I've been doing it since 1970 and the biggest thing is the way to cut holes. Gas, propane, electric and even hand augers have made it a lot easy. I remember the days spudding a hole open in 20 plus inches of ice. with homemade chisels workout and do it again the next day. we loved it

Shanties, electronics, improvements with augers and floatation suits has helped this Grumpy Old Man out on the ice... but the biggest innovations are Ice Shanty and its members. I have learned a lot and for sure I have spent a lot... of money on ice fishing!  ;D

jepik, congrats on your first 20 years and wishing you nothing but the best on your next 20 years!

Awesome George. Similar story, my brother got an 8" one armed bandit all bent up from our neighbor. I think that auger is still running. Throttle freezing on that thing was also good fun!

Congrats on 20 years.

15 years for me on here, I procrastinated for a few years... but have been ice fishing since I was a kid. We use to use a ax to chop a hole thru the ice and used our fishing poles to fish.

You are correct, the Gear and the way we fish has come a long ways

17 years here, but I have gained so much more from this site, than probably 3 or 4 others I've been on. By far my favorite site!

My 20 year anniversary on here is a month away on 1/13/2023. I also have observed a lot of changes in the sport since I started it in the 80's, however I have resisted adopting most of the new gear and techniques. The only modern advances that I have adopted are 1.) Portable shelter and 2.) fluorocarbon line for leaders.  I have never and will likely never own a flasher, or any type of auger that is not a hand auger. I bought an 8" Mora as my 1st auger in 1988, and got 20 years out of it before buying both a new 6" and 8" Mora in 2008, and if you have sharp blades it is not difficult to drill holes with a  Mora as some would claim.

Most of my tipups are the old 3 stick ones, not a name brand just budget locally made ones that I have owned for 20+ years and they still catch a lot of fish ! I am old school by choice, if not using a spud bar to make a hole, and having a shelter out there are considered old-school these days. LOL
