Would you leave a portable shelter on the ice?
« on: Jan 14, 2009, 08:40 AM »
I recently purchased one of the larger clam portable shelters (the 5600).  I would love to anchor it and leave it on the ice for a few days at a time but I am not sure what would become of it.  The state regs allow for it (as long as its labeled properly).  But the area I would leave it in has consistent traffic and I certainly wouldn't be out there every minute of each day.  So what's everyone think? is it a non-issue? or would do you think the new clam would be vandalized or even stolen?

I remember staying in a hotel in Las Vegas and a sign in the room said....Please put valuables away and don't tempt our employees.  Sad to say..but the world we live in today..I couldn't afford to take a chance of it being stolen and me having to replace it. If it was me....I wouldn't leave it.
NEVER lied about the size of the fish I caught.....just remember them being BIGGER!!

Don't listen to all these other guys....you can leave it out.  Where do you fish anyway????  :) :) :)  Nah, no way.  I do know some guys put them out overnight at the Great Northern Challenge but it's still risky.  We've had people break into our wooden shacks to steal the heaters....they left the other gear untouched.

Wouldn't do it. Even if it was stolen I would not trust those anchors if the wind picked up, with nobody in that shelter it could get blown off the lake.

Yes...please leave it in 70'-100' of water on lake George this weekend. Preferably somewhere outside of Northwest bay and I promise to pick up my mess and turn the lights off when I leave.  ::)
If you leave it anywhere else I would tie up an angry Rottweiler  that hasn't eaten in three days inside the shanty :flex:

Check the post on the general page about the guy that got his ice castle stolen.  If someone would steal a shanty that big, I wouldn't put it past them to pocket a portable.  It is not a perfect, honest world.  No way would I leave it.

I had a friend who thought it would be a good idea to leave his 6800 out. Someone got a great deal on that cook stove propane tank, and chairs included.    >:(

I think if you left all of your gear - power auger, Mr. Buddy heater w/ propane of course, poles, lures, underwater camera and vexilar- I think people would give it more respect and leave it alone. Kinda like marking yer territory type of stuff.

"They" stole a case of empties (beer) from the back of my truck once....I felt soooo violated....

They are called portable shanties not disposable shanties......

i figured this would be the consensus but isn't there at least someone out there that still believes in people?
Just one?

I guess the better question is, would you leave a permanent shanty (with locks) out on the ice on busy NY Lakes?

If you lock your permanent shanty, next time out you'll have to replace the door, so we leave ours un locked - just dont leave anything valuable and the neighbors keep an eye on it also.

Weve been leaving shacks on the St. Lawrence for years and not one has been broken into or stolen. Not to say it cant happen. And yes a padlock helps but if someone wants something bad enough..they'll probably get it ;) I did watch a shack go for a ride over the edge and down to the bottom of the mighty st. lawrence once, haha, the look on my fathers face :roflmao:
