Moving a hub shack
« on: Nov 15, 2018, 10:39 AM »
I have a hub-style shelter.  I'm going to Mark Martin's ice fishing school on Mullet Lake (Michigan), and think he may want to keep mobile.  Have any of you tried to tow a set-up hub?  I have a Snowdog that gets me to my spot, and my hub is a Polar Bird 3T with the floor.  Thinking maybe towing from the guy lines and a corner?

Never towed one but I have pulled one setup 100 yards with no trouble.

thinking things can go bad fast towing with it expanded. only way i could think is build a foldable base to keep it on and tow it with the base unfolded with skies under it.
might be time for a flip over?

Iceassin, not sure a smitty would help with an expanded hub.  Already out of the sled.
3300, I was hoping to avoid the expense, but it may be worth the $ if I risk damage to my hub by towing.  Dragging 100yrds a pop is one thing, but Mullet Lake is HUGE.

Now if you could attach these to the 4 corner poles that might work. https://www.amazon.com/Paricon-Flying-Saucer-Sled-3-Pack/dp/B001NDIZIM

I would spend more time becoming proficient in setting up and taking down your hub ..large enough sled to hold the shelter w/ tub cover ...and some gear ties . This way you can take down tie up ...place in tub and cover for motorized travel.

Lack of mobility without having to take the hub down each time I moved is the reason I got rid of it and went back to the old Scout flip over and haven't regretted doing so.

Best way to do this, to quote Tow-Mater, is "to not to."

Dragging is not a no-wear, no-damage proposition.

Honestly there is no way I'd tow a hub any distance at all.  One good bump and a side will "pop in and who knows what happens from there.  I have a eskimo 949i and after quite a bit of practice I can get it set up in 15 minutes or so with anchors in the ice and be fishing.  What time of year is the class?  I'd look at wearing some extra cloths and taking a minimal approach of the snowdog and a sled.  Else like others have commented maybe browse craigslist or facebook marketplace and I guarantee you can find a single flipover for less that $200 if not cheaper.

There is a thread on here somewhere that describes the folding portable floor on skis in the picture below. It was built to be mobile on the ice.  I saved the picture as I thought it was an interesting concept.

all you would have to do is add a third ski to the outer side that's unfolded. shouldn't be in the way folded.

i wouldn't want all of the weight if it were me when a flip just makes it so simple and light.

the first shappell minute man was made of wood for base/sled and tarp for tent. they suck up the water is the problem.

This is why I have a one man flip over AND a FF 949i. You can't beat the mobility of a flip over. But once you find the fish a pop up is great.
