Crappie guideline
« on: Jan 23, 2005, 09:20 PM »
I heard this on here a long time ago, and in my experience it is DEAD ON pretty much everywhere i fish

we all know crappies like to suspend, but at what level in the water column?

well, try this: take the water depth, divide it in half, and add a foot...that is how far down there are

example - 12 feet deep, crappies are 7 feet down, 5 feet off the bottom.

 - seems to be true anywhere i find active schooling crappies.

Cool - I'll try that out if I manage to get to my favourite crappie lake this winter.  Has this proven to be a year-round phenomena for you, or just under the ice?

That seems to be pretty right. Almost 95% of the crappies I catch are suspended well off the bottom. I did catch one large one, about a 2 pounder, last year directly on the bottom as soon as I closed my bail. But every other one was well off the bottom and most of them aren't too shy.

thriller - i catch crappies in the weeds all summer, but some of my friends that fish different lakes say its true with crappies over open water in the summer, too.

cool...thanks.  I haven't had much open water success as I don't have good boat control (transom mount electric), so typically drift over open water, but occasionally have success anchoring or in the weeds as well.
