They are an awesome chocolate color from schroon. Lake George are kinda silver and gold. Or in Tonys case "golden"

Nice looking fish prchslyr!!

So yesterday I finally had time to gather all the fishing gear and get it ready for the season. I had the sled inside the house with all my tip ups in it waiting to get checked out after I got done putting new line on my rods, and out of nowhere one of the flags pops right up on the tip up. At first I was like, that was kinda weird!! Then I told myself, maybe it's just a sign it's going to be a good year. Welp....work was pretty slow today so I decided to drive up to Schroon for the first trip of the year. Didnt get on the ice till about 11:30 and fished till almost 3. First 3 drops produced fish. Actually bigger fish than I usually seem to get there too. First one was 23". Second one about 22ish. Third about the same as second. I kept the first one for a dinner this weekend. Ended up going 6 for 8. There were a couple 20-21" fish and one around 18. Definitely was a great first day out.

Here is a few:

All was well till this happened...I edited the end out due to many many curse words

Think this guy bit off 1 too many...

And ice was 5" measured.

Any idea how much ice in Adirondack? Across & North of Eagle Point? From Shaw Hill Rd. north to the Lodges?

Fished Southern Basin today cold and slow some lookers and chasers.  Ice is a solid 6 throughout.  DEC visited everyone in the south end checking licenses.  They were on snow machines covering lots of ground.

Didn't get a chance to report when I got home yesterday but fished and north of eagle point campground yesterday and got a couple. Moved south around 11 and picked up 5 more. All small fish kept two 19 inchers for dinner. Are the lakers in Schroon simply smaller and less aggressive then they are in lake George or has it just been my luck of the draw. Though I was able to get a few of them to chase and hit a lot of my hits (especially in the afternoon) came of a finesse style of jigging I started doing last year on lake George when they were slow. Had one fish chase up to the surface and spend a good 5 minutes swimming around playing with my pimple just wouldn't bite. Looked like it would have been the fish of the day but he won that battle. None the less it was good to get out and get some laker action in to get ready for lake George.

I don't think they are smaller than Lake George but there seems to be more legal sized fish in Lake George. I believe LG has more fish per acre than most lakes except maybe Lake Placid.. fishing on Schroon seems to be tougher than LG in winter and open water. LG is a special place..

How do you guys get the lakers to take? I'm still trying to get my first and I just fished Schroon for the first time this weekend. I saw them on the vex and noticed that they'll shoot right up after my bait if I reel it up, but they never strike. Regardless of if I stop after a while of reeling or just keep reeling at a moderate speed. I tried changing baits too. They seem interested because the'll follow it for 30-40 feet through the water column, but no strike. What gives?

P.S. I've been getting flags all day but no fish. I just come up to the tip up and the reel isn't spinning and the bait is still on the hook. Not wind flags, I know that. What's up with this lake?
Get the flag!

This weekend was a very slow bite. What fish I iced were shorties, save one. It was loaded w/ small smelt, even the small lakers were fat. They simply weren't feeding. The chasing is just that, they are instinctive to a predator. What I found unusual was the smelt also weren't biting. But the perch were. My salmon sets also were slow. A finicky weekend for sure. My niece did hook up w/ a monster but she panicked. LOL Almost lost the pole down the hole. I watched the fish attack on the flasher but didn't have time to warn her. It hit hard, bent a med. action rod right over. Halis & mousies seemed to attract the little guys the most.

schroon lakers are a completely different take on the jig stick than other lakers.   With the exception of the few kamikazee fish, schroon lakers are finnicky, and you need to experiment with what it takes to get them to hit.   Be it lure profile, color, action - you need to get dialed in to exactly what they want...when you get dialed in, you can really put a hurting on them...as a few of my friends put up crazy numbers this weekend.   a little tip - the forage they eat is small...

Got my first ice on!

Last Friday was my best lake trout day ever! Saturday was third best.

Buckshots and sweetish pimples baby!

Both days were no more than 5 hours.

Because a 40" pike WILL fit through.
The only issues I have with a 6" hole is having to tend it more often.
Why would anyone buy an 8" or 10" auger when they have a 6" nils ?

So they don't have to go to the gym to workout their shoulders??    ;D
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.
