don't over think it, a small firetiger patern jig and three to four spikes should do the trick. If you want to get fancy a swedish pimple tipped with a shiner's head- good luck
-
Thanks for info cant wait to get my son out there
-
I just got an lx5 and am dying to try it out before my trip to onieda next month.i was going to go tomorrow but don't think I can handle the cold.i have a 2 man flip but traded my truck in for a car, maybe should have kept the truck.
-
Fished on the 30th, inafternoon for 3 hrs or so. Ice was 4' solid straight out in middle of harbor. Managed over 30 perch - 8 keepers over 9' with one 10' being the biggest. Used fresh emeralds. Camera showed many perch, bluegill, a calico a couple big largemouth, one small northern and one giant pike that made everything scatter. There were a few smelt around, not a bad day for SBH>
-
Hey ive got a cousin out that way who wants to hit the ice. If I were to make the hour trip with my gear any idea the easiest bait shop to find coming from Rochester? thanks in advance.

Sounds like better fishing there this year hope it just gets better .
-
I'm heading out there tomorrow it's my first trip out for the season. I've heard a lot of talk about staying to the left and avoiding the area by the pier I'm just trying to confirm the reports

Went down today to check things out. They were fishing by the long dock in front of Dug's Dive. 1 hut was outside of the marina.
-
Thanks for the info hopefully I can hook into something
-
I have been out to the SBH three times this year so far and today was the worst. No wonder why a friend of mine calls it the zoo. All kinds of open ice and people want to set up less than 15 ft away from you and they break out their new power augers and have to drill 5-10 holes to check it out. Please remember to use a little common courtesy and sportsmanship. OK, getting off my soap box now, tight lines everyone.
-
I usally wait till 8 inchs 2 bring mine out but boy they sure works wonders when we go up north 18 to24 inchs!
-
I was out yesterday too. Had to move just cause these three guys set up right on top of us practically. And the gas augers are a little over kill!!
-
Hi im new to this just trying to get my post in I do see guys fishing out there what kind of bait
ive been having real good luck with jigs and shiners
-
Im going there sunday hopefully we wont get too overrun with people gotta try out the new 30 in UL celsius boiling point combo
-

Gotta get yourself about 8 cheap tipups and surround yourself with em and just stick em in the hole u dont even have to set em just use em like posted signs...if your spot aint posted the herd will crowd right in
-
Have any of you guys fished sand piles or union ship canal? Curious about access and it's right around the corner?
-
I fished unuin ship before they redid it it should be safe by now but dont trust my word and the sand piles are usually ready around the same time as the boat harbor but watch the edges there always sketchy
-

If you try the sandpiles be wary of where you drill holes, any sand on or in the ice and it will take about 3 holes before you destroy your auger blades.
-
Thanks guys. How was the bite today? Seen lots of "ice fishers" as my wife likes to say @ sbh.
-
Going on Sunday can't wait
It will be my first time out this Sunday (tomorrow) as well I drove by today about 4pm there must have been 30+ huts out there, stopped at Gander Mtn picked up some spikes.
-
Who caught the biggest 4" perch today? :woot:
-
Lol More like 500 4" sun fish Woohoo, but did land a 18 1/2" pike ;D
-
What do you guys think would be best decision, toss up between sbh and Wilson tomorrow morning? .?

Any better ideas....? Lol.Didn't want to travel too far but if I can have a Chance at some better fish might be worth it
-
IMO wilson if you have a good flasher and patience you will or should get better fish
-
Thanks,

Fished sbh last night and has nothing not even a bit and try 5 different spots also I try every bait in my bucket. I try waxies, gulp alive, and power bait I guess I should have got some minnows. Am I ding something wrong?
-
How is the ice in the ship canal? Never fished it how is the fishing in there?

I tried fishing last night as well "I was the one drilling holes over by the pipes" I didn't catch anything… The night bite just seems to be off. Morning and day time seem to be the best.

Was there last night as well, was in close to shore by ramp. Managed 4 dink gills and a 8" perch with the biggest belly I have ever seen...full of eggs I would guess. Had to work HARD just for them. Used sm chartruse jig with 3 spikes..they were laying on the bottom, they wanted it brought up 4" then dead sticked. Thats the best tactic I found all night. Like anything work hard at it, change bait and presentation and see how the react.
-
Fished the SBH today and it was sure busy, seen a lot of people catching fish but far and few on keepers. caught a nice 28" pike and 1 nice perch... seems to be a great time for young anglers.
-
was there sunday caught about 40-50 keeper gills and about 10 keeper perch almost got in one smallmouth got off at the hole probably going back this upcoming weekend idk yet looks like the weathers gonna be warmer then usual but the ice is anywere from 6 to 9 inches there and with this nice blizzard should bring it up to about 11 12 inches by friday hopefully it wont deteriorate the ice too bad
-
Sooo how did the ice handle the blizzard?
-
I dont kbow im probably going saturday before it get too warm
-
May try getting out tomorrow to check it out
-
May try getting out tomorrow to check it out
thanks let me know
-
Fished SBH from 9-2 and caught fish pretty much nonstop but of course they were so small that when you hooked a 6" perch you almost couldnt help but think it most certainly should go in the bucket...however the weather was perfect water clarity is improving id say about 4ft visibility...was able to get the woman out for a couple hours to enjoy some sunshine and a little action...patience is a virtue and think big and you may get a nice treasure every so often. ...ice was pretty uniform from freezer queen wall to deep inside harbor at a steady 8"..little slick in spots bring creepers.
-
Thx 4 the info
-
going in am. been good 3 of last 4 times out. we will see. wanted to hit Irondequoit on sat. but doesn't look good.
-
do you thing the boat harbor will hold through this saturday and sunday?
-
should be good if not too many people on it. Makes a mess on refreeze. Heading there in 20 min.
-
do you thing the boat harbor will hold through this saturday and sunday?
It will hold just watch the shore ice.
-
If it made it thru that wind it will make it thru this weekend there is 9 plus inches of ice in most spots just watch shore ice
-
thx 4 the info guys gonna try the union ship canal instead from 6 to round 11 buddy of mine said they were nailin walleye and steelys there before the storm and yesterday
-
How was the ice in the canal, wanted to go today but chose to goose hunt one last time, plan to head there tomorrow.
-
fish it this am Thu the rain till 12 noon ice was still seven in went I left bigfish fishing was GOOD!!!!!!!!
-
Shore ice was still good?
-
Shore ice was still good?
Seemed ok when I left today at 430 but I would still be cautious on sunday as it was ankle deep of water 5 yards out
-
Fished along Freezer Queen until the wind and rain started yesterday afternoon. Caught perch all day in 10 to 12 '. Brought home a dozen over 10". Caught quite a few that were about 2" though.
-
Has anybody been to the other side if freezer queen thanks Bigfish
-
I spoke with a few guys that were on their way back from there last week. They had some nice perch. They said the bite was slow and you had to weed through the small ones. They were using spikes.
-
Seemed ok when I left today at 430 but I would still be cautious on sunday as it was ankle deep of water 5 yards out
thank you!
-
union ship canal was good 8 to 10 inches off were we were we were catching some decent perch the one guy we were with got a nice 24 inch steely on a minnow head gl all stay safe im going back out this weekend
-
Thanks Iceman for an update, I will be there probably Saturday morning. If you have any more it is greatly appreciated
-
Ship canal is good, a lot of pressure cracks and slop on shore ice from snow. Caught handful of dink perch a gill handful smelt and two nice 10" perch
-
two of my buddies were there two kept two steelies and 22 perch  bigfish
-
I was there from 8-130 in the blue otter hut, a lot of bait fish by where I was.
-
I drove by SBH yesterday seen a handful of guys out there, a lot of water on top, one guy made the phrase that it looked like swiss cheese out there.
-
3rd times a charm
-
Fished 8am-2pm today a bit breezy this morning then it settled down some ...ice was slick as baby poops ice was in great shape still 8" all black...for me the fish were fin-i-cky but managed to finesse em a bit to grab on..buddy lost a huge steelie after about 15min. 24" ul with 3lb test was no match for this fish but my buddy proved to be a worthy adversary 1-0 mr. Steelie...had em at the hole once and mr. Steelie took the fight to a whole new level..all in all a fun day and kept a few for a snack.
-
I will be going in the am down there just put some screws on the bottom of my boots 4 cleats and made a new spud bar out of an old jackhammer tip and a broom handle lol i know sounds ghetto but at least it will work just got a new jig kit in the mail for steelys hopefully we can get some out of there will keep you all updated!
-

They are definitely there ive caught more than a few over the years and ive never targeted them...caught em on hook and minnow and tiny jig with a spike and everything in between...pike are there to be had as well but ive never seen any real gators but im sure they gotta be down there.
-
My buddy and I were there from about 830 - 12 until we got blown off the ice. We were off of the pipes. Caught a few dink perch and bluegills. Lost one nice perch at the hole when my jigging rap got hooked on the ice. Probably 10 or so inches. The ice was about 8-9 inches and real slick. Forgot my creepers so it was a tough walk. Good time until the wind really picked up.
-
I thought my tent was gonna break, i was also on the pipe side. slick and windy I made sure to set up on a snow drift so I didn't blow away, managed a small pike and a few blah blah blahs. Ice was great, is therefishing to be had on the outside of the break wall? Is the ice anywhere near good? It seems like it would be great to be able to set up some tip ups and shines on the further out wall...... Fun day, I also learned how to remove a gamakatsu from deep within my thumb!
-
....... is therefishing to be had on the outside of the break wall? Is the ice anywhere near good? It seems like it would be great to be able to set up some tip ups and shines on the further out wall......
it's not recommended to fish that channel between the inner and outer wall or even try and go past the break wall. believe it or not but there is current in these areas. remember, it's not far from the mouth of the mighty Niagara river. if it was safe or even great fishing, you would see people fish those areas over the years on hard water.
-
Yea I figured! I went to chatauqua yesterday and had more fun at sbh to be honest
-
Went today got a bunch of small fish and one keeper
-
Fished today dawn till 10 - kept 3 9"perch. Just enough for a nice fish sandwich . Wind was howling early and got stronger as the morning went on. Ice was solid 8-10"
-
I also went Sunday morning. Was on the ice at 7:30 till 9:30 before the wind picked up. Didn't get a nibble so I decided to pack up and head home. Little slushy by the boat ramps.
-
Are weeds still an issue currently?
-
Not at all their all matted down at the bottom
-
Always wondered about between the breakwalls, and also just outside the 2nd wall. Caught walleye out there during open water. Drive by this area everyday, and seems iced up to near Peace Bridge. Seems there would be safe ice outside those walls if there is 8" of ice in the harbor, maybe not with the current though. Might have to check next week if sturgeon pt. is not an option. NOT RECOMMENDIN ANYBODY CHECK IT OUT!

Well, if you do go and check it out, let the coast guard know so they can find you...... Just because fishing is good there in the summer, doesn't mean it's good in the winter. fish migrate. I've seen that ice in channel go from 6"+ to nothing in 3 days, regardless of the temps. Break wall area is NOT like sturgeon point! As I stated in previous post about this, if it was ever safe at all, people would be fishing it over the years. Just because you see ice somewhere, doesn't mean it's safe!!!
-
I wouldn't go out by the break wall but I have fished on the north side of the elevators off of Galligher Beach. Sometimes you get nice perch in there but as always spud, spud, spud.
-
Had a heck of a time finding this 6 pages back. Thanks for the info about outside the 2nd wall. Just wondered if anybody ever fished out there before was planning on keeping close to wall. So guessing pretty good current there, and Sturgeon Pt., and Hamburg will be an option very soon anyway.
Some of my friends did good between the first, and 2nd walls north of harbor, but it was like 15 years ago. We used to fish by the big ship south side of the elevators. Never got anything real big, but seemed to do better than the harbor.
8 a.m. 2 huts at harbor, and 1 in ship canal. Ice will be getting a lot thicker supposed to be cold until the superbowl.
-
I spudded my way out towards the elevators by Southend Marina off of Gallagher beach. I drilled a hole and there was 8" of the hardest, blackest ice I've seen all year. I went out about 100 yds but have no doubt it is good all the way out to the elevators. I was on the north side off the beach.
-
Is it any deeper out of the beach/around the elevators?
-
It`s been a few years actually since the ship was there. I believe it`s a lot deeper, but don`t think the fishing is drastically better than the harbor. The ship was where the tug boats are now. South side of elevators. Never saw anybody fish between the elevators and the harbor. Old timer on here told me it was just sand, but never investigated.
-
I wish you could get between the breaker walls/outside the breaker wall
-
Is it any deeper out of the beach/around the elevators?
It is deeper the closer you get to the elevators on the sides as well as in front of them. On all sides the farther you get from the elevators the shallower it is. I have caught some real big perch in open water and thru the ice there. In the summer you get walleyes in front of them.
-
So you believe ice is good around the elevators?
-
Careful just passed the wall there is a strong current the ice doesn't get very thick there, sometimes I've seen open water in that area even after long cold spells
-

If you're on the north side of the elevators BE VERY CAREFUL.. The current comes in around the point and the ice there is usually not good. A few years ago a buddy of mine spudded his way out there and the ice went from 7" to an inch in ten feet. Don't know if that's the case every year, but BE VERY CAREFUL.
-
I've been out there several times over the years and always approach it with caution. The ice can be inconsistent. I don't take it for granted but if the ice is good I'm not going to be at home on the couch either.
-

x2, there is a very strong current once you get to the end of the grain elevator
-
AON south side of elevators should be good, and a poster above said 8 inches of hard ice. If you go past the elevator into the main channel or the north side of elevators sounds like you get current in there, and ice could vary. Fished the south side many times where the tug boats are now right next to elevators.

thank you, iv heard a lot of guys fishing around the grain mills I just never tried it, maybe this weekend
-
south side of grain mills is the best spot, and safest, in that area. I tried off the beach a few years ago but that's all shallow and sandy, not even worth the time. As I've stated before, and as others stated, the channel area is NOT an ideal place to ice fish due to current. Just because guys fish out of hamburg beach or sturgeon point, doesn't mean the ice is the same out by or past the break walls. You crazies that want to try have been warned..... :nono:
-
Seen a few guys in between the boats next to the grain mill today was wondering how the ice and fishing was out there?
-
Are the smelt in thick yet?
-
Does anyone know how the fishing is inside the marina at sturgeon point
-
Not sure but I do know that guys are getting out to the perch grounds, There are a few Sturgeon Pt threads if you search it.
-
Ill be in harbor tommorow. Ill let you all know what I catch. I used to be on this site when it ffirst started years ago. Message me for catch. I don't remeber what board to use????
-
Hows the bite been in the harbor?
-
hi whats the best bait for the small boat harbor.
-
Spikes and minnows emeralds. Was out lasr fri.caught 2-300 fish 1 perch at 12" everything else was under 6". I wish they would put a 9" size limit on erie and upper river waters. So many giys keep small 6" and under perch.
-
A 9in size limit is a good idea don't know why people would waste their time cleaning dinks
-
Anyone got a report from today? Just wondering how much snow is on the ice after the storm today. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Deep snow is tough for me to get through since I got hurt a few years back. I was looking to head down in the morning and wanted to know what conditions to expect. Thanks again.
-
A 9in size limit is a good idea don't know why people would waste their time cleaning dinks
A 9" law on perch wouldn't affect the size in the sbh, the small ones come in and the big ones stay out, at least %98 of the time
-
The little ones would eventually be bigger. I have caught at times 30 or so perch iout of their in the12-14" size you got to move and follow them. Biggest I ever got 16"s by grain mill's. Usually in march.I've already seen some 12"rs come out this year. But only a few it's still early to get the bigger ones.I usually get them with a minnow on a hoik or a small ant jig green with a spike. An old timer there uses a rapala ice lure with spikes on the treble hook on the lure and he does well too.if you fish the harbor don't go were everyone is.THAT DOSNT MEAN THIER CATCHING FISH...Remember were you are.for some reason when the smelt are really thick in there so are the bigger perch I've noticed this threwout the years.coul you imagine what a awsome perch fishery it would be if all those little ones were always put back..
-
Has anyone fished between the grain mills and the old steel plant or down the canal to the old steel plant?

The number of small fish does not affect the number of big fish on a bay off of a system as big as Erie by any means. You couldn't keep enough small perch to hurt the population or increase the fish size of that place. The big fish come in when they come in. Keeping small ones neither hurts or helps the average size. It would if food or space was limited but that's not the case.
-
Really, I remember Fishing chataqua and people were keeping any size crappie like people do perch you could bring garbage cans full home. Now look at it.I'm just saying in a lake that size with the ability of perch to get that big and they do. It would make a huge difference. Look at silver lake most people put back perch 8"s or less and its not uncommon to cath 2-3 pound perch. And plenty over the 9" mark. But hey to each their own.
-
When it comes to lake erie just look up set commercial harvest rate lake wide on perch and Walleye. Last yrs quota was 12.1 million pounds of perch and 12.237 million walleye. So is keeping or throwing back a dink perch gonna hurt it? . I'll post when I hear the date the biologist will be at south towns this year any with lake Erie questions should go you'll learn a lot about it's ecosystem and fish numbers. Between 4 of us last yr 1000 walleye caught and kept from eastern basin with a charter capt being one at over 400 eyes. The lake is healthy and abundant with fish. I can't remember figures on numbers of fish but walleye population is within a 100 million give or take with higher perch numbers. I'm sure a another south towns member is also on this site and will know exact numbers .

Do you realize how big the lake is and how many perch are in lake Erie, if 10,000 dinks were released instead of kept in the sbh it wouldn't do a damn thing to the population, there's probly 10,000 perch killed by predators every hour in the lake, I'm not saying I keep small perch but to say your theory will work is incorrect.
-
I ment Seneca lake in my last post.

What were the commercial harvests back 20+ years ago ? Do the commercial harvest rates you reference imply commercial fishing is good or bad for the lake ? Here's a pic out of the scrapbook from the 'ole days just before my father pulled out the burlap sacks .. Before the Southtowner's got involved ..
(http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz12/jackiebushman/yellows.jpg) (http://s809.photobucket.com/user/jackiebushman/media/yellows.jpg.html)
-
I do not know those numbers from 20 yrs ago but if a fisherie couldn't handle a harvest they would cut it back. I hsve to say nice catch there. Were those caught out of Buffalo then? What was the limit per man then? I can't tell you if commercial fishing is good or bad but the lake handles it no problem it seems. The point i was making is fishermen aren't even going to put a dent in it's fish population. Also things are setting up right for a great spawn this yr with the ice cover. More ice = higher hatch due to water temp creek run off and silt. Cold water keeps fish from spawning early so creeks flush out with high water before temps reach spawning temperate zone. So eggs don't get silted in. In theary 3 yrs from now the numbers of 16 inch fish should be high.
-
Jackie bushman actually real impressed with that pic and its age because it is a great example of this lakes resilience. Go back to the late 70s when the waters were almost dead and dead fish all over. I was young but remember the news feeds. The color of the water was disgusting to say the least. Erie was almost wrote off but she rebounded strong obviously stronger than i had ever known. I think now she just has natural cycles which will be up and down, but the invasive species will play a big role both good and bad. I was amazed the first perch i saw puke up zebra muscles and bellies full if gobies in other species. As the lake adapts fishing will always be good I believe
-
All this debate on having a size limit on perch so they will get bigger so you can get more big perch in the SBH is pure foolishness. Lake Erie is full of huge perch. The SBH is full of dinks. Why? Because the shallow waters with weeds are like nurseries where dinks live until they get bigger. That's why the Canadians have their fish sanctuary the other side of Point Abino. It's shallow over there too. That's where a lot of the spawning takes place and the juvenile fish tend to live until they get big enough to head out into the main lake and chase bigger prey. If the perch population in Lake Erie was low then some sort of restrictions would be in order but there is no shortage of perch out there now. If it makes you feel good to throw back the little ones, go ahead. Comparing perch in Lake Erie to calicoes in Chautauqua is not a valid comparison. Chautauqua is a much smaller system. Also the 25 fish limit is what really helped the calicoes come back. The old days of catching hundreds of them is what almost destroyed the population. If you want a good shot at catching bigger perch in the SBH use bigger bait and fish in the bay over by Freezer Queen. Big minnows under tip downs will produce more big perch. Or fish with a bigger jig. You can pull dinks out one after another with little jigs and grubs but the keeper ratio is about 1:50 . With the big minnows I typically can keep 1:10.

Went out twice over the last week.
Spent 3 hours with the son and a friend on Saturday Feb 1st only had 1 keeper - but it was the 1st time with the boy on hard water. He ended up wearing boots too small for his feet so they started getting cold so we had to head in early - went right to Gander Mtn and bought him a new pair to wear.
Spent 7 hours with a friend on Tuesday Feb 4th - had 5 keepers and a bunch of dinks during the 5 hours or so in the open area instead of the harbor itself. Moved into the harbor to where the crappies are usually caught and didn't have a bite the entire time (2 hours).
Ice was around 14 inches or so thick in both places, though I heard the ice "cracking" when I was in the harbor. Didn't see or feel any real movement or anything, and wind was only 3-4 mph when I heard the cracking sound, but I wasn't happy hearing those noises.
As a rookie on hard-water, what causes those sounds when the ice is clearly thick enough not to crack from my weight?
-
It is definitely making more ice! No, not from you.

It is making more ice. The ice that's there doesn't have anywhere to go so the popping and cracking is just the ice adjusting.
-
The ice is expanding and it is causing it to crack and make loud whomping noises. Don't worry it's safe.
-
Thanks.
Forgot to mention that I had 3 tip-ups setup on both Saturday and Tuesday with about 8 inch suckers and didn't get a hit on either day. Saw a guy on Tuesday with a nice pike but that's it.
How often are pike caught in SBH and is there something I should be doing?
Also - how many tip-ups are allowed per person? I think I heard you were allowed 5 tip-ups, 1 "dead-stick" and 1 jigging rod - is that correct?
thanks guys

You can have 5 tip-ups or tip-downs and 3 handlines (poles).

Thanks for the info !!

Also I believe the ruling is no more than 15 points on the tip ups. To explain, they are saying you are only allowed only one treble hook per tip up.

Not true.....
No person shall operate a tip‑up that has more than 5 lures or baits or a combination of both, or has more than 15 hook points in any combination of single, double or treble hooks.
Key word being "a"....

I don't think the people in the restaurant and the apartments surrounding the place would appreciate the garbage the ice men seem to leave behind (and the urinating right out in the open ), as so happens at small boat
-
I never leave garbage I hate when ppl do that's what will ruin things in long run anywhere and yea I could see peeing thing

LMAO ... I'm not saying it bothers me as I do it too, just that the restaurant has wedding parties and whatever else and the people in those condos may have issues with that. my point is, if it gets out of control, we will get the boot. there are already coded gates for the docks too, thus keeping people off the docks in the fall and spring. I'm guessing they are not too keen on people being on the ice there too. your better off staying at SBH. less chance of a problem
-
Jw if anyone goes there and small boat harbor has gates lake that also when the docks are in.

What he said ::)
-
I pee outside the hut at the sbh but the garbage people leave is unnecessary. Wasn't that many people there today and somebody threw all sorts of Timmy hos crap all over. Wasn't there that long but managed to get a few dink perch and pumpkin seeds.
-
Went out on harbor on Sunday morning at 7. No one there yet. Crossed old pier on north side of channel. tough drag over and many drifts. Well worth the trip. Fished 30' with emeralds and got 15 keepers. 2 were 12 plus and rest in the 11 range. Tossed backed about 40 dinks. Bite was generally lite, had to let them suck on minnow a bit and then hook them. Decided to walk around the pier on way back. Longer, but easier.
-
Guys,
If the garbage bothers you that much just bag it up and dispose of it when you get off the ice,I pick trash all the time and also about 20 miles of fishing line,it also emboldens me to speak up when I see guys leaving trash behind.
FN
-
Doorman what pier are you crossing??
-
The one on the right side of channel in front of the silos. Head out of the harbor go outside the first break wall. Go around the pier. It is much easier.
-
I tried out there on sat(2/15/14) could find fish to save my life. We tried all sort of lure/bait combos...nothing. Moved to around 10' of water and couldn't keep the dinks off the hook. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!!
-
He is in the freezer qeen inlet
-
Your talking the opposite side of freezer queen??
-
I think he's talking about over on the left by the grain towers. If you read my post I. Think you'll see what he is saying. If. I'm correct.
-
Good advice
-
I was at inlet between Nano Dynamics bldg. and grain silos on right side looking out to lake. Go out the channel out of harbor and go right over pier or around. I was in 30" of water.
-
I'm trying to picture your position. If I am standing in front of the silos, you're fishing on the right where the ship was inside the south gap.........?
-
that's not a grain silo. that's the old "freezer queen" factory. the only silo there is at south end marina near the south gap, where there is NO Nano dynamic building. he is talking about the small canal just north of the harbor between FQ and Nano
-

Exactly, we were in the canal between Nano and Freezer Queen toward the back end.

Does anyone know were to park by "union canal" just south of the small boat harbor?
-

From what i hear on the Union Canal thread is that you can park right next to the Father Baker Bridge. I guess theres a lot just off the road.
-
Few weeks ago we parked on road near the stairs"west side of 5" there's a lot there but only a few cars can fit. There was about 20 trucks parked on road and no one said anything near stairs if ya go to back there's.lot there too
-
A "lot" is giving it more credit than what it actually is...more like a patch with room to park maybe 5 trucks.. guys are parking alongside the road, and if you go under the Rt.5 bridge there is another patch for maybe like 5 or 6 cars
-

That patch you refer to is a New York style parking lot. Down in Florida a parking lot by the water can hold a lot of vehicles.
-
Thanks for the info. Anyone know how to drop down to the canal?
-

Walk down the stairs.
-
I'm still sketchy stay to the right cause there's a storm drain to left that has moving water! And the lot I ment was one way in back ofcannal. All the way east it has room for like ten I think but like I said in from ya can park on road we did and was fine. The one by stairs I never seen down to pavement haven't seen in summer yet but the got that no parking and handy cap it don't look like any reg if one or two in there
-
Hey how far of a walk is it to 30 foe from the harbor can someone explain how to get out there
-
Do I just walk around the wall and keep going I did stergeon a couple weeks ago a little to far for me from the looks of the harbor I see no reason why someone couldn't got out there but I've never done it and or been to the sbh so idk is it safe?

go back and read previous post in this thread on that subject... there's a reason no one goes out that way

Can anyone offer some insight on the ice conditions for small boat this Saturday. I'm hoping some of you with more ice experience than myself can make a prediction of how all this rain and warmth will effect ice.

With the amount of ice we have there it will be no problem getting out Saturday. Might be iffy near shore. Gonna tighten up after the weekend with colder temps coming :)

that ice is a whopping 16-18" thick. this little "warm-up" in the low 40s aint gonna hurt it. if any thing, all it's gonna do is make it into an ice rink after getting rid of the junk on top. shore ice is the only thing you have to watch out for. bring your cleats
-
we may lose some visibility, but that shouldn't hurt the fishing.
-
I'm curious to see how many more pike wonder in there closer to ice out/ spawn. The last 2 time I've been out I've got 2 pike landed with 2 or 3 lost to lack of leader. Seems like alot more in there this year and I'm glad this ice will last into march
-
Got that right!
-
Fished today with about 25 other people. One of the greatest days on the ice I've ever had. I brought out all of my gear and had a bunch of family and friends come out. All of the kids caught something, some of them were first timers. We had snacks, a heater and a huge wind break to keep us all out of that fridgid breeze. A big thank you to everyone else in the harbor who suffered through my near constant running of the gas auger. it didn't bother the fish under us at all but the noise is a bit much at that volume. I seriously drilled more than 20 holes. A big thumbs down to the NYS DEC website for having a near impenetrable puzzle for a licensing system. Most of the people who came had to go through a 45 minute process to be issued a number online. Any retailer like Dick's or Walmart informed them that the system is down and will be for the forseeable future. They better un***k themselves before April 1st.
-
Was there n it looked like you guys had fun. That's what its all about very nice of you to take the time an do it. Did not even really hear you I was at the end of the pier. From 9 to 2 got about 9 keepers n a lot of dinks. Again very kool of you taking the time ty.
-
I watche u set up that major wind break for a while, was wondering what the heck was ping on then I figured family even when I saw the kids sliding all over the ice. Great day on the ice.
-
I also seen the big group as I went out. figured it was a great family affair when I seen the kids playing. nice day to get 'em out for a day they can remember
-

Anybody fishing there anymore?
The best report you'll ever find is the one you make yourself. There are people fishing there. Not trying to be a smart a$$, just sayin'.
-
fished the slot near freezer queen yesterday for an hour or so and marked very few fish and the normal minnow and smelt life didn't seem to be there either. better off walking to the north side of the building.
-

warden was out today with a man who left his 6 person clam set up in the harbor and had it stolen. he said he thought sportsmen were honest.
-
Sportsmen are honest, Thiefs are not!
-
Thats south buffalo scumbags at there best ill kep a lookout
-
Well...that's a strange statement Guys from all over WNY fish the SBH.... YOU are from South Buffalo, why would you assume it's automatically someone from S.B. who took it????
-
Oh dear...This guy
-
Because its the closest place to there other then lackawanna and woodlawn so yea and im at least honest about my fellow neighbors
-
Sorry..I didn't see " detective" in your profile...my bad
-

SORRY, you should have seen it in mine PET Dec.!
-
i DATED two girls from south buffalo in my years coincidentally they were both pretty but they coincidentally both had hair that smelled like the laundry when you forget it in the washer for a couple of days you know that mildew smell so i just assumed they were all basement dwelling drunk chicks who pass out in the dirty laundry ::)
-
Hahaha :)
-
The guy with the 6 man hut has come into contact who has it and is getting it back tonight thanks to me and my uncle
-
good to hear he's getting it back. bet he doesn't leave it out again. nice job!!

You're lucky you dated two girls at all. I'm curious what thier olfactory memories are. ;D ;D ;D
-
Yea we found out he had 1800 $ worth of gear in there that got taken before the hut got removed
-
Good job Detective IceMan!!
-
$1800 ????? that's crazy :cookoo:
-
Yea we found out he had 1800 $ worth of gear in there that got taken before the hut got removed
some people are just born stupid.... in this day and age, you can't trust anybody anymore. Should've known better. Plus, why leave that stuff on small boat anyways. It isn't exactly a hot spot, unless you like 3" perch.
-
Glad he got it back. The guy was a genius for leaving it there full of gear to begin with. Maybe I'm just more paranoid because I live in s buffalo lol.
-
Apparently his truck broke down so he couldnt pick it up and yea 3 in perch is right
-
should have spent 900 on gear and the other 900 on the truck. i mean really, in today's day and age, how dumb can you be. just out of curiosity, did this guy have a flat screen in there or something, that's a lot of coin to keep on the ice in the dink capital of the lake
-
Lol agreed
-
This all sounds odd. What happened to all the red haired blue eyed beauties from the old 1st ward.....mmmm, Irish girls! Moved to the 'burbs!
-
Lol yup
-
The girls from the old first ward swear better and are tougher than most guys I know! If he's missing $1800 in gear - start there! They probably know all about it.
-
hows the water clarity there lately ? clear enough for sight fishing? i know the big perch start moving back in late in season along with a few crappie
-

I was there sunday and it was as clear as it could be.... of course with the warm up on Tuesday and Friday along with the rain, it could have changed
-
Anyone been in the harbor or ship canal lately? Looking to find some gills, or perch anyone had any luck?

Nobody on the Harbor when I drove by after work . I'm going to try there tomorrow for the last few hours of the day. Hope to find some bigger perch . The ice should be solid.
