Welcome roasterx,
Where you from? I am from out of state and the Utah boys have been very good to me! Some of the best guys I have met on the ice are here. See you at the GTG.

Prospector - I am from Eureka. I am just getting into ice fishing. So far, I have only pursued trout. What would I need to bring to Pineview? What species of fish are there?

....and thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I'd like to get out to Pineview, but I am a little sheepish because I don't know if I have the gear for the reservoir.

Standard ice gear would be appropriate.  It can get windy up there at times so a shelter of some kind could be beneficial.  Likely areas we would be fishing in can be easily reached by short walks from parking areas.  The fish you are most likely to catch up there are perch and crappie.  An occasional bass is also caught and even less often a tiger muskie can be brought up to see the light.  But of course would have to be immediately returned from whence it came.  Join us if you can.

I fish the view with a noodle rod, 2-4# line and small jigs. Gold tungsten ball is my go to jig for perch. Bring a bucket or a rod holder to rest the rod in so you can see the light bites. I jig a bit until the fish come in and then set my rod in the holder and watch the tip. When you get a bite, rip their gills out! :icefish:

Man i was starting to think you and your wife moved to warmer weather. Sorry to hear about your leg. If you make it over the hill for the GTG i will be shuttling on my snowmobile as long as the slush stiffens back up. Hope everything heals up good for you hitman

As dubob said mainly fishin for perch and crappie, so small is good. Shrimpos, ratsos, Northland bro & mud bugs, Nuclear ants, rat finkees and for getting it down there a smaller sweedish pimple or cast master about 6-12in above it works.

As for parking location we discussed cemetary point last year but with the blizzard that also showed up that day the few of us that made it fished the narrows by the dam. I'm hoping the slush that I've been reading about freezes back up or we may need hip boots. I would say park in the port ramp parking lot as it should be packed down enough or melted for cars and we can fish around browning point which is not to far of a walk. I also have a pretty good spot GPS'd that i would be willing to share if browning don't produce that is not far from there. If the conditions on the ice are good i will shuttle people and gear with my sled. Directions for pineview are as follows. Take I-15 to Ogden, take the 12th street exit (EXIT 344) and then go east. The road you will be on is HWY 39 and it will take you up Ogden canyon right to the reservoir. When you get to the dam go left across the dam and it will take you to port ramp. Turn right into port ramp and drive down to the parking area. Do not try to drive down the boat ramp to the ice as you will more than likely not get back up. I will be making regular reckon trips the next 2 weeks and i will keep everyone updated on how the conditions are. Does any one have any other suggestions? Feel free to speak up for the few of us that fish the view regularly

Well here's the good and the bad, Me, fishonone & icecutterion fished the view tonite at port ramp and the slush is about 6-7in with 1-2in of snow on top of that. Plenty of good black ice underneath and the edges looked a little soft but we got on with no problems. The parking lot and the road in is a little rutted up and you have only one trail in till you get to the parking lot then there is a little more room to turn around. I would recommend 4X4 only but icecutter took his car in there and only drug bottom most the way to the lot. LOL It appears the last rain/warm spell was pretty nasty in there. I'm going to say that if people are going to be coming in cars they will have to park at cemetary point or browning point. Now the good. The slush is refreezing pretty good and there is hope that a sled will be able to make it on there once again by next week maybe, weather pending.  The trails that people have been making on the ice were solid enough to keep you on top. When you get off the trails different story for my big butt, i was braking thru but the skinnier folk i was with did ok, We got into some good crappie right off the bat at the docks and we didn't drill our 1st holes till about 330. They were still biting when we left at last light and it was starting to get pretty cold. I will be back up ealry next week to see what the weekend weather does

It ain't looking good Matt.  See my weather report here.  I didn't make it to Mantua yesterday; I spent the day with my bride going to Scheels and Cabelas instead.  Seeing some of the reports from yesterday, I would guess I made the right choice.

Looking at the KSL 10-day forecast on my phone shows the temps for Huntsville at night at or below freezing starting Sunday.  However, daytime temps will be into the 40s until next week Wednesday.  Starting Thursday next week, Ogden valley will be back into temps below freezing night and day so we might still have some good conditions by the 22nd.  In the meantime, we can hope and pray for favorable conditions by then.

Me and fishonone will be going up one last time on Wednesday to check the ice, if its not good we may have to either change the date if it freezes back up or cancel till next season. This early thaw just stinks  >:(

Looks like we should get back down to freezing temps on Wednesday, hopefully that trend continues and we can get a few more weeks of ice fishing.

The biggest prob is the run off water coming in. Went to chesterfield toady and the ice was over 2ft thick but the edges were crazy. I'm putting up a post on the Utah board now.

Crossing my fingers that you have a great report for us.  I am really hoping to get out at least one more time and meet the good folks from the iceshanty boards.  Be safe and best of luck!

I got word from a coworker today that the ice was ok this weekend. We are going to have to postpone our recon trip from today till tomorrow. I have a new appliance being delivered today as this was the only day they could do it till next week and mrs. muskyon would like it today  ;D So as soon as me and fishonone get back tomorrow night i will post up our findings. With luck the conditions will be like dubobs at mantua and we can use the sleds    The weather saturday is looking good also

Ok so here's what everyone has been waiting to hear, ITS ON FOR SATURDAY    The ice/slush has stiffened back up and the edges are ok, a plank will be needed (2-4ft of soft ice) not bad and after getting on there is over 20in of ice. 15in of clear and the rest refroze slush. Fishonone has 2 planks 12ft & 14ft 2X10 which we will be bringing. At port ramp there is a dock that can get you on the ice with ease, no plank needed. With the exception of by the bank everywhere i went was froze all the way, no slush underneath. Ice cleats are highly recommended. So for parking i would say if you have a truck you are fine at port ramp, which is where I'll be going out from on my snowmobile. Cars could get in there but i would not recommend it. Dubob checked out cemetery point (thanks for doing the reconnaissance) and people in cars can park at cemetery point parking lot which is plowed. We can fish on the north side of cemetery point or on the other hand If everyone can get into port ramp then i would say we can fish around the docks (we pulled 35-40 crappie there tonite) or over on browning. Both areas will work fine for perch and crappies. If everyone who is attending would PM me i will be more than happy to give you my # and you can give me a call upon arrival and i can shuttle people/gear with the sled or direct you to where we are at. I will be flying the iceshanty militia flag

That is great news!  Looking forward to it.

FYI, I have a small portable grill that I always bring with me on the ice.  I usually cook up some hotdogs for my kids.  Everyone is welcome to use the grill.  I've taken breakfast burritos in tin foil and heated them up before on grill as well.  It's makes a tasty, warm breakfast on the ice.

I'd like to add to M46's warning; DO NOT attempt to drive a passenger CAR into the Port Ramp area.  The drive in is a very deep rutted driveway and if you slip into the ruts, you will more than likely high center your vehicle and be stuck.  The ruts are all the way down to the pavement and deep.  A truck (4X4 recommended) is needed to get all the way into the parking area.

The cemetery Point parking lot and the road into it is plowed and clear.  Once you get to that lot and start your descent down the NORTH side of the point road, you can call either M46 or myself and we can come get you and take you to the group area.  I'll have a 2 place snowmobile out there as well.  M46 will give you both phone numbers via a PM.

I'll be having breakfast at Beez Café in Roy at 7AM before heading up to the Port Ramp.  If you'd like to join me, I'd be happy to meet you there.  They run a great special every morning for about $5.50.  You will not leave there hungry.

See you tomorrow.

Is the best way to get to Port Ramp to take 39 then take 158 across the dam?  Is 158 where the road is single lane and rutted?
