We were fishing a relatively isolated part of the lake, access to it is nonexistant...the wardens focus their rounds on the heavily fished areas near public access.

It isn't illegal to catch bass, only to target or possess them. **censored**?

I would have one hell of a time convincing a pissed off warden I was fishing for walleye instead of bass, as their habitats differ very little. I could if I had to...but we were careful...

That walleye came from 50 feet of water??  What's he doing that deep this time of year?  Was he 50 feet down over a deeper depth or were you on bottom?

???

We were catching most of these Smallmouths in about 25 feet of water, on a rocky bottomed dropoff, with medium sized minnows, we always find bronzebacks in the same general area on that lake as walleye, eating simliar foods.

The hole we got him out of was drilled about 30 from shore, the depth was surprising, and he was right on the bottom. The water where we normally catch eyes there were full of smallmouth.

The walleye books I have claim that the deep basin or deepest structure availible is prime for late fall and early ice action...now what the books say and what I have found are not always similar...

Nice pics. You found the smallies wintering hole. Many years ago I used to fish the Snake all winter for eyes and there was a small section there that held piles of bass. I had to move my tip-ups from that spot, otherwise I'd run out of bait.

Hit Saratoga again this pm, from 3pm to 7...kinda slow, missed alot of what I think was walleye flags.

Ended up with one perch on a tipup, 3 smallmouth between 14-16 inches, and a nice 23" eye!

Beautiful night, saw a couple shooting stars while I was trying to avoid getting run over by snowmobilers.... ::)

Perch-

Fat eye-
