I was up there and did fish.  The worst day was Saturday with the wind.

As far as blue jeans, one of my friends spent the day in flannel lined blue jeans and a semi-thick windproof jacket. He also had a heated tent to retreat into.
(He was also the guy who fell through up to his head.  We worked in groups, so it was only the 'inconvenience' of getting wet.  We had another person who went in up to their knees right next to shore.).

I accessed the lake from a dock that extended into the safe ice, and exited the same way.   There was 11.5 inches once you got past the shoreline.

The derby is over, congrats to the winner.  That is an impressive fish.

I hope next year is a better winter.

but it is the giants fault if the stadium bleachers are not safe and they knowingly let people sit there, the bleaches collapse and injur people!.....isn't it??

Besides who wants to go see the giants play jk lol
perfectly said, not really matter how long you have been fishing, no one expects an association putting on a derby to lie and say it's safe when it's not , period!

Man, that photo just proved that fish was from a different day. It's so obvious it isn't even funny. Now, I'm only a 30 year old man but I have NEver seen facial hair grow this fast within a few hours of one photo.... check out the beard thickness under his lip on the sunny day...

Now at the weigh in....

I see skin behind one beard, and not the other..... just saying...

Giants don't have any control over the weather, and the Schroon Lake F&G Club doesn't have any control over ice conditions.

I question if that pike was caught on Saturday 3/4 or Sunday 3/5.  The temperatures were quite cold on both days and this guy is in blue genes.  Either it is a deferent day or he is a better man than me to be out all day in freezing temperatures in blue genes.  Maybe he has some good thermal knits.  Sure seems suspicious.  Nice big pike regardless.
Or he has a portable shanty and a heater!

Touche! mike, touche!

As far as the fish goes look at the stains on the guys genes on his left knee, looks like he is fishing near a road the guy was prolly in the car or a shanty.also it was cold sat and Sunday afternoon who's to say the fish didn't freeze in the back of the truck on the way to F&G club and hadn't fully thawed by the time they took that pic.I'm not surprised to c 1 guy catch 2 monster pike to win the derby 2 years in a row specially on a year that didn't seem to have the turn out of people it usually does, it's not uncommon to land monster pike on schroon if u know the lake

After watching all of this play out. I think I agree with Mealworm.
I wouldn't be surprised if the dude just has the lake mastered. If he had it mastered last year. He still does this year. And probably stands a good chance at putting up a monster next year.

If we're splitting beard hairs. You're looking at his beard under 2 totally different conditions SS. Condensation from being inside a car or shack to outside will create some beard freeze and perhaps a snotsicle or 2 making the beard appear thinner. At room temperature the beard will thaw returning to it's original thick form.

I gotta keep a little humor in the conversation.  :P

Hey, just pointing out what I'm seeing....

There are 3 other major factors wrong with that picture vs a frozen fish but I will stop at the beard lol

Seems to me like he probably works real hard to master the art of pike fishing and this lake and we should give him credit unless and until anyone can prove any differently. Great job!

Fished Eagle Pt. yesterday (which will be my last time this year).  As of yesterday, there were still some spots to get on the ice, but it's definitely sketchy (first hit with the spud bar and the ice cracked in several spots).

Midway through the morning, the crack opened up big time (it extends across the entire lake) and I had a hard time finding a spot to cross back over.  It's definitely not going to get any better with the warmer temperatures and rain.  If anyone decides to fish there, don't leave home without your spud bar and stay safe out there.

Just my 2 cents. The photos of his "beard thickness" proves nothing.. the only reason it looks that way is from the lighting. It obviously was a sunny day, and the bright sun VS the indoor lights is the only thing causing that illusion.

On the other hand.. that guy is standing a couple feet off shore.. weren't all the shorelines shot for the most part last weekend?

Actually that looks about right for Sat. against steep banks.  educated guess East Shore, winds the day before pushed ice up against shoreline, as well as the little snow we got the night before.

Just wondering if it's worth a trip to schroon lake this weekend. Been trying to plan a trip all year. Is the ice safe. Or is there any other lakes I could try close to schroon that has lake trout. Going after bucket list fish. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to give conditions advise this time of year, looked like a hole opened up at the narrows, but not sure it wasn't a pocket of rainwater.  Going to be very cold this weekend.
