actually you can pull them up off the bottom about 4 feet once you get the school in the feeding mode but you mostly want to fish close to the bottom until you get them going.I like to use sweedish pimples with maggots an old timer told me to use little red worms they work better on the pimple.
I like to use the pimples because i still get walleye on them, the rapalas just dont work for the white perch in my experiance with them.the little forage spoons work the best but i have never got a walleye on one so i stck to the pimples.

Ugh, those DAMN thimgs!! Here in NY when I fish the Hudson River in the summer you can't get away from them! If a school finds you're in the "feeding" mood, you'll get them hand over fist.

They look like big minnows and they taste that way in the summer.  Maybe the cold water will make them better.

Those first fish were white perch, but that last one was a white bass. You can tell by all the stripes and different head shape.  ;)

We have white perch in Erie, but I've never got one big enough to keep. I've heard they're decent table fare.

Up in my neck of the woods, them thar are White Perch, and thar good eat'in.
They are fun to catch, both on hard and soft water, and they put up a decent fight.
Anything over a foot is a pig!  Great fish.  Thanks for sharing.  I'd be sharing pics of
last weekends catch if I had remembered to take the camera memory card out of the
computer and put it back in the camera!  Doh!  Very dissappointing getting on the ice wanting
to take a picture and then have "No Memory Card" on the display.

wow those are nice ones!!!I cant believe how different they taste in the winter compared to the summer.
If you guys havent tried it yet you should smoke them soke them in the same brine you would a salmon or trout.Just cut the head off ,gut them and throw them in the brine for 24 hours then smoke them.Really awsome!!!
