Somewhat cryptic subject line, but you serious front range perch fishermen know the area I'm referencing.

Crispy start to the morning with single digit temps, but things would "warm up" quickly.

Stu and I started in the usual spots and moved around lots, finally finding them and hole hopping to keep up with the school.
Stu scored a 14.25 and I caught a 14 and a 13. We each caught several over 12, as well.

Hey Mike, Why did you change your name??

BTW, Thanks again for the Ginger beer!  Had it the other night with my Baked Parmesan perch, and it was pretty darn good!

Nice work! Amazing what hole hoping does.  I always tell people to move around for a better chance at a lot of fish. Physical but worth the fun. :D

Mr Badger and crew move around more then a little. They will swiss cheese the lake in a few hours chasing perch.

Crazy Tom, I was always annoyed at some of my older buddies that have been doing it far more than I have, I took the lazy route than I decided to drill as much as I can to follow the fish and it has paid off. My rule of thumb is to always drill at least 50 plus hole and any lake I go to.

The "swiss cheese" approach has definitely helped find and stay on the schools, but there is a method to the hole drilling madness. After all, 80% of the work involves finding and staying on the school(s,) 10% is your equipment choices, eliminating common mistakes/being efficient, and then making them bite.

The last 10% is selective harvest - searching for the goliath loner trophy fish or picking them out of the schools. Seems like the really big ones are generally off by themselves or in very small groups.

As far as getting numbers of fish, I think working in small groups has the best chance of success. Too many (6+) in any one search team seems to chase them away. Any of my success is based on a coordinated team approach.

Today's successful front range perch angler relies on local knowledge and mobility. It may seem easy, but lots of work and thought goes into each little success. I am blessed to fish with some of the funniest and most accomplished "sticks" around. Whether or not we catch fish, I learn something new every time out.

Get 'em.

Well said badgerx.  Half the time it's about learning the other enjoy the fishing.  A lot of times if I do not catch anything i'm happy to see the others in the group get into fish.

Here's the "catch 22" as I see it with selective harvest and these perch this season. When perching, you need to hook'em,  get'um out quick. than drop back down fast to keep them around, but when fishing deep (hint, hint) bladders are popping out making release not possible.

I know people talk about using a needle or such with lakers, to decompress the bladder, has anyone done this with perch?

Bottom line I guess, that as a pan fish we fish for these to eat, so it really doesn't matter anyways, just would be nice to know, if its an option.

As far as selective harvest of perch goes.... aint nobody throwing an 11, 12, 13 or 14 back down the hole.

I have, I'd take a 10 in male over a 14 incher any day, and I'd give you two for one on Sunday.  Actually I prefer 8 in males, they are tastier!

I agree with the taste angle. I eat a LOT of perch and the 10-11"ers are tastier than the 14"ers.  Old fish = old meat. Just like any other fish-

8's are better yet, just have to have more, lol.

I like the challenge of hunting them down and then the finicky little bstards won't bite!  Have to change the rig every other day-

Nice fish all.  We had a supreme day as well. Found gold, then fools gold, then the gold mine late in day.  We were the "dumbasses" that dont have wheels. Yea. U know who u are. Glad to hear everyone is having fun. 6.2 lb slimeball to cap off the evening.   10 inch hole sure made it nice to land!!!!  ;D

Nice work. I need to get into some perch soon. Keep telling my wife they make the best fish tacos, but have not targeted them in like 15 years.
