Slip float between eyelets on ice rod

Just wondering if you guys ever saw this and what is the purpose?

I've seen it too, the only thing I can think is they use it for a strike indicator because the rod is too stout?

Very interesting.  I dont own one of these.  But I can't say I've seen one of those around the time I saw the one I saw.  I'm pretty sure it was a thill brand too.

we rig our autofisherman and slammer poles that way gives the fish a chance to run a little and get the bait before hook set

That makes sense.  So rather than feeling the rod tension the pull a little line first..

It's used on the Automatic Fisherman and similar rod holders to let the fish take line before the hook set.

You pull the float down to the ice, and when the fish takes the bait it has to pull the float back inline before the hook will set.

Light weight strike indicator and line feed.  I used that same deal with some light up bobbers for catfishing nights.  ;D  Only problem was line drag affected casting.  Then I used the clip hang on method instead that will sometimes send the light up bobber onto the bank.  If you're to close to the water's edge your bobber will go down river.
