Post by: fishloverMi on Dec 30, 2019, 11:39 AM
Are burbot and dogfish the same fish?

I have read that burbot is an excellent eating fish.  Are dogfish edible?

No, they are different. The body shape is pretty similar, but burbot are basically a freshwater cod. Dogfish are more closely related to gar. Burbot=Good Eating. I've never heard of anyone eating dogfish.

Also, forgot to mention, I've heard dogfish have a lot of mercury in them since they are usually a top predator. I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new fish, but one more reason to stay away.

Dogfish...also called Bowfin. My dad told me a story years ago about his uncle that owned a small hog farm. Told him "Even the pigs won't eat a dogfish". Enough said.

Caught a 7#plus dogfish once. Left it on the ice. Three days later it was untouched with not even a coon or crow track near it. That oughta tell ya something about it's fitness for the table. Boatload of fun to catch though...  ;D

I have caught dogfish in summer. They fight like gladiators, amazing. We just let them go again. No good to eat.

Yep, exactly what Slab said!

They couldn’t be any more different. Complete opposite. Google it!

I've heard dogfish make decent table fare. Have never caught one before myself so I don't know, but I would try it.

An interesting part to dogfish or the bowfin is that they are the last living species of a genus of fish going back to prehistoric times. They are the only freshwater fish with a bony structure in their heads called a gular plate which most enthusiasts believe was part of a defense structure that prevented larger predators from being able to bite through the head. Tough fish... when I was in college and part of a shocking boat fish survey in NY, we shocked up one that was just a few ounces off the state record, biggest I had and have seen since.

Absolutely NOT!  Burbot are the ultimate predator.  Fun to catch and could possibly be the best tasting fish you'll ever eat.  I love perch, gills and walleye,  burbot are completely different.  it's better than the best cod you've had in the restaurant.  I get pissed when I see them laying on the ice,  people thing they are trash.  they look ugly and they are slime balls,  but whoa man,  I wish i could catch them all year.

That's exactly why I bring butter and a pot to boil water with me every time I go out for Ling. Right after catching the fish, slice off a cube of meat and toss it into boiling water till it floats, then dip into butter and its the best poor mans lobster you'll ever have!  ;D

I’ve eaten bowfin before. Gotta cook them immediately, as in straight out of the water. They get mushy even just on the ride home.

Me and a buddy got a couple many years ago. We got back to the dock where his dad was burning leaves. We tossed them in the fire. A half hour later, their gills were still moving!! I would guess you can't over cook them!  ;D
