Wire rod holders
« on: Dec 14, 2013, 07:18 PM »
I have purchased a couple different brands of the cheaper color coated wire rod holders and they are all too big.  None of the rod handles are long enough.   What mods have been done to make these work?

not sure what you mean the handle is too short
if the but of the handle does not extend into the rod holder?

you might give these a go. i picked one up from the sponsor site

With the wire style rod holders when you slip the rod into holder the handle length isn't long enough to rest in the back portion before the front hit the reel

You mean the second link he has don't you? I use those also and some of my rods just barely catch in the back portion.

I typically pan fish and couple rods are close to touching back but that's it.  Didn't know if anyone has had an extension to the back.

the middle link i posted will hold any rod. youcan make it or buy it and modify it for you needs.
if you don't find some thing you like, then maybe make one out of pvc pipe
lots of threads on here about it

I've bent the front U-shaped rest towards the back for rods that barely catch.  If you need more than that you could probably bend the main arm up to shorten the distance between the 2 ends.

I use this one. Any rod I have long of short will fit. You can adjust the uprights inward if you need to. AND it folds flat!
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the ice looking like an idiot.

Have  any of you seen/tried this "screw-in" type.  Notice : with a left hand crank handle, rotate counter-clockwise to lock the rod in place with the handle/crank behind the up-turned hook.   Diameter for rod grip is 1 1/4".

Thanks. Yeah I got tired of trying to wedge them in just right only to have them fall out. So I was looking at my kayak crate which use to have just the pvc rod holders before I put a store bought one on it and had an AHA! moment. So I have a couple of really nice ice rod holders that cost me about 3$ each. They are the perfect hieght while sitting in the shanty to reach for, don't have to worry about them falling out randomly and easy in and out for the rod.
