Need help from ALLAGASH tipup users - or old pro's.
« on: Jan 29, 2009, 09:24 AM »
Guys, I'm new to ice fishing last year. This year I bought my own gear.

I have been out 4 times this year in PA.

I go out with a bunch of local guys each weekend.

Anyway here is my trouble.  I have the ALLAGASH tip us.

This has the metal reel with a metal lag bolt as the Axel.

Now when I pull my tip us out of the hole and set it on the ice It freezes up and wont spin.

So last week I used some lithium grease w/ Teflon spray I had.

This didn't seem to solve the problem.

It seems to me, that this might be the problem.  The lag bolt (AXEL) is completely threaded,
when the water in the hole in the reel (where the lag go's through) freezes it basically wants to start threading it's self.

Would a lag bolt with no threads in the middle help?

I really could use some good sound advise.

i have those tip-ups and know what you mean. i just turn the reels with my fingers back and forth a couple of times and they are good to go.don"t know of any product that will stop this. try backing off the wing nut a half turn, it night be a little too tight.

Thanks for the reply brother.

I keep the wing nut very very loose.

I'm working on them now,  I have two in a bucket out side to test them.

I was thinking about a heat shrink on the lag. I tried that but the bold was a little to thick with the heat sink.

I think if I could make metal and plastic (heat shrink) this might be the ticket.

I'm still open to any suggestions.

PS, I love the look of my Allagash, Top notch.

But all the guys I fish with use these cheap green tip-up and never have any trouble.
Go-figure.
