what can be done about the dink perch problem on Chautauqua lake? everybody take 5 fisherman with them and everyone keep their limit? think it will ever come back as a good perch lake as far as good sized perch?

The lake is already overloaded with Musky, used to have high population of eyes but crashed somewhat, still has plenty of bass, and crappie are rebounding so plenty of predators.I've heard a couple of reports where the perch are avg.7 to 71/2" so some improvement is there.

It def seems to be a problem. I was out last Sunday and caught pretty close to 150 7-7 1/2" perch and prob two that were 8 1/2-9". The bigger ones were def fatter and if I would had a bucket of those, I woulda kept them.  I just can't bring myself to filet the 7-8" perch.  Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Will these fish ever grow up or are the numbers just so high that they grow way too slow?  Will everyone keeping a limit of 7-8" perch help this out?

Bass and musky are doing great, and although they elude me quite often, I hear walleye are getting better as well.

I really wish the perch would grow up though.

Were the perch really 7-7.5"? If so I would like to know where you were too. I will keep a limit of those. They are the sweetest fish you will ever eat. Keeping a limit may not help but it definately can't hurt.

I didn't measure every fish, but they all looked to be the exact same fish.  85% were 7-7 1/2" with a few bigger and a few smaller.  The problem was those 7- 71/2 are pretty slim, the 8" we're much fatter. That's why I didn't bother to keep them.

After cleaning 50 undersized perch, I'm so sick of them I don't even wanna eat them.

All were caught north of long point.

Keep every single one you catch...  Feed the gulls and coyotes.  These little pricks eat and consume everything when growing.  They make way too much competion for young of the year walleye to survive..

has anyone been out at bemus pt? I usually do pretty good there for perch and an occasional walleye. 50 7 to 8 in. perch works for me.

i have to admit to catching my fair share of peewees over the years, but i can you tell that the spring time perch fishing the last 2 years has revealed bigger perch than i have ever seen in that lake.  seriously lots of 10s and 11s with some bigger and of course many shorts too.  i have never been able to bag these nice perch through the ice however.  in may we beat em up in the weedlines with salted minnows but i have no clue through the ice, but my point is that they are there and there are more of them than you would think.  i am sure this will draw a thousand "where were you fishing" questions and a bunch of "your full of crap" comments but it is the truth weather you think so or not.  12-15fow across from webb's or near the watermark resturant is where we did most of the damage in may but again, have never seen perch like this through the ice. good luck

As stated earlier, Hooker closed. Hogan's is open but had very little last several times I've been there.  If you're looking for a place comparable to the Hooker, check out Chautauqua Reel Outdoors.  It's in the dollar store plaza next to the lakewood dipson theaters.

I've been in several time and they've always taken care of me.

Do they open early and have bait?

They def have bait.  Last I was in, med and lg emeralds, lg goldens, and fat heads.  They also had waxies, spikes, and mousies.

Not sure when they open, but I'm guessing they'll be open according to demand.

Have caught many 13-14 inch perch at red lake up north and they had the grubs. Didn't seem to stunt they're growth....

Have seen them in monster perch in Port Bay and Sodus Bay, so I would also agree that the grubs don't affect size.
