wind breathe on your line. OR, outrageously large, along the lines of #2 or #3 sized Jiggin Raps, Darters types. Might be surprised but often bull 'gills act more like a Crappie than an average sized 'gill

man....could never imagine using a 16 or 20 hook.....not for one fish...when we are sight fishing gills and the bigger fish are interested but not whacking we switch up....one inch tubes, curly tails, shake the snot out of it and then let it sit....nine out of ten..whack....
It's all about Karma.....

I either use a #12 diamond jig with one maggot, or switch to a vertical presentation. A #10 or #12 demon spoon tipped with a maggot or two, deadstick, normally does the job. If that doesn't work, a small banana jig.

when i can't get gills to bite, i'll downsize. if they still won't bite, i'll upsize.
i usually start with a rat finkee, a diamond jig, or one of several jigs from jammin jigs, then i'll go to a gill pill or a nuclear ant, and then i'll go up to a forage minnow spoon or a swedish pimple

My favorite jig in this situation is a half stick of TNT...haha..ok, serious now..., if the gills wont bite i usually give up and find something that will....but lindy toad jigs with 2 or 3 spikes seems to provide consistent action for me.

if you have a flasher...jig the bigger fish up..ive found they will come racing to your bait..jig,jig,jig,.....sit...they sometimes wont touch anything that moves...that includes holding your pole in your hand...ive had fish under me that absolutely would not bite unless i set my pole down....sometimes...it s just the opposite..bluegill are curious...so switch that bait up...sometimes can only catch them switching jigs every 5 minutes...good luck..hope it helps.
i just know they will bite if i stay another hour.

i wouldnt think a different bobber will help make them bite.however...ive had success with putting two jigs on...one up about 10 inches from the bottom jig.

Most likey not, but a spring boober will change the action you get from the jig.
