Didn't think there was walleye in Morningside its not on the DEC's walleye stocking list. Did the fire department put walleye in Morningside to catch? DEC pretty much only puts walleye in the Rio and the Titicus (sp?) down this way. Everything else is Albany and north. They don't even stock Swinging Bridge or Greenwood Lake (NJ puts muskie and walleye in GWL)

Walleyes are in Swinging Bridge, Rio, Mongaup Falls, Cliff lake, Toronto, White Lake, Morningside, Loch Sheldrake and White lake. Not sure of who or how they got stocked in all those lakes but know for sure they are there. Unlike the big lakes up north they are not an easy fish to target and probably not in the numbers like other fish here.  I can count on one hand how many I have caught over many years of fishing down here but they sure are a nice eating fish. Seems to me they are more of a night time predator fish and it is pretty rare to get one fishing during the day. White lake has some real nice Lake Trout but damn few ever get caught and I suspect most guys don't really target them where they hang. We tend to fish different down here than in other more northern lakes.

So far this season has been a dismal failure IMO but mainly because I go for the big fish and don't really care about the standard fare of perch, crappie and pickerel. Getting completely skunked out on the ice is still a nice day out as far as I'm concerned and better if you do it with a couple buddies in the middle of a long boring winter.

Swinging Bridge, Rio, Mongaup Falls, Cliff lake are all connected so when you stock one really you stock all of em. I know way back in the day DEC use to stock swinging bridge and Mongaup but forget what years. I believe the year the dam broke they stopped stocking Swinging Bridge. Also swinging Bridge Rio and Mongaup seem to be able to sustain their respective walleye populations due to the forage and available spawning habitat in those respective bodies of water. The DEC website only goes back to 2011 with stocking information unfortunately so can't find that out. I know for certain they're in White Lake... someone catches one every year there during the tourney. Looking at the contour map for Morningside I would imagine the walleye that are/were in there would get caught pretty quickly since its small, shallow, and experiences some heavy fishing pressure.

Morningside is a bit perplexing with Walleyes. Seems more like a standard pickerel, perch, bass lake to me but I do know some eyes have been caught there. Where they go in the summer warm water is the real question because they like the cold water of around 55* just like the trout. All the others have 50-90 feet deep spots but I don't know how deep MS is.

Every contour map I look at shows 10ft so who knows. But things should refreeze at night the only issue is going to be Wednesday Thursday when its 50

45-50 during the day will soften up the top, melt snow and maybe make some slush but this time of year where there is 10-12 inches of black ice it won't do anything to that. Every night this week is predicted to be at or below 32 so a few hours each afternoon above freezing is not an issue unless we get warm rains. A few inches of snow on top now is perfect but it could be glare ice slick for this coming weekend. I can tell you for sure from being on them that White lake and Toronto are plenty safe in almost all spots with between 10-13 inches of ice. I don't go near the inflow streams any way and SB is just 5 miles from my house but scares me with the river running through it and the water levels changing all the time. Further south in Orange and Dutchess It could be 10 degrees warmer so all bets are off down there.

Cannot get on Chodikee. 1.2" ice with a foot of water before the ice begins again at the launch dock. Went up to a small higher elevation pond , 10" solid ice, not a bite.

TRAGEDY !!!!!  Woke up this morning with a giant head cold, thus deep-sixing my plans to fish the two contests this coming weekend.  Just don't want to take the chance of turning this into the dreaded Flu !!!
For all interested, I heard from the Mahogany Ridge Fishing & Hunting club yesterday, who told me the ice is fine and the contest on Highland Lake is a "Go".  If you are concerned, the club has a FaceBook page and will be posting any changes, If they occur.

Good Luck to all you IceShanty.com members fishing the contests....catch 'em up !!!!

I went out to a small local pond here in Dutchess, caught a few crappy but more importantly there was still 11 inches of ice and it’s just starting to get soft around the edges.

I’m hoping to get one more weekend on the ice locally

I am thinking, that we should be campaigning for opening ice fishing on the reservoir west of the Hudson.  I would start with an email campaign to the State Economic Development folks, State Tourism and the Assembly/Senate members in our area.  The premise would be to generate economic benefit to communities in the Catskills.  These area's are some of the most economically depressed areas in the State and the revenue from ice fisher persons could be significant (hotels, dinners/restaurants, bait, fishing tackle, guides etc).  I think the Governor if he see's upstate economic benefits will push DEP and NYSDEC to change the rules.  There are enough of us on IceShanty that a barrage of e-mails could effect change.

Heck yea! They finally opened up for recreational boating. For a summer I had my sunfish sailboat on the Neversink.
The argument would be about drawdown. But what about Swinging bridge and Toronto reservoirs, they draw down also. The Neversink is naturally fed so less fluctuations than others except summer it can get low.

I would be on the Roundout every decent fishing day!

The state just opened a big new gambling casino in Monticello and I just never figured a place that big and that nice could possibly survive here in Sullivan county. Boy was I wrong. They can't hire enough staff willing to work and the place is mobbed every day since it opened last week.

If they opened the Roundout, Neversink, Ashokan, Pepacton, Cannonsville and Downsville reservoirs to ice fishing the NY Catskills would become a premier winter hot spot.

I think the main reason they don't open the reservoirs WOH for ice fishing is because of the water levels constantly changing, it would be dangerous.
I belong to a club on the Pepacton and I observe the ever changing water levels. They draw off WOH to keep the EOH rezzies at a constant level.

I don't believe that is a reason at all. They draw off water from Toronto and Swinging bridge all winter long and it sure is a PITA getting on and off but the ice floats on top no matter where the water level goes, up or down. The NY City Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) makes all the rules on these western NY City water supply reservoirs and I think they just don't want to be bothered for 3 months of every year and just like the lakes on the other side of the Hudson they would have yahoos out there on 2 inches of ice in early January and late March and the bodies won't be found until late April early May.All of these reservoirs have currents running through them, springs under them and streams and creeks running into them. You could be fishing on a foot of ice in one spot and 100 yards away on 2 inches. I live 5 miles from Swinging bridge and pass right by it when I  go ice fishing. The Mongaup river runs clear through it, Cliff lake empties into it and a number of pretty large brooks flow into it making for sketchy ice in a lot of places. Good that it is open to fishing hard water but I avoid it except on very cold winters when most ice on all the other local lakes gets well over a foot thick. SB is good now but it won't be for long once the rivers and creeks start thawing and running hard. Think about this. The King contest used to be held on SB for a long time before they switched over to White lake. The switch was made because the ice usually sucks on SB.

Checked the ice on a local spot today and was surprised to find 8-10 inches. Although the further I went out while checking the ice was starting to get honeycombed. Be safe out there. Think my next and last trip out will be up at Sacandaga next weekend.

Hi anybody check white lake or highland lake after this rain??? Jeff

White Lake had 13.5 inches of ice on Monday. It was glare ice and very bumpy from traffic while slushy. It is warm and raining today which should flatten out the top and tonight it will go down into the teens which will freeze it up. The edges are fine, the ice is plenty thick enough and I doubt a day or two of warm weather will hurt anything. 18* tonight, high or 32* tomorrow and low of 24* tomorrow night. Just stay away from the inflows of streams and creeks.
