Smelting Camps info
« on: Jan 07, 2012, 01:39 PM »
The river finally ran enough ice to close itself up somewhat above the bridge in Gardiner.  As you can see by this picture taken today,  It's a long ways from fishable.  Worthings doesn't have any shacks out yet where they would normally have 40 or 50 out by now.

The river cam may not be the best indicator for the smelt camps in Randolph.  Though the cam shows it open, I just drove by the smelt camp (5 minutes ago), and the river is totally locked up right there.  I doubt that it's great ice, but locked up is locked up, and if it can stay that way through tomorrow, the cold that's coming could have the shacks out there soon!

Seems weird to think that we might all have to make a trip to Canada to find ice this winter!

Does anyone know if they are still open or shut down. The phone number I have from last year is the same one that is on the Maine.gov web page but it is turned off. Any info would be helpful.
