Found a good spot for gills last year and was not disappointed the first time out this year. I caught them on hali and wax worm

Nice fish, the true bulls are hard to come by this year.I've been getting a few giants every trip and just piles of crappies.I fish yesterday end up with 41 fish,11 gills over 8 1/2 and 30  crappies in the 10 inch range.

Judging by the warpaint on some of those fish a couple might be pumpkinseeds- pumpkinseed/bluegill hybrids? Taste every bit as good as 'gills. Good eating.

Here's a nice Pumpkinseed I caught yesterday. We had a great day on a lake where the fish don't usually bite when it's sunny. (and it was) I kept six gills and seeds and a perch, since I only like to have enough for a couple meals. Also, I had three nice crappie from the day before. (overnight trip) Also caught gill seed hybrids, though they tended to not have the red "ear". The best part was releasing several bigger seeds and gills for the future. This one is about 8.25''.

Out today on a smallish, private lake. (7-3PM) No water deeper than 7' yet it holds some awesome gills and crappie, though they are really tough to find. I fished it early in the season, but with no snow cover, I struggled to ice a handfull of nice fish, one was 9 and 5/8". Today I put the odds in my favor; the lake is covered with slush and snow, and a low pressure system is coming in. Had one of my best days on good sized gills. Small horizontal jig and wax worm on 2# floro was king, though I took a couple on bare plastic as well. I kept seven just under, to a bit over nine", and released several that were bigger than the ones I kept. I was looking for a 10 (released one there last year), but my best went 9.5'', and was released. Also got a couple nice seeds, which I let go. Sorry I didn't photo them. :(
Here's most of them; bear in mind they weren't the biggest:

This one went back, note the custumized St. Croix

Another variation, also returned

Take home minus a matching ten in. perch:
