Tipups
« on: Nov 29, 2006, 10:44 AM »
I saw a couple of guys on the ice last winter using a rig, I think they called them "slammers."  It worked like a tip up but used a rod and reel, with the tip of the rod down under some kind of hook.  When they would get a bit the thing released.  I didn't wonder over into their business so I can't tell you any more about it.  Does anyone have any info about such a thing?  It looked like a pretty good rig to me.
Shut up and fish.

what happens if your using a bigger shiner or something and a pike grabs it and doesnt get the hole shiner in its mouth, and it sets the hook on the pike? is it a lost fish then?

It looked like the rig sat up quit a bit higher..  Hard to tell though I guess.  I should have went over and talked to um, but I pretty much tend to my own on the ice.  Not that I won't talk your ear off if you come over.

slammertipup.com I read an article on these and they said that they were getting better hook ups with these than with standard tipups. I've never tried them though

Why would they be illegal?  With an automatic hookset, you reduce the risk of the fish swallowing the hook and damaging vital internal organs, thus killing the fish.

The slammers look like they would be fun, but they take the challenge out of trying to set the hook  ;)

The way I understand it they are not considered to be a tipup but they are a hand line.

I just put my kit together last night. If I was to get another on I would order it complete because by the time you get the wood you spend just as much.
Just need some ice so I can try it out.

I just read the reg's and don't see nothing about it. I know it's illegal in Minn, but not here from what I see. The slammer rig's yall are talking about are very popular amongst Laker fisherman and Pike fishing. A different way to fish for sure.
