fishing on canadarago lake today 3 good inches of ice. just becareful around inlets. fishing in front of hyder creek.

saw 3 portables in front of bakers beach, 1 in front of the boat launch, 2 and myself in front of hyder creek. didnt use tip-ups today, only jig caught my limit of perch in 2.5 hours, some nice jacks.

Good to hear. I fished the other side of the lake saturday and there was 2" or less anywheres past 30 ft. from shore. Maybe I'll have to his the west side.

All you can see from Rt. 28 is people fishing. You can't see people catching their limit...you usually see people here and there and you don't know how they are doing. There are places where people have good success and places where they do not...but posting exactly where there is a prime spot for catching jack perch is not a good idea for a place like Cando.

not that big of a deal. just because there were fish were caught in that spot today doesn"t mean they will be there tomorrow.

For sure by the weekend you will see many little villages pop up on the lake , can't wait to hit my spot south of Canadarago , you'll have to ask my fishing buddy where it is i'm forgetful !! BE CAREFUL OUT THERE .

sunday was definitely not very safe, although nearer to shore was doable. I still do not recommend widespread travel on cando, if you do pay attention to the signs of weaker ice around spring, rockpiles, etc. I'll be out there tomorrow and will provide a detailed report.
as for the debate about the OP giving away too much info, I can see both sides. On some weekends, especially those where other lakes are not available to fish, there can be well over a hundred guys on the west side of the lake. If each of them takes home 50 of the lakes biggest perch, that will decimate the population of any lake. How long does it take to grow a 12" perch? More than a year or two I'd bet. We should all remember to be responsible anglers as best as each sees fit, I'll leave it at that.
On the other hand, Kudos to you for encouraging and helping out your fellow anglers, that is what this site is all about. You will all hear about my success or failure on wednesday!

Well there you go! I'm almost strictly C&R so I don't pay much attention to numbers. I've been called arrogant when I say that "If I kept every fish I've caught (out of Cando) the lake would have been empty years ago!" but joking aside, there's a good point to that.

my source said 2.5"-3" and extremely variable ice. surprised no one is out there on plywood sheets like some years.

I was one of those guys, along with BIGJIM223. Had a good day, although much slow time, but darn if that sun wasn't feelin good! Ice was 3-4" of softish ice, may times the spud went through on the first hit. But we all stayed dry so... Perch bite picked up at sunset.

Seriously, it was a great day out there. The ice was a bit thin for me, but nobody got wet! Some nice perch were caught along with the usual dinks. It was good to get out and wet a line again!

Flanny was there with us settin up for 'eyes. Didnt seem like he got any. I'll be out on the east side sat sun and mon, you're welcome to check it out. Biggest perch on wed was exactly 12" and .93 lbs, and was swelled up like a behemoth. made the 10" perch look like shiners.

I'll bet there aint much ice left now after 24 hours of rain and temps just below 40 degree's. All I have to say you guys are nuts for even fishing that place with 3" of ice. More power to you.

It's not for everyone. but to me 3" is plenty of ice if you know the lake. I'm on that lake 200 days each year, so I have a pretty good idea when + where's safe. On conditions like that, I'm not running all over the lake, just sticking to the bays I know are solid. I'll be out there first thing tomorrow morn, hope there's not too much slush on the ice.

Nice job, where'd you fish? I was on the east side, north of the island today. 4-5" of hard clear ice, with another 2" of frozen slush ice on top of that, all very hard. Will have my sled out there this weekend. Put over 100 perch on the ice, with many in the 8-9" range, several over 10. Also had two pickerel, a fat 18"+13". All in all, despite the gusty NW wind, a great day. Will be out tomorrow braving the cold!

i believe it i was out checking the ice a week and a half ago and there were people fishing over 2 inches of ice i walked out a couple hundred yards behind the lakehouse......which part is considered the back side?

BigZin, I was one of those crazies. I fish about a mile south of the lake house. Been there all my life, never really called any part of it the back side, but if I were to, it'd be the far south end. Maybe someone else would call the back side the east side, since its the opposite side from the boat launch/bakers beach?

You can park at the boat launch, which is on the west side of the lake, on rt 28. There is decent fishing right off of that, in weeds in 5-15 ft then the deep basin in 35 ft which I never found productive. South of the boat launch ( 1/2 mi by ice) is hyder creek and a very productive point. Bakers Beach is located on 28 also, about 1 mile north of the launch. From there it is a 1/4 mi walk straight out to the sunken island, which is about 5 ft. deep surrounded by a steep dropping 35 ft. Good spot. Across the lake, you can gain access by parking across from the lake house walking between lake properties. Also, a mile past that is Walnut Grove Rd., a seasonal road that people park at and walk down to the lake between camps. The lake has a lot of fish, but gets devastating pressure, so, not to preach, but I encourage C+R/moderate keep rates whenever I can.

i am more of a sport fisherman i keep some but throw back most if i get a good one ill keep it but other than that i enjoy the sport....thanks for your help its much appreciated!!

I live about 25 minutes from the lake and right now we are sitting at 9 below zero. So I bet good ice is being made on the lake today.

Oh ya plenty cold. I'm waiting till about 11 to go out, the sun'll be in the south sky then and the middle of the lake will warm up enough to fish comfortably.

I'm coming up to visit some friends I love hard water fishing I live near Pittsburgh Pa. Would love to try this lake when I come up bringing my jigging rods and tip ups.. I have a NY licenses for my 1st time ..hope to make more trips if it is as good as they tell me would like some help on where to fish. Some are probably just looking for the fastest, most up-to-date information so that they can go catch their limit or more, without actually having to put any effort into finding a spot.

System-- Thanks for the great post. I live in Albany and fished Candarago a few times over the last three years with various success. Year before last nice perch near sunken island, last year the perch class was pitiful in size not numbers-- Glad to see the ones you got into so far this year are decent. Would like to fined Wally as well as perch. When you say the point by Hyder Creek is it better to set up on hte inside by the cove or closer to the main body. Spoke wiht a guy from the lake association (Pete Komanderek) over the summer and he said near the buoys in front of the cove-- same for winter?

I started ice fishing Can when I first moved into the area, more than 30 years ago. Back then the YP fishing was all dinks, 2 at a time, as fast as you could get your line down. Hardly anyone else out there then. Slowly over the years the average size of the perch started to increase. Maybe it was the tiger muskies thinning out the population. Anyway, by the mid 90's you could catch a mess of respectable fish and have alot of fun. Then the commercial guys moved in, carting away buckets of fish every day. Down went the quality of the YP fishing. Alot has changed over the years, esp. the ice fishing pressure. The DEC noted that pressure and decreased the daily limit from the statewide standard of 50 down to 25 fish.
I've had years of fun panfishing on Can, both on the ice and in a boat. I love the lake and I'm sure alot of you feel the same way. We're not talking about Oneida Lake or the St. Lawrence River Bays. Its a relatively small lake and there's no question it can be impacted by fishing pressure. The school of thought used to be that you can not fish down a panfish population because they're so prolific but that has since been disproven by many scientific studies. That is why the state instituted a statewide and sometimes waterbody specific daily limit, and in the case of crappies, a minimum size, too.
Everyone wants to see good fishing quality maintained on Canadarago. It is my belief that in order to do that we all need to practice some discretion on the harvest of mature YP. From the previous posts it sounds like several of you guys feel the same way. If we can get more people to jump on the bandwagon lots of people can participate and not negatively effect the fishery.

I have owened property on Canadarago for 25 yrs and i have to agree with Floatman . I can remember years back when large groups would form a line for several yards and if one area of the line got into a school the rest of the guys would pull up and form a circle around them and put a hurting on the school . You would actually see filleted perch piled up on the ice which went unnoticed by the DEC and shortly thereafter the limits were changed . I think we should be able to fish and enjoy ourselves but we have to be selective and use common sense so our fishery will be there for future generations to enjoy . I also love this lake and enjoy taking the grandkids out and watching them have a good time .

I to agree with float man ,and perchchopper i live quite a long ways from cando ,and have been going there for many many yrs4-5 time a year just to fish some place different , and noticed that the fishing pressure is without a doubt more than this lake can handle, your lake is very nice and clean ,and the fishing pressure has increased tremendously ,due to the internet ,sometimes progress isn't always a good thing just an olbuzzards .02

Outstanding day on Cando. 5-6" of great ice everywhere I went. Many guys out around the sunken island/bakers beach, some out by the island, and some in the deep channel. windchills were brutal! Perch bite where I was was HOT.
Floatman, my family has lived on cando for 4 generations and I must say that is the best post I have ever read. That lake is my families lifeblood and I'm so glad to hear other people respect it just as much as me.
Bigzin- I was out there from 11:30-5 and could not keep my jig line in the water for more than a minute or two the entire time! My father and I and BigJim223 put well over 150 perch on the ice, with the 90% over 8". None over 11" though. I will be out there all day monday, in a bay on the west side, just north of the island.
PeterC, Glad to help a fellow fisherman. Hard to say where on that point they'll be...a lot depends on traffic and wind (which does affect fish even under ice). I'd work the southern edges of the point/bouy line. Don't be afraid to set some tipups shallow as I often see walleye while I'm fishing for perch in 6-10ft. Check the ice often as there is a lot of current there.
GWarner - good luck out there - there's a lot of info on this site, take your time and use it to develop the best plan you can before you go out there!
Perch, Fillet, Float, I am SO reassured to hear there are actually some fisherman on Cando who understand the importance of selective harvest. I know a lot of guys who rip every fish they can out of that lake as often as they can, they just don't understand how that devastates the lake. This year the average size of the perch class is way up from prevoius years, and next year, if most of the guys fish it as smart as you, will be stellar..

Good post!^^^^^^ And he is not kidding, in the hour and a half I was there, at least a hundred perch were caught and released! The trick was NOT catching the dinks, and going for the mature fish which just were not as aggressive and stayed down on the bottom. You just had to get them chasing and they were caught! I will be out on Monday to give it a go from the Kenai. It will be warmer tomorrow. No heater needed- except to cook lunch!

Can't beat the action we had. very few fish smaller than 7-8", but I would have traded dozens of them for some perch up at the 12"+ range. Got only 3-4 at 11, the biggest of which had been swimming under my shanty all day snobbing my bait till my father finally tricked it t the last minute. Very fun day. come on up tomorrow! I'm a mile (on the road) past the lake house

it would be hard finding someone in a blue flipover considering there were at least 20 of them out there today. didnt see to many people catching fish. we kept a few nice perch and put put a few smaller ones back. wasnt to impressed compared to how we made out on lake pleasant yesterday

I have only fished 'Darago a few times. I was fortunate enough to experience some great YP fishing. C&R is 95% of my fishing.
If I didn't eat breakfast, I keep at least a dozen ;D

Never fished with i finder till acouple yrs ago, but decided to get my vexlar and i like it. Dont want to say its the best as ive only had this one so what i can say is it works great for me it was simple to use for a newbie to finders and ive had no trouble with it. Guess it will come down to how much u want to spend and the reviews u read. Gd luck on ur choice

Brutal wind on Cando today. Fished with a local Murderer's row of excellent fishermen and had little to show for it due to steady 10-15mph winds with gusts of 25. Wind actually took my Shappell four man shanty with two guys and gear in it for a ride down the lake - with lines and cameras in the water and everything. Local Legend Flanny lost a BIG walleye at the hole, my dad got one 11" fattie and two dozen midsize perch, and the rest of us got dinks and windchill. Still better than sittin on the couch! There were a dozen cars at Bakers Beach, 4-5 shanties each on the north and south ends, anyone else have a report?

Go to Marcum web site they have great videos on how to use and you you can also read the manual there before you get it. I ordered mine last monday and had it Thursday. Fished with it Saterday.

Yea he was with me, did a lil scouting for eyes. Fished it a bunch in the summer and tried a spot from that. Id say 3" black n 2" white ice just eyeballin it.

I have a lx1, you wont be disappointed. Buddy fishes with a vex fl8. Both work great. His a little brighter. Mine a lil quieter. They all work well.

Was on Candro yesterday and had fun with the perch. The ice was 6 inches but the wind was brutal. As you can see by the look on his face my son had a blast. Anyone gettin any Eyes though? Hoping to fish again this weekend

Was on Canadarago today. Probably 5 inches of ice, but open areas on the boat launch ramp. Caught plenty of perch, but almost all "dinks".

We were out there too. Looked awfully bleak when we got there at daybreak, nobody else around and no tracks on the ice. Boatlaunch looked pretty bad with broken up ice in the launch...decided to drill a few holes to see how the ice was. 5in. of good ice evrywhere we tried. Caught fish in every hole we drilled, unfortunately there wasn't a keeper anywhere. Fished from 10ft to 41ft with exactly the same results.......dinks.

I been there a few seasons ago with my fishing buddy and we did that too for two day weekend.Still too many dinks and i can't see the walleye is any better too. thanks for the report and remember to be careful on that ice

Monday was tough on Cando due to that wind, I'll keep everyone updated on the ice after this little batch of rain we're getting.

My side (east) of Cando has 4" of good ice still with 2" slush on top. Still very fishable to me.
Baitshops: 4Sesons bait is my recommendation, its run by an old time lake fisherman, Joe, who is THE MOST up to date source for local lake info. On the west side of the lake, across from the boat launch to either the north or south, you will see signs for 4S bait and tackle, just up the hill. He sells shiners, toughies/fatheads, spikes, mousies, and full range of tackle.
Past Richfield on 20E is Tom&Kellys Gas station which has an extensive live bait system using local creek water int heir basement, which produces very lively minnows. they also have spikes and worms.
Brads in Schuyler lake has bait but their supply is much more "hit or miss" in my experience.

Ice was very good today! 7-8 inches where I was. Very, very slippery, creepers are a MUST! Wish I had mine today, "System"! Very windy (17mph) and cold, blowing snow after 4PM. Went out at 1:30, drilled 4 holes (2 guys) and never moved for the rest of the day. Caught a bunch of perch, all jigged, my buddy kept 7 nice ones, best being 12" or so.
Saw bass, waldo's, perch, crappie, and a swarm of alewives (I presume) on the camera today. Nothing but the perch showed any interest whatsoever! The perch were VERY aggressive, though!

Bah, The bay to the north of bakers is a huge shallow sand flat that should still have green angelhair on the bottom, I'd work there as most perch seem to be feeding on bugs.

I've never fished the ice there, but I know there is a great standing weedbed in 10fow that separates the mud shallows and a 20' dropoff.....sounds fishy to me

It was today! And small teardrops were the best baits today, though I did catch 'em on small Buckshots and Copper Pimples.

I never had luck ice fishing at night for perch ..even for walleye in lakes I caught them in the day on open water. But I only been ice fishing a few times at into the night and not all night.. perhaps these perch or walleye feed in the dark under the ice but , I have no night icefishing pics yet

I have stayed out in the shanty all night on a few occasions and never caught much at all, but that was on jig lines. I believe that, if you are going to pull the night shift, tip ups are the way to go.

Got out on the ice today on my home ice, just what the doctor ordered, and probably put 60 to 70 perch on the ice, didnt keep any as none were over 10 inches. For about 40 minutes straight it was non stop but all medium sized perch. This is just how it was last yr moxt days u cant find the jumbos, but know they are there so as theres no ice on Oneida u half to fish where theres ice, all in all it was agreat day, good seeing u today articicejigger even though u were blocks away lol

Looking to switch things up a bit with a friend and make the small trek tomorrow. Coming from the Caroga Lake area and I have no knowledge of this lake whatsoever. Can anyone tell me where there is both safe ice and a solid bite. You don't have to give away any secrets, I just don't want to take a wasted trip. Sounds like a good perch bite is on, but what about the eyes? Any action?

Head down the west side on rt 28 until you see the lake. There should be cars parked on the left in a place called Bakers Beach. Right on the water. Looking across the lake from there about 150-200 yards is a sunken island. Drops off all around to deeper water. The east side of the island goes to over 30'. South tapers off slowly. If you GOOGLE the lake and do a satillite view you can see the island. Make sure you have a flasher to mark the fish. You will catch many dinks but should find some nice keepers. Tomorrow and sunday look to be good days there depending on bite. Good Luck................

Boy the lake used to produce more hoggs than dinks...spent over 20 ice seasons on the lake with several very productive spots on the lake...i know guys are going to chime in and say we still catch hoggs...yes you probably do...but i am not going to wade thru 50 dinks to catch a couple of hoggs. Just my opinion though.

For someone whos fished this lake for over 40yrs ive seen it in the begining where it was just a typical lake then when i went in the service around 81 i remember coming back to a great lake then commercial fishing limit changes and the pressure has taken its toll on the lake. There r jumbo perch still there but it will never b the same again, like it was. I remember releasing 18 inch waldos because u knew u were going to catch bigger. Its ashame, thats why i started fishing Onedia for the first time. Its fun to catch alot of fish but as someone who loves to eat them its kinda of counter productive to fish on Cando anymore. If Oneida or Otsego was froze id b there and its just ashame to live here and really not want to fish it. Just my opinion

10 to one is going to b agood day on cando, depends on what u want to keep. like i said yesterday i caught between 60 and 70n perch and didnt keep a one, going to go out thursday i think and hit some of my waldo spots with articicejigger, better to maybe catch some waldos then fish for dinks

Everybody and their mother on Cando today! I'd say over 100 guys in every possible location on the lake - north end, south end, hyder, sunken island, deep channel, all over. Hope some of them were selective harvest/C&R. Had over 300 perch today between me, BigJim and Dad, out of them, 4 were over 11", one a 12 1/2 fattie, WHICH WENT BACK TO BREED. Lots of ice. Lots of action. few biggies. I believe oxygen levels are changing with the increased ice and snow cover, although I am still fishing over good green weeds. Damp and cold snow made for real hard pulling of sleds and shantys. Will try to expand my horizons tomorrow....

Also, there is no doubt about the changing fish patterns on Cando, but I blame that completely on angler catch/release rates, although there is no statistical data to back that up. Do you remember 200 guys ice fishing Cando in the 70s and 80s?

I think Kowboyup pretty much sums it up , there are some jumbos in the lake but it will never be like it was years past.C&R would definitely be a start but i'm willing to bet with all the people that are out fishing and many having traveled from long distances that there are a lot on perch leaving the lake that would have been in the 11-12'' class by next year . There's not much that can be said as they have every right to keep 25 perch , our only hope is that more guys are like the System and maybe take a few for the table but also just go out and have fun . I remember years ago when a 30'' walleye was caught in front of Bakers beach by a local guy , that we will probably never see again , i hope i'm wrong .

Remember fishing in the early 80's as a kid, many dinks everywhere.
Remember late 80's when you could drop a three lure rig and get doubles and triples of average size perch. During this time I remember looking up the lake at the expansion crack that would usually run across the the lake from below the boat launch across to the island and see many fisherman near the 100's ( on years when oneida wasn't froze or on an off year.)
Remember the early 90's when you had to SEARCH, and many times the finder(or flasher) was blank at every hole, until you had a black out of huge jumbo hoggers that were fed primarily on Daphnia Pulex species or applesauce as we called it.
Remember the mid 90's when we were on the east side hammering hoggers by the buckets if you wanted.
Then came the Zebra's that dented the daphnia population
Then came the limit restriction ( which I agreed with), cause before it, Cando was the commercial place due to their size. It was were guys got their biggest bang per buck when oneida was off(ask any tenured person still working at Marion Manor on Oneida).
Then came alot of early spring thaws that ice went out too early and the late ice slaughter didn't happen.
From this came many major year classes of perch
Then came the alewife that shifted walleye predation. Not saying YOY perch still aren't tasty to the eyes, but Alewife are like candy.
Alot of change here.......I feel from my knowledge and study of fisheries that theres a boom in perch population as we saw in the early 80's, and not enough predation from both man and fish together to get the numbers down so they can grow larger.
The Jumbos may not be in the quantity they once were, but they are still there. Anyone who sight fishes knows this. A big school comes in, you see some jumbos but you also see a ton of little ones that attack your lure first before a jumbo can get it.
catching fish of small size at every hole you drill isn't a sign that you have too much human predation in you'r fishery, it's a sign that you don't have enough.
too many fish + same or decreasing forage base+ lack of balanced predation (Man/Fish) = reduction in growth rates or stunting.
in my mind this is a piece of the cando puzzle right now.

LYK2Fish- Agree with much of what you have to say. First zebra mussels, then alewives have changed the dynamics of Canadarago. A 25 perch limit
was late in coming, but at least it is now in place. I don't think though that fishing pressure is causing the reduction in large perch, I agree with
you that lack of predation on small perch has caused an explosion in the perch population and therefore you have 100 "dinks" to every jumbo
perch. I certainly don't know what the answer to solving the problem is, but I'll relate what I think is an interesting comparison. I sometimes fly
into a lake in Canada to fish for walleyes and northerns. The lake gets very little fishing pressure. The problem there is you need to catch 10
"dink" walleyes to get one keeper. Again there is not enough natural predation on the walleyes, though the northerns eat some. It's also interesting
that on this lake there are hardly any perch, catching one is very rare. I guess there are plenty of predators for the perch. I still love to fish on
Canadarago, both summer and winter, but I wish there was some way to get the lake back in "balance".

lyk2fsh - great post that was really informative and well explained! You clearly know what you're talking about. I agree with everything you said, and boy have I seen the lake change due to first, those darn zebra mussles, and more recently those darn alewives. The biggest fish in the lake do not have to feed as often as they used to, due to the ever present alewive buffet.
AIJ- I look forward to some fishing trips - I've got a lot of time off coming, I'll take some then.

Of the pile of fish we caught yesterday, I kept 4 medium (9-11") for a perch dinner last night. The biggest, maybe 11" was a male with nothing in it's belly. The other 3 were females and they were stuffed full of 1" alewives. Surprised that they would even hit a jig as full as they were! At times yesterday there were an estimated 100 fish on my video screen all rushing for my teardrop jig as it went down. All were dinks. At one point I caught 9 fish in a row as fast as I put the jig back down there. I stopped re-baiting it as they would hit the bare jig as well as the baited one. It became a game to try and keep it away from them, so that I didn't have to unhook them. Good to have fast fishing, but I would trade 10 of those 5" fish for one 12-13" fish that I would release anyway.
I had a school of alewives go through my camera view again yesterday, and saw perch snapping them up as they went through. Also saw a very nice walleye go cruising though my view, was not even interested in my offering.
I agree with the poster above, not enough predators eating first year perch, as the alewives are so abundant. Where are the pickerel that were always so abundant? With schools of a hundred perch congregated around my jig, would you not think that pickerel would be there too gorging themselves? They are probably full of alewives also, I'm sure.

as I said in the otsego post a while back, Alewife are an awesome bait. think about it, they become abundant in short order, they offer more caloric energy than daphnia or scud, they have no spines, and fish love em. I have watched this happen in the finger lakes and it makes big fish.
Maybe time to go back to a #3 nickel pimple, castmaster, holograph bullet spoon, or do-jigger

I moved off of my busy perch grounds today to look for 'eyes in deeper water around the island. Not very successful at that, had 15 tip ups out, only 3 hits, 2 perch, and one VERY heavy fish 30 ft down that broke/cut my green ice line! Darn! Ended up with some good perch anyways, 5-6 10" and Dad got one 12'+ slob, all still swimming. Many people out on the lake today, more dog walkers and skiers than fishermen! Lots of guys around the Hyder and Sunken in the AM but almost all left by 2...must have been slow fishing. In sad news, the Fattie that I posted about releasing yesterday met her untimely end at the hands of my neighbor today...I feel bad, but I gave her the warning last night and she didn't listen! Good eats buddy!

One of the biggest predators of young of the year perch is adult perch. Wonder if maybe the numbers of adults has been reduced? Shouldn't the alewives be feeding on the perch fry like they do walleye fry?

just use lures that resemble a small alewive, like a small chrome kastmaster or swedish pimple and it the bait are showing on your finder , jig and keep jigging. Some lks. Ifish have so many alewive , it is possible to snag them random jigging under the ice if you see them just below the hole. Another good sign for a lot of alewive bait below is when you do land a fish, they spit them out,, giving you a size to match the hatch sortta speak

They also cause a thiamine deficiency in some fish, specifically salmonids, which hinders their natural reproduction and can cause early mortality. Sure, the fish usually grow fast while eating alewives, but they die younger and can no longer support populations in many places! They have profound effects even in the Great Lakes.

Considering that many species in Canadarago Lake are not native (alewife, carp, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, zebra mussels), I would say that the impact on native species is pretty high.

Ward told me 7" with an inch of water on top. Very slippery! Below freezing here now, 29 degrees, my side walk is as slippery as the lake! The ice should be fine, I would think.

Did some fishing on the lake yesterday ice was Good had some water on it need ice cleats..have to watch old holes water and wind cut like a drain hole on Monday 6 in holes were 12 in holes in 24 hrs. Nice lake to fish came up from PA. Need cold weather or ice may get Unsafe safe even with 5 in of clear ice wind and water on top will cut more than you think be safe and tight lines.

Fished yesterday the 24th. Caught a lot of dinks and a few 10" plus perch. Measured 8" of ice just before leaving at 4 pm.

walked out this afternoon saw 6" of solid glare ice. cold ,damp, and windy. some spots showed a thin layer of water under about 1" of ice.

"good ice" had 2" of moving water on it - there were actually small waves blowing across the lake! very windy and damp - I'll be at the sportsman sow tomorrow instead of on the ice---sucks, but better than riding the couch!

:tipup: Be very careful out there , especially with the run off going into the lake and also watch for previously drilled holes , there were some 10'' holes by Bakers beach yesterday which are most likely larger today . Years ago my son went in up to his waist when the hole got covered with snow , not fun!!

Cando had 8 inches of ice every where I drilled today. There are some man-sized holes out there so watch out. I saw a series of what I presume to have started out as 10" holes drilled right next to each other. They are now 32-36 inches long by 16 inches wide. I certainly would not want to hit one with a wheeler! Other than those and obviously the creek mouths the ice was very good today. Also creepers are a must! The edges are a bit shaky, but we had no issues today.
Fishing report- We went on at the boat launch at 12:30, very crowded parking lot, Bakers Beach was packed, also.
Fishermen everywhere. We fished south until we got to Hyder Creek. First hole I hit 3 dinks right away, my buddy 0.
Worked our way south hitting 7'-22' of water, marked few fish. When we did they were sniffers not biters! Lost a couple light hits, Paul caught a couple here and there, I finally quit after 4:30, landed 5 dinks. On our way back to the launch, we hit the first holes I drilled, Paul immediately got a hit and lost the fish on a meal worm, dropped right back down and got slammed by a fat 11 incher that had a 3" minnow sticking out of it's mouth! He then caught 3 more decent fish and they shut off for us. All fish were released.
Overall a great day out there, though it got pretty windy for a while. Conditions were great, you just had to watch out getting on and off. The fish could have been more aggressive, but that is fishing! The other 4 guys we talked to said it was a tough bite for them also, one guy landed an 18" (I believe) smallmouth as a nice bonus!

I will. Plan on going out unless it is very windy. You would not believe the storm we just had here. It was unreal, very eerie. Definitely want to watch out for those eroded holes out there, especially now that we got that snow squall. They will not be frozen over, just dusted.

Hooked into a tiger last weekend, in 26FOW at the edge of a real steep point. Had some massive pulls, then cut the main ice line. Water all over the shore line around my place - at least 6 FEET of water before the ice starts! Makes it real hard to get the shanty out there.. went out this AM, quite a few guys out there, but came off due to real cold wind and couldn't get my shanty out! I saw guys getting on the lake at walnut grove rd, bakers beach, and the boat launch.
Fishing in general slowed way down, most guys getting 90% dinks, and very few walleyes reported. Butler hasn't been around, but Flanny did alright both times he was out!

went out 2day. fished east side of lake in middle of island. caught close to 70-80 perch and also seen a few real big fish swim by the hole. kept 10 perch between 9-12" and released the rest. seen some monster perch but couldnt get them to bite. fished mostly in 10' of water. about a foot of water on shore where we got on

I got on at bakers beach with no trouble .caught at least 100 fish but only 15 keepers -they weren,t very big either . ice was much more comfortable to walk on today.....very slippery yesterday good luck everyone and be careful, this will be another warm week

I posted fising suggestions two or three times earlier in this thread, just read through the whole thread and you'll get a real good idea of how the lake as been this year and where the bait shops are. The only new info that I will add is that at most of the access points have some water between shore and ice, some only a foot, some several feet, drive pas some of the access points (which are previously posted in this thread..) and see where guys are getting on.

went out this morning. fished the little backset to the north of bakers. caught lots of dinks but only 1 fish over 10". didnt even see any big ones on camera. ice was good. dont think the shore will be any good after 2maro. we were in the blue clam summit

Had a slow day on Cando today - fished east side, on the edge of a long point jigging in 6-8fow, tip ups off the break off in 15s and 25s. Caught very little in either place. Had 100s of small perch on the camera as well as some 10-11" but all were extremely wary - could not get a good aggressive bite on ANYTHING! A lot of tire kickers. did get about a 13-14" LMB up to the hole but lost him. Some guys in shallower than me had decent action on fat heads under tip ups but no perch over 10". Anybody else have an luck today? Lots of other guys out but most got tired of the cold wind by noon.

Me and the kowgirl had agood day on the ice today. put alot of fish thru the hole, but few keepers although we did get enough for a fish fry. Seemed like the bigger perch were suspended and when we reeled up to them they hit like freight trains. Did get one small walleye. Had 5 tipups out and didnt get aflag. didnt get exactly where i wanted to but going to try it tomarrow as ill b by myself and will move around alittle more. Toward the end we had alot of lookers, but all in all when they cameup from bottom they hit.

So went back to my home lake this morning with some friends. At 5pm i had to have caught 200 perch and i might have kept one if i was going to. R U kidding me. Nobody on the lake so drilled about 30 holes all over in places i wanted to check, out of them i may have not caught fish out of 2 of them. A couple holes i left because there was so many little ones. The screen at times was solid for 20 ft. At my last hole i stayed there for 3hrs and it was nonstop, figured like fishing forbrook trout weed thru the chubs and youll get the trout, but that didnt happen it was just dink after dink. I was out there from 3- 5:30 on the East side. Sat in about 8fow, had about 50 perch, several in the 8-10" range but none over 10. Heck of a nice afternoon wasn't it?

It is a fun place when conditions are right and you hit the big schools. they have to be in the lake for the proof is there are so many little ones. Again, wish gas wasn't so expensive, I'd do the four hr trip and stay over with this balmy weather if I hadn't a closer place that still interests me. I still have yet to catch any showoff fish pics ..you should enjoy it out there if and when the weather is warm. Sometimes that is when all the big humpies start showing up :o gl and hope you have fun up there.

I did hit 'em today! Actually stopped counting at 115 perch! The action was non-stop! I spent 2 1/2 hours just on 1 hole! True most were dinks, but there were some good fish to be had. It's all fun when you are catching lot's of fish! I brought home 7 very nice fatties, all others were released. Also got a 21" pickerel out of the same hole 5 minutes after I started fishing, on a #10 glow football jig/spike! Can't believe I got him through the hole on 4# test! I was sight fishing and did see some slammer perch mixed into the schools, but they just sniffed and kept on swimming. The 7 good ones I kept were full of 1" long bait fish, alevives from the look of them. I think the bigger slob perch are just filled right up with bait, so why hit a jig that looks a little fishy!
I used glow orange and glow green football jigs, size 8 and 10, tipped with spikes, Gulp spikes, or waxeys, didn't matter. Also 1" Blue Tiger Hali jigs tipped the same way, they all worked today! My fishin' buddy was hitting them using Mike's Orange Salmon Eggs, they worked OK, but I think the spikes were the ticket today. He got 25+ in about 1 1/2 hours.
Met Esoxman out there this morning, great finally meeting you! Hope you did well out there. too! "Flanny" didn't fish today, he was cutting firewood!
I will most likely be back out there again tomorrow sometime. Same area. Supposed to be a real nice day!

Had a pretty good afternoon on my Cando. Went in around 2:30 out at 6. Caught many perch and as usual, 90% were dinks. Towards dark I did have several real nice ones - not 14"'ers but solid 11's. Set tip ups with emerald shiners along an underwater finger that went from 24' up to 15', jigged at the crest over 8', then tip ups off the other side in the 25+. Really thought that would be a killer night time spot as it leads to shallow weeds water, but had no predators by dark. Some guys in the shallows were kept busy pulling 8" perch off of fat heads under tip ups. Colder than I expected with that sun, and windy! Will be out tomorrow night lookin for the nite time predator bite.

Good job system. Me and the gf went out today and we had to catch over 300 perch and we kept 8 and they were in the 10 inch range. Just pathetic i had tipups out and did manage 2 nice perch on them. We were double fisting them for hrs and just couldnt get any size to any of them. Did talk to aguy who fishes the lake ALOT antd he said hes heard of 1 waldo, r u kidding me. All in all though it was agreat day on the lake. I did take about aminute video of my gf pulling up fish as fast as she could put it down we watched it it ws pretty good

Fished west side north of boat launch this afternoon. Didn't get there till almost 3 and fished till dark. They started biting good at 4 and I ended up with 16 keepers ranging from 10 to 12". Must have thrown back at least double that in dinks. Had a good time and brought home supper ;D happy fishin'

My friend went to the lake yesterday and he did well..got his limit of 25 fish...bite was on .. Ice was good he had no trouble getting on the lake with out a plank...tight lines be safe..

Shore line at bakers is fine can get on easy enough, havent been to the launch but saw alot of people there so its got to b good there as well, make sure you have your kreepers as its askating rink out there

google maps has it at exit 13 route 205 north to rt 28 north this will bring you past the boat launch and backers beach. from oneonta your looking at 30 miles.

fished hard today after work - ran two lines of TU along the bouys by the island. The TU in 30+ produced well, as did jigging in that area, but TU and jigging in 15 fow were worthless - just FYI. Oxy levels seem to be depleting, although a local pro has been killing n 10-12 fow. Reports of bigger fish caught this week, but not from me.....Bad winds sat and sun, will be fishing sheltered areas.

I don't know how much walleye spawning occurs at Canadarago, but I think that anyone catching a big walleye should take a picture and then release
it. The big ones aren't that good eating and that is your breeding population, if there is one. Just a thought; nice catch anyway, whether it was a

I saw the pic via text message and it is quite the hog! Nice job Esox. Perchfilet- we can all agree that Esox had every right to take that fish home with him, but I agree that it seems a shame to end a 10 year life for a fry that will only be enjoyed for 10 mins! I'm all in favor of mounting if a fish must be taken home, at least that way the memory lasts forever.

NM - there is no official south end entrance, but there is room on the south west corner for about 4-5 cars to park along the lake side of 28. At the very last camp on the water people walk the southern border down to the lake - you won't miss all the tracks.

I believe you, seen that happen on Greenwood lk down in suffern few decades ago. Two monster browns pulled up minutes apart out of the same hole on tipups and small shiners. I myself caught smaller stockies jigging right under the ice..released about half a dozen ..apparently they were feeding on suspended alewive about an inch in size.. I had on a perfect match chrome kastmaster..nailed a few like this over the years looking for suspended perch.

had a poor day last saturday pm on southern end. we stuck with minnow imitations tipped w small buckeyes. noticed some insects in snow-looked like elongated ants. mite be worth a try if nothin else is workin. w this warm weather prob see a few more early or unseasonal hatches.

yes trout are closed on canadarago, this is not first time this winter that trout are being caught. i seen one that was caught on a tip up, its was between 15 and 16 inches. :nono:

i fished this morning with a group of 4 others. at first i caught 5 perch in the 2-3" range. wish i coulda kept them for pike bait on the canal. then they just stopped biting. marked all kinds of fish. then i put on a bro bloodworm that was red and it was one after another for over an hour before we left. kept 12 between 8-12". the bloodworm was what they wanted today

i was in 11' of water with nothing tipped on the bloodworm. when then would race up to it i would lift slow and it was fish on. i fished right next to 2 other guys without bloodworms and they only caught a couple perch

Kowboy I am VERY discouraged, but not surprised. I have given up perch fishing, leaving my buddies to catch hundreds of dinks in 10fow and instead moving around the lake searching deepwater points and drop offs. I have found some slightly better perch in 30FOW and am consistently jigging up perch there, but thats not what I'm looking for...
Went out tonight to a location as described, and caught a few perch in the 11" range and several unders, but, again, I'm giving up the quantity game and looking for some quality. Tomorrow's weather will be a game changer...

I tried for the eyes on Fri, nothing but rock bass after dark. Fished tip-ups and jigged. Used the flasher to set the tip-ups, and as soon as the minnow was 2 feet under the ice ,the dinks were streaming up from 8 - 14 fow to take a look. Jigging for perch was a fish every 30 seconds, until dark.

Had a REAL slow day on cando today, and man was the lake PACKED. It was a city on the east side. Several on sunken isl, a few off the boat launch, few south end, few between isl and shore, really lots of guy scattered all over.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see anybody catching good fish anywhere. Hundreds of tip ups around me, and very few flags.
I came away with some perch and a rock bass that made for a good dinner, but, for all the lines in the water, a very slow day.

Beautiful day on my Cando today! Fished south of the Island a ways. Lots of guys on the lake, but plenty of room near me. Fishe with Dad, Mrs. System, and BigJim223. Bald Eagle flying round us in the sun. Also, BigJim finally taught me the meaning of Ice Trolling! You should have seen him, sitting in his Clam just like normal, holding his ice rod, as I towed him down the lake at 30mph! Action was steady all day long and had some really outstanding fish. The Mrs. even caught a 10" Fall Fish/shiner! Here's a pic of two 12"+ perch we got. Best of all, we got one FAT MAMMA measured 13.5 with a tape and was fatter than a bass! She got put back so let's let her breed!

There were some nice perch caught out there today, though not by me. The tipups seemed to be the ticket as all I jigged was dinks.
Here's a picture of the 13.5 though it really doesn't do it justice. That was a NICE perch! Glad you let it go.

The bald eagle was a rush too. Ward fed it a perch, that is where it was coming from when we saw it. He threw it to the bird.
Oh, a lesson was learned by me today- Never call a game warden "Dude"! Especially when his dog's name is Dude! What an arrogant public employee! He needs to have a couple sessions working on his "Lakeside Manners", just my opinion.

I thought he was right next to us. I heard him a couple times and mentioned it to your pop. Those guys didn't even notice the CO when he was with us, he hassled them about their 4 wheeler, I guess. He (CO) was parked directly behind me when I left the lake. I had to move my truck to put down my tailgate to load up! I guess his attitude just comes with the job. I am sure he gets just as much as he gives. I had no problem, I knew I was legal. If you don't keep 'em (catch 'em!) you can't be over the 25 limit!

System...Nice perch! I applaud your releases. Every fish that size that my buddy and I have caught this year on Cando we put back. Those big spawners are precious. I wish that everyone fishing Cando would get into catch and release for bass. According to fisheries biologists, as the bass population goes so goes the quality panfishing.

Floatman, I'm glad to hear about another c&r guy! There's lots of meduim sized perch to eat, let the fatties swim! BigJIm said it right - why keep that monster breeder just for a 15 minute meal?? There's millions of eater sized 9-11 out there.

SLOOOOOOW day on the Cando today! Fished the north end and the sunken isl - very very slow. Heck of a nice sunny day though! Best catches of the day included a 24" sucker - what a fighter! and this Massive walleye! others included some dink perch. Quite a piece of humble pie from yesterday! Oh well, I got a nice set of Ice Shanty stickers in my truck from a friend, thanks! Will be at the other end of the lake tomorrow - variety is the spice of life!

Slow day out out there today. I fished around the state launch hand bakers bay and managed 6 perch, 2 over 12 inches. I lost a nice walleye right at the hole fishing in about 12-14 fow. All of my fish except 1 perch came while jigging. Will anyone be out there tomorrow? Im thinkin about fishing before my afternoon class.

Nice Kowboy - we gotta meet up sometime on the ice -especially with the women around. I'm glad to see that some of those stockies are still around, I know predator fishing usually picks right around the time/location that DEC dumps them in the lake.
Rob - Glad to hear about the walleye - wish you had it on the ice, but maybe I'll get it for ya! I'll be out fishing the bay north east of the island tomorrow with some of the womenfolk, big gray shappell 4000 shanty, blue polaris sled, stop on by! Mostly dinks there though.

Thinking about heading up this weekend, hows the fishing been? I fished here outta the boat a few times this fall but never through the ice. Where abouts do you launch to get onto the lake (the boat launch)? Always had good luck in the boat around the "sunken island" same go for through the ice?. Any advice would be much appreciated! ;D
Enough ice to bring the snowmobile with me?

Karas3434: If you are fishing the sunken island, park at Bakers Beach 1 mile north of the boat launch. Ice is great, no problem with a snomobile/ATV.

Last time i was up there the beach was gated off so i wasnt sure if you could launch from there... Thanks for the heads up! Hows the fishing been? Heard stories of ppl getting alot of "dink" perch with the occasional keeper mixed in. Honestly after a couple long days on Oneida/Delta with less than 5 fish being caught total for an 8-10 hour day, some action would be nice.

very busy day today on cando. thousands of perch, most under 6", several over 11". One 12" fall fish@! Had a 14" perch eyeballin my lure, no go though - i gave her too much time to think it over. better fish in deeper water. windy! Will be out there tomorrow, come find me!

went to the south end today. fished the west side 4'-30' drop picked up some nice ones of tip-ups and dinks on the jig pole. brought home 11. buddy dumped his wheeler in 4' on the sw corner where the bosnians walk down. rode over some weeds and had 2" of ice. got it out and fired right back up. needless to say he got a wet arse and we aren't going back this year. gonna play it safe and fish the northern lakes that have better fish and ice.

that sucks man. I was fishing just east of you. Hit a few pickerel there, not much else. Cando slowin right down. Fished east side across from sunken isl this morn, hit a 20" pickerel and some smaller perch. Seems like all this fishing pressure cleaned all the jumbo perch right out of the lake, just left the dinks. Supposed to be 20-30mph winds tonight and tomorrow, lets be careful out there

System nice pics damn Bass chew up my big Baits and twist up my leaders caught the same bass twice in the same hole using same bait.Tigers fight way better massive runs and head jerks.Smallies on rod and reel is fun.Need big Baits large suckers jig up some fall fish tigers are feeding on them.There's gotta be a mondo in there system I want to find it some hidden edge without pressure.

Fished out by Hyder today. Kinda slow, only got 8 YP dinks. Did get a nice 20+" pickeral in 5 fow on tip up. Heading out to south of island in the morning if not too windy. Good luck to all this weekend.

Ya Esox, I hooked a small 26" tiger this summer on lighter gear and it was the most violent fish I've ever caught! Still chasin a biggun. I have been catching lots of fall fish, mostly in the 12"+ range, you think thats too big?? Thanks for the tips!

Caught a couple fall fish couple weeks ago @ the haystack looked em up that nite on the dec website and they are shiner family. Cant imagine they taste good but they fight good on a lite action jig pole. Gave a good size one to esoxman that came on a T/U but he said it went belly up in his bucket not long after so dont know how long they would last with a hook thru their back

All the snow blew away! Haven't been to the lake today, but all the snow is blown off of my property and pond. I have a small drift in the usual places. It was 11 degrees here this morning, so I am confident that the ice has "repaired" it's self. Breezy and cold (19*) at 9am.

Fished shallow out by island this am slow to say the least caught a few perch one 10-11". Had a t/u in 5 fow that was pretty active when I was checking depth with vex. at this hole saw a bunch of marks so I looked down in the hole there where a pile of em down there with a good number of good ones. Didnt jig today prob should have tried, Next time.
Got to see the ECO @ bakers when we got in, all good, sounds like I was lucky... or prepared. Dont give em a reason to keep lookin.

The ice is fine off Bakers Beach. Four wheelers all over the place. 9"-10" at the least. Fish SE of shoal. 8'-30' of water. Three flags and 1 8" perch. Had some bites while jigging. Saw a school of dinks down the hole in 4' of water. Tried getting the ones on the bottom but NADA. They would look and go. Used 12 different combos with same results. First time there since 2010. Not complaining as I did chase some flags and mark fish. Some guy was cruising the lake in an ice boat. He even stopped and "pushed" it through my T/U area. You can't teach that kind of respect. The DEC was there checking as you have been told. If you are legal then don't worry about it. Had a nice chat with him and off he went. I don't know why people are afraid of them if you're not breaking the law. These are the same people you want cracking down on poachers AND FISHING INFRACTIONS.. Good luck to all...................

The problem I have with DEC, as many fishermen know, is that, the real poachers and criminals are so sneaky they never get caught. As a local, I know of a LOT of legally and morally wrong stuff that goes on at Cando. I deal with it personally as often as I can. Just friday I had a problem with a guy fishing next to me who kept leaving 4-6" perch on the ice for seagulls. He left and went home and never picked them up. About halfway thru the day me and a buddy caught on to this and began putting his fish back down the hole and said something to him. He got no ticket though. But, let a good fisherman who didn't have the labels on his TU or happen to have a license in his pocket pay a $100 fine?? Same thing goes for driving - how many unsafe drivers or drivers with cell phones get away unnoticed? It always seems to me the WRONG people get the tickets.

Kudos to you System for saving a few fish , it's a shame some people have to be that way . Recently i've seen water bottles , bait containers etc on the ice which i pick up . Lets keep our lake clean . Tight lines . Nice catch on the bass.

At "Tom & Kelly's" in Springfield Ctr, they are open by 7am (sometimes around 6:30). Spikes, waxies, med shiners. and small fatheads available. Don't know the hours of the bait places in Richfield/Schyler Lake. "TheSystem" should know.

brads in schyler lake is open earlier than most, sometimes as early as 5 am. His phone # is 315 858 1878. Call the night ahead and he will accommodate you. He has hundreds of medium shiners. Joes 4 seasons is out of bait for a while, due to illness.

Finally me and the gf had agreat day on cando, we started off in 24ft of water that i had marked off bakers and we were getting dinks so moved 50yds or so in 28ft of water and started hitting big perch. they were coming off the bottom like missels and bang theyd hit, then afew dinks and then it would start again, so for 3hrs it was on. She had alot of fun as i couldnt get my pole in while she was pulling up me taking off the fish and then rebaiting her hook lol. was using a perch football jig tipped with spikes, and i was using the ones that were dead and had turned dark color, not saying thats why the big ones were biting but i kept putting them on her hook. i was the only one out that far as everyone was in shallow. DEC stopped seen my screen was lit up said hi checked us and said alet u get back to having fun.

I'm glad the DEC is out checking people. They are doing their job and I know they are catching people doing illegal stuff. I really don't mind when they do stop and check as most are really nice and will stop to B.S. with you. You can learn about some good places to fish from them. If you do see someone doing something illegal then call 1-800-tipp-dec or 911 and get the sheriff's dept involved. We have to help them as their numbers have been reduced of the past few years. On a final note, we should all be glad DEC is out there doing their job...if the governor has his way, there might not be any DEC officers to enforce the law.

I think I saw you 2 earlier in the day. Glad you both did well. I just couldn't get those bottom fish to strike. Was fishing as deep as you 2 were. The System, Sorry to hear about the $100 ticket for no lable. With the slow year and late ice you would hope people would have the time to lable their t/u's..... The law has been in place forever and there have been previous posts about the DEC on the lake. As for the small perch on the ice. Take a picture and send it to the DEC. May not get imediate results but at least you tried. Sooner or later they will get caught with help from all......

Like the fight like the meat but tear up my leaders I dont see the trade off.

couldnt agree more with you system. got a ticket for not having my name one 1 new tip up last year on fourth lake. also got one today on piseco for keeping 2 under sized lakers. now before everyone gets mad, i let many go all day and the 2 that i decided to keep were gut hooked with trebles(last time i use those) they were a bloody mess. tried release but they just floated back up. Seems shameful to let a fish go to waste.

The Dec would rather you let those fish die at the bottom of the hole? You did the responsible thing, and were punished for it, thats exactly what I'm talking about. What if one of us caught a bass on a TU that was obviousl going to die - bleeding, gut hooked, the works. We're supposed to just leave it to die under the ice??? BS
I believe its up to fishermen to do the right thing, and to make sure others do the right thing, not the legislature's job to decide whats right on the water.

well the officer said anywhere up to 250 dollars each. best part is i only got one of them! the other was caught by my buddies friend who is 15 and i ended up with responsibility for the whole group cuz im oldest at 20. M4, that really sucks. The Dec would rather you let those fish die at the bottom of the hole? You did the responsible thing, and were punished for it, thats exactly what I'm talking about. What if one of us caught a bass on a TU that was obviousl going to die - bleeding, gut hooked, the works. We're supposed to just leave it to die under the ice??? BS
yep put em back he said. said the hooks will rust out. now i know that these plated hooks dont rust out in reasonable enough time to keep the fish alive.i mean ive caught bass with snells coming out of their butt so i guess cheapos dont either very well. and how is the fish supposed to eat with the hook in its throat.i even showed him the hook in one of them that broke off. He also said other fish will eat them.

In many cases the person should be able to keep an undersized fish if its going to die, but think about all the people who would intentionally injure fish just so they could use that as an excuse.

I observed a DEC officer watch a fisherman catch an undersized trout that was bleeding badly. The DEC officer told the man to keep the fish and he
wrote him a permit to do so. Notice, however, that the DEC officer saw the man catch the fish. Otherwise, someone could keep an undersized fish
and claim it was too badly injured to survive. It's too bad, but that's the way it is. P.S. Don't fish for trout with treble hooks.

no, that is how laws work. What would keep someone from catching a huge out-of-season walleye, ripping their gills and saying, oh jeese, they were bleeding anyway. Look, just be glad DEC was out there, PERIOD. I wish they were there every single day, Otsego too. They've busted my stones more than a few times for trivial stuff, but I'm glad to see them. Every time I'm out fishing, I assume I am going to be checked by DEC.

BigRed, you're completely right in the big picture, we're way better off with them out there. and I agree, if they were they every day there would be a lot less fishing pressure and exceeded limits. I just encourage ECOs to know their fishermen and know who need their balls busted and who does the right thing, regardless of the letter of the law.

I think we need to have encon officers out there because there are violators out there but I am not one and I don't think I should not have to worry about getting the third degree from an eco everytime I go fishing . Last year I was ice fishing on cando and encon came to the shack . We did absolutely nothing wrong but he gave us a big attitude because I was from johnstown and my friend was from wells then he proceeded to search through our shack for illegal fish . Up into seargents pond for ice out last year ecos were hiding in the woods evesdropping on us trying to catch us talking about something illegal and they arrested a guy from another camp for talking about deer jacking . It never used to be like that and I feel it is getting to be borderline harrasment . I actually went to college to be an encon officer but once I got to see how sneeky and dishonest alot of them can be and how it was not uncommon for ecos to have people threaten them I decided on another carrer . So far every time I have been out this year I have been stopped and it is just getting old. >:(

Fished hyder this am. picked up my t/u's and moved when two guys come out and set up between a buddy and I >:( not a big deal its not my lake but he and I were only 40 yds apart! This year is the most I have ever been setup on I dont get it. What happened to a little courtesy.
So I moved south 1/2 mileish (30+ fow) and caught a few had to move around some but end up with 14 good ones, after 1pm it picked up and if the showed on the vex. they bit. On my way back had to go all the way down to the island cuz the crack heaved back up where I crossed it this am, poked around it with my boot no place to cross it to the west till 3/4 the way back east. Then pull into BL and who was there :callcops: no trouble cuz he remembered me from yesterday.
System;Did ask him if he was gonna do anything bout the fish bein left on the ice on the south end, said he wrote some for that B4 down there. Maybe he will keep a closer eye on it

PerchTrapper - I've been set up on a lot this year too. I think its due to added pressure because of lack of ice on other lakes. It sucks. That pressure ridge in the middle is wicked ain't it! Saw a guy jump it on a sled at about 30, went right into the air, Cool but dumb! Also glad to see my problems are on ECO's mind, he's been called with the offender's name which was written down from his tip ups. ADKRoy is right, we all have our pros and cons of ECOs but this isn't the place for the discussion, and I'm more guilty than the rest of ya in that. I think it was discussed here because there's all the sudden a much higher ECO presence at Cando, again, due to lack of ice elsewhere. We'll let it go....

I haven't been on the ice since saturday, but previous posts by kowboy and others indicate 8-10" of good ice still. Its been real cold s I'd say even shorelines are nice and hard still.

I can't imagine this little bit of weather would hurt the ice any, there's 8"+ out there. It may be slushy and tough pulling a sled, but I wouldn't cancel any plans over it

5 to 6" heavy wet snow slush layer not real bad, ice holdin... bring a machine, this stuff will wear you out not used to pullin a sled in the snow been spoilied this year

yes the lake is rough walking with the snow we got on the lake its about 6 or 7 inchs of snow but still got good ice on my lake
I was out there today & got more dinks & more dinks came up & also got more tip-up bait perch
but it was fun just to be out there

Well it was achoice of going to cando or little lakes and i decided to go to ll, my friend went to cando said it was slow except for dinks, we made aplan to go out on sunday with abunch of friends. Going to do chili dogs on the ice and just bs while catching some dinks lol see you sunday

just left their. It was a sloppy mess.ice was about 8inches were we were. not a bad drag but a little rough with all the slush. Saw one wheeler come out of bakers . Had 2 guys on it and all i could hear them say is man i am soaked. Fishing was ok. Lots of dinks and tip up perch, but no real keepers. Biggest yellow was just about 8". fished from 7:00 til 11.30 and from 8 fow to 29fow. dinks were aggressive but the bigger one were real picky. had a good time. saw alot og guys on youngs lake on way back. hope they had better luck than we did.

OK promised a report and it was all dinks today. There was 5 of us and we had agood time we just circled the shelters and ate chili dogs and bulled while catching many dinks. We had a 10yr old Daniel with us and he was atrip with his pole and jig showing us how we should b fishing, lol then he got bored and told me we should be using perch eyes so he tried that and then after no fish he decided it was agood idea to try apiece of bread on his hook, it was hilarious to watch him, typical 10yr old and he was alot of fun, oh and he was in my shanty because he said his dad was to cheap to buy a heater buddy lmao just to funny and agood way to end the day with the next generation of hardwater fishermen

system ur right on the next generation it was alot of fun with him today. As far as cando i was done with fishing there as of the other day if it wasnt for my friends i woulnt have gone there today. There still was alot of people out it seemed, atleast 15 vehicles in bb parking lot. saw alot by the launch and seemed afew out by the iosland with guys throughout the lake

oh and forgot to say that one of my friends caught areal nice brown, it was about 17inches id say he didnt want to keep it out of the water for long so he got it back in the water quick. it did have some marks on it lkike maybe it had a scrape with a tiger at one time

I fished over there couple weeks ago for half a day with my boys we caught some little little perch had a few flags and one produced a nice perch. I like weaver end of may first part of june that is a good time!

Ya this sun/wind\rain combo will wreck the shallow ice real fast. Can't say that i'm sorry though, I had a great season on the ice, caught over 500 perch (counted), with about 450 of them less than 8"! Did end up with some real nice pickerel, fallfish, one walleye (6"), a 1.5 lb lmb and my fish of the season, a 19.5" 5lb lmb. did not get the trout I've always wanted, even with the advice of Kowboy, but i suppose thats what spring fishing is for. see you guys on the water - i'll be on the softwater boards reporting conditions and catches under the same name, feel free to get ahold of me for info or to schedule a teamwork trip

System it been a blast caught 2 walleyes 2 big pickeral no tigers believe I had one on broke a treble hook and straightened out another for 100 or so hrs i put on cando that stunk.They are loading the lake the numbers are up strange more tigers mean less dinks something wrong,Putting atoyhauler trailer on the lake see ya soon.Ps just ice fish not interested in rod and reel plus get seasick.

i imagine that the tigers wont target the little perch as much with all the nice juicy easy to eat alewifes swimming around. once they chew them up enough the dinks are on the menu in my opinion

i have a 8 inch alewife that was in my ice skimmer I was cleaning my ice hole & I raized my skimmer it was flatside & a live LOL
I also had a good year of ice season there @ the lake but didnt land any walleye this year a few years back I landed a 22 inch walleye keeper on a jig

Some sort of rescue going on at the lake right now, off Bibik Road. Fire Trucks, ambulances, and helicopter. Hope everyone's ok. Lets remember to be safe out there, this weather might be nice, but its not safe.

went over and looked yesterday bout 330 the ice was green and the shores where open, there where a couple guys off bakers couple hundred yards out. dont know if I would have tried it today. Hope what ever is goin on there comes out good and everyone made it out ok! System or PPCD if you would post when u have more info.

Typical hotspots include around the island, the sunken island, hyder creek, and the north and south ends.

Park at Bakers beach on 28s, walk straight out 100yds. that'll be the west edge of it. another 100yds or so, and you'll find the east edge.

The lake is 3/4 open water with unsafe ice at the ends. A few guys fell thru on nearby Youngs Lake. All made it out ok, but terrible experience I'm sure. I strongly recommend letting all local waters ice over better this week before going out, and even next weekend be careful to check every step.

My father and I ran into him at the launch a couple years back. He actually seemed pretty decent, but it was a pretty crappy day and we were the only ones out. Plus for some reason, people seem to get along with my pops.

I would be awful careful around that area, my weather station located 100ft off the boat launch is reading 36* water temp, which is a little high for this time of year still. I'm still waiting till saturday, like slymer said, tonight will help a lot.

i agree they are in there. they really make you work for it and you have to go hard to connect good. tracking em down is the first part. i have a few spots up my sleeve to try on ice this year i learned this summer.

Guys - I know its cold and I know we're seeing ice out there, but the area's ice is not super safe - lets remember the guys out on neighboring Youngs last weekend, there was 4-5" there too, just not good ice. The areas along the eastern and northern shore are frozen pack ice, they iced up before this cold snap, that will not make great ice even when it looks solid. Not trying to scare anybody off, but remember to be careful out there. I will be out there too, north of the island, feel free to stop by, but please don't think that this weekend will be lake-wide safe ice. Good Luck out there and stay dry!

I was at the lake today to just check it out. Saw some guys on the ice, one guys was just south south of Hyder creek. Another guy was off from bakers beach. At the boat launch I ran into a guy coming in who just went to check. He was out there far with his spud but said he punched right through with one swipe. Closer to share was good he said with almost 6 inches which was mostly white ice. there is no bait in Schuyler at Gas Way. The owner said he was hoping for a delivery soon but could not confirm he would have any spikes by weekend. However Kellys deli on the corner of Rt 20 and RT 80 has plenty of spikes and mousees.

Tom and Kelly's at Rt 20 and 80, Springfield Ctr, was supposed to have fatheads, shiners, spikes, etc as of Thursday. Can't confirm that they got the minnows as I did not ask today.

Was out on the East side tonight, on the new ice. I STRONGLY advise caution - it was less than 2", spud went thru with one chuck, like posted above. This was only in 4' of water. The middle, creeks, island, all very dark ice, and many visible water rivers running thru it. I really really advise caution this weekend, the lake temp is 36* - combine that with a little sun or above freezing temps, and that thin ice will be melting. Our FD does not have an ice boat! IF you're going, bring a friend, use a rope, and stay away from the deep water and watch for the springs, spud every step. In a side note, 4seasons bait, on the hill above the boat launch, has a full line of live bait and tackle, shiners, fatheads, spikes.

went out state launch 1230-7. 3.5 to 5" ice out to the new ice. u can get out to 31 fow. i would nt get within 10 ft of the new ice. spudded my way out and wore my life vest for the first hour. u cant go south much and only 120 yds out, so it could get crowded. would nt bunch up either. 99% dinks. 9.5 fow worked for me. 30+ for my friend. sm perch and some rockbass at dusk. nice to get out there, nice day.

Hit the ice on Darago this morning for a few hours. We brought the safety gear (PFD's, creepers, rope, hand-held spikes).Only ventured out about 50 yards or so. Any farther out is still unsafe. The white ice was about 3 inches where I was, the newest black ice is less then 1 inch. One hit with the spud went through the new ice. Noticed some wet spots popping up today on the ice, so use CAUTION if going out this weekend. Fished in 11 fow. Caught 12 YP all this size. C&R all.

went out bakers beach for the afternoon. caught dinks from 7-25 fow. c&r for me. my friend kept 2. spudded my way out w pfd. so after i drilled 10 holes, 3-5" popped a hole w 1.5" of mostly black ice in 8 fow. so keep the spud handy and know that these spots will go first if there s a melt. nice afternoon, cooperative small fish. still staying off the new ice.

Fished the west side today for a few hours. Not a ton of action. Caught a bunch of dinks in 6-15 fow. Ice conditions are still the same. Wore my PFD and had my spud with me every where I went. Still use caution when exploring. Did get one some what respectable YP about 9.5 inches long, caught on tip -up in 18 fow on big shiner. I also caught my first Fallfish. Pulled him up jigging with a chubby darter in 15 fow. C&R all.

Hit the south end this morning for a few hours. Kinda slow, only a few flags. Jigged up 15 YP around 7-8 inch mark in 10-20 fow. C&R all. Ice still a little touchy, but fishable if you play it smart and spud your way around.

hit the ice on south end off bibik road today, with lil_coondog like in his post slow, but im writing this to say we were both upset with trash and cig butts left by so fisherman who thought the lake was a large dumping hole, before leaving we spent 10 min picking up trash. all we say is respect the lake and others who use it. >:(

hit state launch 12-6. was slow. kept 2. nothin w tip ups. 10 fow. my friend ventured out to the new ice and did a lil better. he wore a rope most of the day. i ve walked and fished on thinner ice, but still dont have confidence on the 3.5 of black ice that i measured. the holes were icing over all day, and after 3 the lake was singin pretty good.glad to be fishin on such a beautiful day.

good report, I too would not risk 3.5 even 4 inches feels risky to me. I beenice fishing for over thirty years and remember how I risked it on 2 inches of black ice over deep lakes in the adk state park lakes.. I was so lucky when I think about the few times I did that way back in the days. Even with all the safety gear I wear , the floatation suite,grip safety hand spikes, rope.. I am not risking under 4 inches of black ice.

Out on Cando for a few hours today with Papa Coondog. Called it quits when the rain started to pick up. Fished north of the Hyder on the west side in 5-15 fow, caught 8 YP in the 8-9 inch range. Saw some nice jacks in the shallower water, couldn't get any of them to bite. C&R all. Don't think the black ice will survive the warm weather this weekend. Hope I'm wrong.

Was out this weekend, ice was real spotty. Black holes, white splotches, grey ice all in between. Then covered with a thin layer of snow, and now impossible to tell what's what. Plenty of guys have been on it, but, to me, I'd stay right off for a few days.

PigRoastPaul and George are out there this afternoon. Told me colder than a, well you know, with a wicked NW wind. When I talked to them all they had was dinks in 12-14FOW. I was going over but it was just too windy and cold where I was to go set up again.

Fished all day with papacoondog on the west side. Was about -12 when we hit the ice in the morning. Not much snow on the west side, maybe 1.5" of powder. We had a good 5" of ice where we were. Set tip-ups in 5-31 fow. Jigged in 20 fow. Fished until 3:00 and had a pretty good day. Caught 68 YP, 1 fallfish, and 1 rock bass. Most of the YP were in the 5-7 inch range, but we did get into a bunch of jacks in the 10-12 inch range. Papacoondog got a nice 12" YP on blue sweedish pimple and jigged up a 15" fallfish. Had some good tip-up action with over 30 flags and only a few drops. All in all a good day, but crazy cold. C&R all 70.

Hit the ice for a few hours this morning with Papacoondog. Very cold out, but the sun was out and the wind wasn't bad, so conditions were tolerable. Fished east side in about 8-15 fow. No tip-ups just jigged. Caught 13 YP, with the biggest about 11". Chubby darter was bringing them in, but they would only bite on much smaller jigs. Kinda slow, at least we did't get skunked. About 5" of ice where we were. C&R all. Ice conditions should be favorable for wide spread fishing this weekend. Good luck to all.

I had a thought today about this lake and how its changed in the 10 years of me fsihing it. it used to be full of big perch that I couldn't keep off a hook.now its absolutely packed with dinks. Could the high number of dinks be hurting the poplutaion? Too much predation on their food sources and too much competiotion to allow the fish to reach the bigger sizes it was known for in the past? Maybe these dinks need to be thinned out

Most of our predator fish are eating alewives, the perch population has been left uncontrolled. There is only so much food in the lake, so when a million little perch swarm the food, there is less available for the big ones to eat and grow. That's why its tough for me to see guys taking buckets of 12" perch home, there really ain't as many left in there as people think, and the opportunity for more to replace those is tougher each year.

You hit the nail on the head System. The lake right now is exactly like it was 30 years ago when I first started ice fishing it. One dink after another or two at a time if you had a dropper. Then the stocked predators took hold and slowly the avg. size of the perch increased. Once the perch started running keeper size the commercial guys took over and ruined it. They've never recovered, partially because the state never continued to stock at the numbers they needed to control the perch boom. Now they're back to stocking but its ineffective given the alewive population present.

Indeed. I worked with DEC to sock 32,000 walleye fry this august, but at 4" I don't believe that many of them are even alive still, let alone thru the spring feed.

While we're here, I'd like to throw a plug in for all the guys fishing Cando to consider joining the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association. It's only $25 a year, and all of that $ goes directly into the lake - dam reconstruction, stocking, biological studies, and weed control. We have two meetings a year, and all are welcome to attend members or not. Also, we run a pretty handy weather station at www.canadaragolake.com, under real time weather. Check it out, it will help you prepare for the day's conditions before you leave the house. There were a few years of bad small town politics that kind of ruined the CLIA's reputation, but that's old history, and new guys like me are really dedicated to protecting and improving the lake. I could use some help!

The Tuscarora Lake association used to stock the fry as well. It was decided that the mortality rate was so bad that they decided to stock the fingerlings instead. Since switching over, the lakes walleye population has really taken off.

hit the hard water this AM with lil coondog, took the wheeler out for the first time. :) We fish around the hyder creek, the action was slow today, only caught 17 perch all CR. Most were between 7 and 9in. Six inches of real good ice.

I've heard guys fishing with cameras say there's plenty of jacks left and that there only feeding and chasing the alewife schools what's everyone think of this theory oh and I do think the Russians ruined it but keep in mind they were also keeping subpar fish along with the jacks

I too fish with a camera, and see a good few 12" + but they're like mature trees - when you take one down, it takes years to replace it and only IF living conditions are right

How'd everybody do out there this weekend? I sure was beautiful. The morning sun and bluebird skies had the lake looking like millions of diamonds were scattered across it. And we hit some real nice fish too! But, man, even those pretty mild winds made things awful cold.

6-8 of us fished cando all weekend. lotta small perch with no size, couple 11-12s, couple 3-4 pnd smallys and other than that not much happening. Full moon and temps didn't help. Eyes were no where to be found! Been fishing cando all my life with cottage on east shore, limit out on eyes all summer long but have yet to have much luck during winter!

Fished sunday on west side. Good 5 1/2- 6" of ice. Caught 35 YP in about 18 fow. Most in the 5-7" range, only few around 10". Weather was great, nice day to be out. Good to see people on the lake. C&R all.

Hit the ice before sun up today with papacoondog. Fished west side until noon. Very foggy morning, but temps were comfortable. Still a good 6" ice where we were, but may not last after this rain and warm weather passes through. Had solid tip-up action through the morning, with most fish caught in 5-12 fow. Jigging was a little slower today, but at least we had flags to tend. Fish worth mentioning was a nice YP and pickeral. YP was caught on shiner in 8 fow at day break and pickeral soon after in same depth. YP measured just over 13", and pickeral was almost 19". All other fish were YP under 8". C&R all, even the big YP. Very slushy out there and is only gonna get worse, might need to bust out the creepers. Use caution if fishing tomorrow, stay away from inlets and watch for bad edges. Lets all hope the ice hangs on for us.

Nice day lil CD - and props to you and Papa on the C&R - very few guys on cando would release a 13" perch, that's putting the lake ahead of your own wants, you da man. ANother of my friends was out today and kept sending me pictures while I was at work - really made my day miserable. I to am a little worried about the ice conditions, thanks for the updates, I won't be on the lake till friday.

Fished today on west side from before sun rise til noon. Very very windy. First time I have ever had tip-ups blown out of the holes. Alot of water on the ice and its only getting worse. Got off the ice in a different spot due to the amount of water that accumulated where we got on in the morning. Did notice about an inch less in ice, about 5" where we were. Caught 63 YP mostly on jig poles. C&R all. All YP were smaller then 10", nothing to impressive, but we did have some good action.

Fished 20 ft of water off the boat launch today managed 9 keepers over 9 inches for dinner alot of dinks. 6 to 8 inches of ice everywhere we drilled. shoreline froze hard today.

Fished on Sunday, did pretty well. 17 in the bucket after sorting through all the little guys.
I got to see this guy run past my shanty just before sunrise. Thought it was an Otter at first then guessed Fisher. Whatever it was it was moving with purpose!

Sounds like your 12 yr old is smart kid. I'm starting to think the same thing. Although I do see them in the spring and summer, they seem to vanish come freeze up. Good luck out there.

Nice to see people still enjoying cando. Hopefully this weather forecast is wrong and we don't get to much of the white stuff. Didn't do any fishing today. Instead went for a walk on cando with my lab Raven and papacoondog. Saw a few people towards the south end and a bunch more scattered from the bakers to the hyder creek. Wasn't to happy when I came across this scene near the hyder creek. It's pretty disrespectful to come out here and leave all this garbage behind. Now, I can totally understand when the accidental coffee cup or cigarette butt is left behind, but to leave this amount of trash is absolutely deliberate and irresponsible. I love seeing people come to cando in the winter and ice-fish, its exciting to see other people out here, but at what cost? If people cannot come out here and enjoy themselves without leaving trash everywhere, they should just stay home. I pride myself, and so does my father, in leaving this lake the way we found it. I suggest that the person(s) responsible for this mess do the same if they want a fishable body of water in the future. Sorry for the ranting, but this kinda stuff really bothers me. Still not sure why those perch were just thrown to the crows. Good luck to all and stay on the fish! Forgot to mention, we did get a garbage bag and picked up the mess.

went out state launch 12-dark. easy walkin 1" snow or less. headed towards the island. in deep water measured 6", 7 closer to shore. on eastern side of island measured 4.5", all black ice. there were wheelers in middle of lake, but anywhere there s water flow u mite find that thinner ice. was tuff today, 10 small yp

There have been snowmobiles all over on west side south of boat launch for over a week now. I have had my ATV all around the west side from launch to south end. Good luck.

Just past the south end of the lake on rt 28. Turn onto taylor road. Bait shop is less then a half mile up. Its 4 Seasons Bait Shop. Nice little place.

Just found out that the tournament on cando tomorrow is cancelled. The person I spoke with told me that they might re-schedule it for two weeks from now. I'm still hitting the ice in the morning. Good luck to everyone out there this weekend.

9 to 10 inches at my house and i live a mile from the lake. Drove by there on the way to the vets and saw 2 people at bakers 2 down at the lower end and on wheeler plowing a skating rink down by hyder. The guys at baker were at the old skating rink and it looked to be a hard drag

Yes KC shes ok i brought her because shes been doing alot of scratching the vet says shes at that age where they develope allergies, so put her on some medicine to hopefully help. Heading to Oneida tomarrow with the sled and Colleen if your coming let me know and ill come in and pick you up

went out state launch 2-530. couple guys leavin were doin well in shallow. so on their 3rd hole did find the fish(thanks). still pretty small. active all afternoon. 9 fow w weeds. had to keep the lures tipped w spikes. threw few different lures at the bigger marks on screen but could nt get a nibble. nice day but did get cold as the sun set. 7.75" of ice. 5" snow.

i love canadarago and have been fishing there for years now we slay the walleyes when theres no ice mostly perch when it freezes but a few eyes here and there thanks for keeping lake clean ..... cant believe people just left all that trash and wasted those fish like finding a nice deer in woods with only head cut off and meat spoiled if u lay em on the ice u better eat em thanks for cleaning it up

Fished Cando yesterday on west side solo style. Got out at 2:30 and set up tip-ups and started jigging, Didn't expect much action, but did get lucky and find a spot where they were biting. Caught 31 YP and 1 Rocky. Not very big, but a few over 10". Kept them all alive in bucket with an aerator so I could get a picture before releasing them. Went out today with papacoondog and fished until 2:00. Mixed it up and went to south end for the first time this season. Set up tip-ups in 5-22 fow and jigged in 12 fow. Caught 34 YP, mostly dinks, but a few 10"+. C&R all.

I'm not sure if I"m gonna fish sat morn, but I encourage anyone interested to - the way the slow catches have been going, I wouldn't be surprised to see the winning perch be less than 12"!

I agree with System. I don't know why I keep going there other than there are no other options for me nearby. Once again, dink central today. Ah, the good ol' days when you could catch a dozen 10" perch to take home for the frying pan and release the rest. I'm afraid those days are long gone and never coming back. But, if they do rest assured that once the word gets out "the city" of ice fisherman will once again converge on the lake and wipe them out in short order. Sorry for the negativity but us geezers remember how good it used to be 20 something years ago.

You don't need to go that far out. We were out 200 yds today and 3 of us easily iced close to 400 perch. We kept 3 limits of 8 to 9" perch. I would stay shallow if I was you.

Floatman seems to have hit the nail on the head , i also remember the good old days . In the 30 years that i've had a camp on the lake it seems whenever the fishing improves within a few short years we're going in the opposite direction again . Hopefully i'll be able to enjoy some good quality fishing days with my grandson yet. Floatman if you ever want to try a new lake p/m me , i'm game .

I won't be able to get out in the morin because that's when I have work, but I recommend you fish in the shallow about 5-10fow that's we're the big perch will be at this time of year . Good luck on the water and let me know how it went for you

I drive by the lake daily in my work truck. It's funny.ive seen the geese group tighter and tighter every day in less and less open water

Fished west side today with papacoondog. Did some jigging and put out some tip ups. Caught 16 YP all 10" and under, C&R all. Had 4-5" of ice all around us. Hitting the ice again in the morning.

Was out today too, east side. 3-4" ice, no good fish. Will be out daily as well, but not looking forward to the snow and cold - friday hi of 0*!

Back on east side earlier today. Snowing and blowing, about 8" of fresh snow on ice around 2 PM. Caught 26 YP, mostly in the 7-9" range, C&R all. Had 4-5" of ice.

8' weedlines and mud flats are always good producers, hit the outside or inside edges depending on the day/season. Boat launch, Bakers Beach all offer good access.

I'm not gonna tell you it's safe... the rest of the lake is averaging 4-5" of ice but I have not checked the ice there nor heard from anyone else there. Regardless of the ice, going out at nite in -20* is not gonna win any "smart" competitions...not saying I've never done it either, but, tomorrow looks a whole lot better..

Don't think there was many people out as I went all the way around the lake and there was 2 shantys out at bakers nobody but a guy wind sailing at the boat launch, then one guy on the east side out, probably from his camp. I went around the lake at around 1pm or so

Fished west side today with the wife, set up in 27 FOW. Got 43 YP with the biggest being 10". C&R all.

Fished west side yesterday afternoon with my son. In the 2 hrs we were there we caught a lot of perch, but the biggest was 10" and 1 was 9", the rest were smaller. All were released. Is anyone getting any bigger ones? It was nice to be out there but would like to get one a little bigger once in a while.

NYS had been stocking 12000 tiger fry each year, but have stopped two years ago due to lack of angler interest/evidence of success. I see young tigers every year though. We need to write letters.

If you ask me they should stick more walleye fingerlings.they will target the alewives and yoy perch more throughout their entire life. As soon as those tigers hit 2 or 3 ft lookout 12 inch jacks and young eye. Your bait

We put in 30-40k walleye fry each year. Unfortunately, due to predation, few of those survive. They are bass and pickerel bait!

Walleye fry are 4-5". Walleye stocking ends in 15 I believe, I'll check. EIther way, the state is pretty committed to that program because they know it is the only answer to our alewive problem (as evidenced in Otsego).

O2r, haven't seen you since last year! Heard you had some good fishing the other day. I've been asking the state to do just that for a few years, but it all comes down to $ of course. It is very cheap and easy to raise walleye up to 4", after that, they get aggressive and require more space, and start killing eachother supposedly, so they give us the most cost effective option, regardless of its success. I"m thankful to get what we get, but I believe even 1000 10" walleye would do more good that 30,000 4".

BS. It was the irresponsibility of the 80s and 90s that have put the lake in this state. People thought that there was no limit to the fish that could be taken out, heck, remember the days with increased Walleye limits and commercial perch selling? People think that the lake always was and always will be...no matter what they dump into it. Nobody bothered to clean their boats when going from lake to lake, so now we have problems like Eurasian Milfoil, Curly Leaf Pondweed, Starry Stonewort, Zebra Mussels, Alewives, etc. Most people do not believe that their actions have massive effects on the lake. The lake is JUST NOW beginning to be managed correctly. We have posted a Lake Steward at the boat launch to check incoming boats for invasive weeds (this year he pulled a highly invasive water chestnut from a boat BEFORE it got into the lake), we do weekly nutrient, O2, and temperature monitoring, yearly fish surveys, water level monitoring, streambed mapping, and are using all this info to develop a long term Lake Management plan to avoid the mistakes of the past. If you value the lake, please help me, get involved with CLIA, we're having a meeting on Feb 26th, at the Vet's club at 6pm to learn about the lake's invasive species. Presentations will be from Oneonta Professors as well as my Lake Management Team from Soil&Water, Biological Field Station, and CLIA.

Ive seen the commercial BS and it sucks for us who go to fish for fun and to bring home a meal ,I sat on a lake last year up north and watched 4guys get their limit of perch then left, two hours later they were back and slinging fish again. 4 guys 50 fish times twice a day just say 2 times a week. Mean time I fished for about eight hrs came home with 15-20 fish threw an unknown amount back.
Like to try to make that meeting, if you could post a reminder when it gets closer

System...I take back my X3. I guess I wasn't thinking about the term mismanagement. You hit the nail on the head with the problems. I also remember the commercial guys out there off Marble Road that used to take buckets of perch. Its seems like we're right back where we were in the old days of the early 80's (probably before you were born) when you could catch all the dinks you wanted, but that was it. I'm not optimistic that we'll ever see a time when you can go out & catch a mess of keepers (I never keep more than a dozen). If & when that happens it will be a zoo out there.

No offense taken Floatman. I don't care what lake you're talking about, Oneida, even Ontario. if you get the amount of guys who fish Cando taking 25 12+" perch out each weekend, your population is gone in a few weeks. Many people don't realize it takes 4 years to grow a 12" perch. I will tell you that there are still lots of 12-14" perch there, but they can be real hard to find. One other thing compounding the problem is that the vast majority of the lake's predators are no longer targeting perch - that's why the smallest perch are so numerous and brazen. The alewives are now the target food for the lake's predators, leaving the perch population unchecked. This may be a controversial statement, but I've been thinking that we fishermen should start keeping limits of perch smaller than 6" every weekend. Ever notice that those ones are often so aggressive that you have to play keep away with your bait just to give the bigger ones a chance? That might take some burden off the food chain and give those 8" perch a chance to become 10 next year, and 12 the year after.

Fished west side today south of Hyder with papacoondog. Had about 5-6" of ice out there. Took the wheeler out with us. Moved around a bunch and marked fished at about every hole, but the bite was a little slow. Only got 7 YP all under 10", C&R all.

I got out today, probly one of the worse days on rago only got 8 perch all under 7" most of them didn't even want to bite, very slow today hope It doesn't stay like this. Ice was 8-9" thick

Fished today 1_9_14 from 7:30AM until 11:00 AM off of Bakers Beach. 15 to 18 FOW. Jigging. Caught 25 perch from 4" to maybe 7". All released. Lots of action but not 1 fish that could be kept. It's fun to catch a bunch of fish, but a little frustrating when there are no 12 inchers mixed in.

I believe he is referring to his home or favorite lake. Not his personal lake. Have to read all posts to understand where people are coming from not 1/2 way through. I have fished Cando on many occasions. Nice lake but have to put your time in. Nice views for when it's slow. Hope the weather doesn't mess the ice up. Would be dangerous for fisherman who were there 3 days ago and coming in thinking like 3 days ago..

Very very few walleye have been taken out of the lake through the ice over the past several years...like, count them on one hand. Read my various posts in the Fishing Cando thread. Basically, there is virtually no natural reproduction, very low survival rate of stocked fingerlings, and yet during the summer many people still continue to take out as many of the remaining adults as they can. So, it's like your bank account...if you keep making withdraws without putting a paycheck in, you're bankrupt pretty soon!

System , that's a good way of putting it, i think that also holds true for the largemouth and smallmouth bass , years ago we used to catch a lot of smallmouth but not so many any more if we do catch any bass it's c&r 99% of the time. I know some fishermen keep the bass which they have the right to but like you say sooner or later the population is going to go the other way .

Fished east side today with papacoondog. Had steady action and we were chasing flags all day. Came back with an empty bait bucket. Got 20 YP and 2 CP. Largest YP was 12" and pickerel were 22" and 23". Kept all YP under 10" and C&R everything else. Nice day out.

Fished east side again today with papacoondog. Temps weren't bad, but it rained the entire time we were out there. Got pretty soaked. Still had 6"+ of ice, water all over the ice. Flags were a little slow, jigging was even slower. Busted out the jaw jackers and got some YP on small minnows. Still managed a few pickerel and a few YP over 10". Kept a bunch of the dink YP and C&R all the rest. Packed up at noon.

I love this lake! I've only ice fished once but when I did I had about 10 flags before my buddy and I could get our tip ups in. We didn't even put them all in because it was crazy.

its mid-winter. Tough perch bite unless your covering water. I would also hazard a guess that a lot of folks are putting a lil' more time in on Otsego, too.

Do they still stock tiger musky in there. I thought was what turned the lake around from a pile of dinks to monster perch back in the 80's? Stock more tigers and move the size limit to over 40" so they can chow on those perch. In the mean time I'll be on Oneida.

Seriously it was nothing to catch legal sized Tigers,Walleyes and 12-14 in perch look at the state stockings over the early 80s and late 70s and compare to now. N.A.T.T Rules!!!

Fished all day yesterday with papacoondog. Fished the sunken island for the first time this season. Caught and marked fish all day. Moved around all day to locate the bigger YP, but could not get away from the dinks. Caught nothing over 10" and kept 7 YP in the 8" range, C&R everything else. Saw some bigger YP in our holes but the dinks would beat them to the bait every time. Had a solid 11" of ice where we were. Drove the ATV from south of Hyder Creek all the way to Sunken island. Nice ride, but there were some larger snow drifts in the middle of the lake that took us by surprise. Weekend is looking nice for some hardwater fishing, good luck to all headed to Cando.

We had non stop action today for a couple hours. My brother did 18 perch in 15 minutes. Now these are not Oneida Lake perch, but for a lake that has been producing alot of 6 and 7 inchers. We got into 9 to 11 eleven inchers today.
For me it's 1 1/4 hour to Oneida and just under an hour to Canadarago. I mark a few fish at Oneida and have never gotten into the eyes. At least I have a lot of action and am able to bring home a meal or two.

I agree with Filet. Cando was great to fish 5 or 6 years ago and I seen first hand what this forum did to it. You couldn't find a spot to park at the boat launch and south shore parking on the road was bad locals griped about it. Slowly the same thing is happening to Oneida. Parking lots are filling more and quicker than I've ever seen. That's why I don't post very often anymore. I still have my freinds that we share info together, but there are so many lurkers on this site that are just a sponge for info. I still enjoy visiting IS everyday and know alot of guys on here, but alot of those that I fish with have slowed down with the pics and stuff. I do still enjoy Cando, beautiful lake that everywhere you want to go is within walking distance. I'll get there this weekend ;)

Wow was that a wasted trip. A couple bites from small walleye. Left at about 2 and saw a few others leaving from the beach landing parking lot. Not worth a second try as far as I can tell.

Fred the unemployed fishermen of the 90's that used to sell there catch are the guys that killed this lake. I will agree there was a spell 6 to 8 years ago that there was some good perch, but not like in the 80's and 90's.
We had non stop action today for a couple hours. My brother did 18 perch in 15 minutes. Now these are not Oneida Lake perch, but for a lake that has been producing alot of 6 and 7 inchers. We got into 9 to 11 eleven inchers today.
For me it's 1 1/4 hour to Oneida and just under an hour to Canadarago. I mark a few fish at Oneida and have never gotten into the eyes. At least I have a lot of action and am able to bring home a meal or two.
I guess I just like fishing at Kowboy's back door.
when I was coming there years ago I never crushed them but they ran from 11.5 -14 inches and i measured one for a guy there that was 16" on the button , man was that a monster , it's about 90 miles one way for me , where Oneida is about 65-70 round trip, it would be cheaper to by seafood LOL

You have that right Slamboney they still stock Tigers but the # are down back in the 80s there were very large perch in there, never any dinks. T he state should go back to the old formula of 6 Tigers an acre I think the perch population would be kept in check. Seriously it was nothing to catch legal sized Tigers,Walleyes and 12-14 in perch look at the state stockings over the early 80s and late 70s and compare to now. N.A.T.T Rules!!!
DEC quit stocking tigers last year because people weren't having much success catching them so they quit the program right when we need tigers the most. ??? Thanks region 4

Filet lived on this lake my whole life and have seen it boom around the time I was in the service 82 to 86, when I came out we were catching jumbo perch and throwing back eyes 18 inches now and I say now in the past few yrs I don't even go out my door to fish the lake, kinda depressing to see the lake go down, that's why I drive the hour and half to fish oneida

what are fall fish? look like what we used to call river chubs on the susquehanna.caught one through ice on goodyear this year along with a 10 to 12 inch shiner.some of those river chubs get up around 20 inches or so in the sus.any opinions on how sno on ice affects the fishin.

It's too bad..... Cando and Otsego both beautiful, productive fisheries are in so much trouble. Each w/ their own problems. How can we as fishermen petition DEC to start restocking Tigers and Walleyes or reintroduce a forage base to Otsego? It's a helpless feeling watching Otsego slide down hill and seeing Cando produce stunted Perch when they have so much potential.

I couldn't agree more and if something can be done, I'm on board.otsego fish are starving and need something to eat and Cando needs a good perch clean out.maybe a few large derbies where it's weight based.

What's ironic is both lakes are having problems because of invasive alewifes. Otsego needs more and Cando has too many :-\

I agree there is way to many small perch in cando but what can we as fisherman do I honestly think if we truly want to get a grip on the problems at hand, we need to get ahold of the lake association and schedule a meeting with fishermen,lake association members and regional fisheries biologists and hammer out a management plan that good for the lake,
otsego and canadrago both we as fishermen may not be satisfied with the outcome for a few years or we may be overly joyed only time can tell.
I'm not nearly as old some guys heck I know fillet is close to a million heck he remembers when cando had megladons swimming around in there lmao sorry Freddy I been to nice lately....
I can remember going smelt dipping in both lakes back in the 80's and in otsego in the early 90's and both lakes were very very health back then and that was with a lot of market fishing going on now we have smaller bag limits no market guys and worse conditions I'm all for helping our lakes become healthy once again....killer out

I started fishing it about 20 years ago and it was good, big perch , last 2 times there it was a weekend and there must have been 200 guys on it , that lake can't take that kind of pressure . and KB I can't blame you for heading west , and you and your better half are doing very well

Lake Assn director here. Meetings to create a Watershed management plan that includes all issues pertaining to the entire 50 mile watershed have been advertised around the area since September. In fact, we have one coming up on Feb 26, at 6 pm, at the RS Vet's Club to discuss the problems and possible solutions to the various plant and animal invasive species. All are welcome, I'd love to meet some of you there!

Get DEC involved and start a creel survey the more input the better they will work with you. It's a shame I have not been to that lake in 20 yrs I will remember it as it was.

System...Perchpopper & I will be there. Looking forward to meeting you. As a retired career DEC employee I know how things are now within the agency (bare bones budget) and am not optimistic they will provide much assistance. I hope I am wrong.

I have been working with some great DEC guys out of Stamford, and they've always been in close contact with me, inviting me on every fish survey of the lake, sending me an and all data, asking advice and experience for stocking programs, etc. DEC's doing the best they can, it's up to concerned and motivated outdoorsmen to do the real work.

I bet if all the DEC permits were granted, a fund drive could drum up the $ needed to get the stocking program going.

Dec stocks 30-40 walleye fry each year, and is willing to re-start the tiger stocking if there is community support. that is a controversial topic around town, many of the older fishermen think the tigers will eat all the big perch and are actually causing the dink explosion. I disagree, as does a head DEC biologist. I have had somewhat of a hard time getting the needed community support DEC needs, I have sent my personal letter to them asking for the stocking program to be re-instatated, and the Lake Assn is ready to as an organization, if I can show good support. You guys might be just the ticket.
I'd love to hold a meeting of just us anglers to hammer out our thoughts and ideas about the lake, no official meeting with members, etc, just us to present a unified front. If there's interest, I can book a date at the Vet's Club any time.

There's a lot of truth in strength in numbers so the more people we get to show up at the vets club will or should send a message . Being a land owner on the lake i'll talk to the ones i know . System is very dedicated to the lake association so lets get together and give him a little backing and see what happens.

I love tiger muskies! I think introducing a strong population would thin out the herd of dink perch. There's just so many perch in that lake that I doubt tiger muskies would have a negative affect on the population. Jumbo perch would definitely increase, with the increasing lack of pressure from all the dinks that would be eaten by the tiger muskies.

Definitely support this! I haven't been on the ice at Cando in probably three years because of all the dinks. Just isn't worth weeding through all of them for a few keepers. Tigers would definitely feed on those dinks and it would be nice to be able to fish decent perch within a twenty minute drive, even if it takes a few years.

For Sunken Island you would park at Baker's Beach on the west side. The island is basically straight out where all the people will be fishing. A couple hundred yards maybe.

PerchPrince, good to hear from you! The lake has over 12" ice and a lot of heavy snow, and this year has generally been considered to be slower than usual as far as bigger fish go. The cold and wind aren't helping either. You coming up in the spring?

An aquarium can only support x-amount of inches of fish, 100 little ones or 10 bigguns. Need some thinning for sure. From what I've seen at the lake you could net/trap millions of the little guys.PP

This is primarily an educational forum, with great presenters from SUNY Oneonta and the Biological Field Station. There will, of couse, be ample time for public discussion because the purpose of these meetings is to create an all inclusive plan for the future of our lake. We could really use a strong presence of fishermen there! PM me for any questions or a phone#!

Classlessness strikes again. >:( Found these lovely gifts strewn about on the ice. Cigarette butts were everywhere, picked 'em out of every hole I came across. Luckily I had my garbage bag with me and the mess has been discarded properly. I could rant and go on and on about this kind blatant disrespect of our natural resources, but I won't. I would just like to say, if you are gonna come to Cando to fish and leave trash all over, you are not welcome here.

This is a great lake. If I didn't live 5 hours away I'd be there. High attendance from the fishing community would be impressive and could do a lot of good.

The lake meeting was a big success, and I want to give big thanks to Perchpopper, FLoatman, Papacoondog and LilCoondog for making the trip out in that awful weather. I think I can speak for everyone there when I say that even as veteran anglers, we all learned a lot about invasive species and how to prevent them, which HAS to be our top priority. This meeting was only the first step in the solution - from here on out, it's going to take time, $, effort, and dedication to get the word out about how fragile our lake ecosystems really are, and get EVERY boat that comes into the lake inspected for invasives. THank you to all who are as concerned as we are!
PS - I know you'll love this one - According to a top level invasive researcher, the best way to control the Eurasian Milfoil that is clogging our lake is to STOCK MORE WALLEYE!!! (which eat the fish that eat the Milfoil-eating bugs)
I am already preparing a petition to explain this, with evidence, to DEC, and to ask them to not only continue their annual 40,000 fingerling stocking, but DOUBLE IT. I'll bet there's some guys here who would be willing to sign that petition, right?

Ryan....I talked with him afterward about that. Specifically, it is the panfish that are very effective at eating the macroinvertebrates right off the milfoil. He also said since there's not enough of the bugs the plants proliferate & you end up with an overpopulation of stunted fish, i.e. what has happened to the perch. So, I guess it doesn't matter whether its walleye or tiger musky, we need more predator fish. To protect these predators to a certain degree from over harvest it is my opinion that we also need a higher minimum length, a slot length and/or a reduced bag limit. I know alot of guys would object to that but we've all witnessed the intense pressure on the walleye when word gets out that there's keepers to be had.

I totally agree about the higher limits. In addition to more walleye stocking, I personally am pushing to change the Cando limit from 5 fish over 15" back to the normal (Oneida, Ontario, etc) 3 fish over 18". But I realize that is not popular with all fishermen, so I'll have that on a separate petition, and those who want may sign it, those who disagree can skip it

In my personal opinion the tiger stocking should be avoided.yea they will eat the hell out of small perch but when they get 25 or 30 inches, which they do early here with my cousins 52 incher, those small fish will no longer be the target and small walleye larger perch and the bass will be on the menu.seems like more walleye is the way to go.slots would be very beneficial.

Fished the lake on Friday about 300 yards south of boat ramp, nothing. Talked to a brother and sister on way off and they were jigging up small perch about 100 yards south of ramp, no keepers. Nice weather onlty good thing of the day.

Hit the lake yesterday afternoon. 3 inches of water over 20+ inches of ice. Hand augering took a nice bit of effort. Some previously drilled holes had water seeping into them, enlarging them and swirling rapidly around the hole, very weird phenomenon. Caught dink after dink in 4 foot of water. Not big fish, really nice for the kids.
