Title: Midweek perchin UPDATED 2/14 Ice Fishing Vaca pics
Post by: TimK on Dec 20, 2018, 05:43 PM
Suppose to be nasty weather this weekend so I decided to fish today and maybe tomorrow.  Brought my GPS with me this time to try out a spot that was good last year.  The bite was slow but there were still fish around and I did manage to at least catch what I was after and two pigs at that, at 13" and 14".... maybe equal to 6 or 7 of the 8.5" variety? ;D

13"

3.75 hrs on good roads early in the morning to get there. Getting home can take 5 hrs. It'll stay a secret for awhile.

Nice job Tim.  Should be on one of em there next week after Xmas...If your around I'll be the fat guy with the Nils/Rigid setup and a Packer Style Smitty.  Likely jigging one and soaking another under a vintage Beaver Dam.  Looks like you aren't a fan of tipups but hey...that trap won't bite my man.  Bump over and say "Hi".

lol, thanks Tim --- nah, you're not a hack!  You got those pigs fair and square!  ;D  And that eye was a beast.  Glad to see fishing those numbers still produces fat perch.

Decided to go back today as the next 4 or 5 look questionable.  The Solstice brought me luck today and the Fish were still there.  Fished 8 to noon, brought up 10 perch and 1 bonus panfish.  Kept 6 perch, with 5 being over 10.5 up to 13.5... had to keep one 9"er for comparison in the pic.  Sent a few 8s back down the hole.  Pretty decent bite until about 1030am.

Yea all of them on the little tungsten, even the big walleye.  I have 2 other rods rigged up with a hali on one and small plastic minner on the other but if they dont want they tungsten they dont want the others either so i only use 1 jig.. all the time haha. Had to move about 25yards off the GPS spot but once i found em I had fish on the screen all day, alot of yelling at the machine many many lookers. Plenty left in that area.

Also for what its worth - picked up a new perch rod this week.  Frabill 30" deadstick rod, found for $20 at walmart, the reel is a throw away but this is my new fav perch rod.  Absolutely no back bone so a 12" perch will bend you over to the handle but extremely sensitive to light bites yet still sets a good hook.  Highly recommended.

What with the recent pictures of jumbos and perch tacos I couldnt take it!  Wednesdays are great days to fish, only 2 other people on the whole lake, and a little less of a finese bite.  Fished around a new area til I found some fattys.  Three 12s, 13, 14 and a few metro keepers with busted air sacks.  Lake has come up 4ft in a month for whats thats worth.  Shorelines will go fast with warm weather but still a good 10" of ice.

Spent the last few weeks in upstate NY visiting my parents and (mostly) fishing Lake George.  Got there for early ice and hammered the lakers and perch.  10 to 20 lakers a morning on average, with most fish being in the 22-25" range.  My GPS spots for perch from pervious years produced well, and even found several new areas for next year.  The lake is 32 miles long and a really great fishery.  The average size perch is relatively small, but they are plentiful.  Now that Im back in CO im pretty pumped, should have good ice well into april this year up here on the west slope.
