Title: Most favorite jigs for panfish
Post by: Thearcher1340 on Aug 11, 2015, 05:27 PM
Hey guys newbie here just getting back into Ice fishing, got out late last year and I'm hooked all over again.  Been about 25 years or so I guess.  God used to b on the ice 5-7 days a week with my buddy.  Anyway been looking at some jigs from the sponsors, just wondering what the favorites are?  And any opinions on the soft plastics we just used to use waxes.

We had a favorite jig we used looked like a banana jig, this jig was the go to jig when nothing was biting laid horizontal in the water.  I was looking on custom jigs the closest I saw to it was the mini mert, going to give it a try with some waxes.

Crappies - any horizontal tungsten when they're skiddish - if the bite is on then I always use a northland forage minnow jig. I even use some old school 1/64oz ball jigs

gills - tungsten, gill pills, diamond jigs, banana jigs, gill getters from northand, HWI mantis jigs and heavy metal pro series jigs from sportsmens direct are excellent, skandi and Sitka tungsten jigs from stopper,

Sportsmen's direct has some really nice plastics, as does CJS, Trigger X. gulp minnows, 1" leeches and fish fry work well.

Last season the Lindy Frostee in pink glow tipped with waxies or spikes worked very well on crappies for me.
Swedish pimples, small jigging Raps, and Hali's worked well on perch tipped with spikes.
Bluegills fell for lots of jigs like many have mentioned....welcome to the addiction!    :icefish:

Again thanks guys really a big help, lol  mr. Clean u r so right will definitely end up with a tackle box full.  Just got back into fishing this year, my little guy is really hooked on it.  And in today's world u have to keep me busy, he's a great kid and on the right track. So we been fishing every chance we get down the river " Susquehanna ". In fact I just busted my St. Croix Sunday morning.  I figure it was a musky, hit like a freight train went on a good run and heard a pop and everything went slack and my rod tip about 15 inches down from tip broke.  Could really feel the strength in the fish.  But anyway trying to get geared up early for the upcoming season, want to be prepared when the hard water hits. Need the jigs, new poles and reels couple more tip ups and a new striker hard water suit, which I keep hinting about for birthday/Xmas present lol.

Slayerfish had to laugh, that was first thing my buddy said. The fish was peeling drag and the rod just popped, like a clean brake, not even splintered. I figured just got a bad blank.

Thearcher1340 I see you are located in northeast PA. It maybe worth your time to make a trip to Cabelas store in Hamburg some time this fall. I'm sure your little guy will like the store. It is one of Cabelas largest with an aquarium and restaurant..

Oh Mr. Clean the car knows the way all by itself been there many many times, and he loves the place.  I had to laugh because I call him my little guy but he's 6'2"" and 235 at 15 years old.  He's been busy because of football season coming up, and the coaches in the high school couldn't wait to get there hands on him.  He does this cross fit training and at 14 he dead lifted 400 pounds, just did a back squat at football of 365.

Archer, you know there are a bunch of great fishin areas up here in NE PA. Maybe we can meet up on the ice sometime somewhere. Up at the 'pack, Whiteoaks, Prompton, Promisedland... wherever.

About jigs and such, you're gonna need a bunch of different types for each lake or species. Spoons and flashy stuff for crappie,  and small horizontals for gills and perch but I had a lot of good luck with teardrops last year. Bass will hit anything when they feel like it. Get a few different colors of each too. I was fishin at Whiteoaks last year with some buddies and I was working a slow bite. About 25ft away a buddy was having a slightly better time but his fishin partner that was workin a hole just 4ft away from him was slammin gills and crappies one after another. He had a teardrop with a blue sparkle to it. We all looked in our boxes for blue sparkle and couldn't find anything to match. he had a nice bucket full when he left

Hope to see ya on the ice this season.

Enjoy the Custom Jigs&Spins catalog try not to go to crazy with purchases. I can see why the football coaches are interested in your son. Given his deadlift weight he must have good leg and lower back-core strength. The Cabelas store in Hamburg,PA. is impressive I have friends in the Reading/Shillington ,PA. area so stop in at the store when visiting with them. Custom Jigs&Spins does sell a couple different jig kits which will save you some money over buying the jigs separately.

Hey how's your opinion on the inline reels?  Bought an eagle claw one last year for me and the wife, sent mine back big disapointment for me but the wife's was really nice worked well.
Title: Re: Most favorite jigs for panfish
Post by: mr.clean on Aug 17, 2015, 03:40 AM
I have not experimented with glow jigs enough to have a solid opinion on them think like anything else there will be times when they are the ticket and other times it will not matter. Just a word of caution on Wolfram/Tungsten jigs many have thin-fine wire hooks that bend or break easily also paint on jig is subject to chipping if removed with standard pliers or forceps. There are forceps with plastic dip coating available for use with tungsten jigs. Go to the Jigs community/board and look for threads  on Bratner or Branter jigs (not sure of spelling) from pictures posted in one thread you will see these jigs have some serious glow when charged.
When it comes to in-line reels I've only used ones with a 1 to1 retrieve  not the multiplier reels. I have two combos a Frabill 27 inch quick tip rod that came with a 101 reel and a No.8 Fishing Code Blue ultralight 24 inch rod with No.8 Code Blue reel . I never  got into fly fishing so found it had to get comfortable with the Frabill 101 reel as it sits close to the reel similar to a fly rod-reel setup . On the Code Blue the reel attaches to rod similar to a spinning outfit setup with which I'm more comfortable also found it easier to grasp reel knob with gloves on hands . Many companies now sell reels with interchangeable reel seats . Frabill now includes two different seat with most of their in-line reels.(For example there is model 101A which comes with a fly rod and spinning type seats. Again I would suggest looking through the Equipment community/Board for threads. You can try either of the search feature here on Ice Shanty. (upper left corner of page ,under sponsor's hyperlinks center of page.  Hopefully the search feature works for you many members have had problems with it in the past two months.

If it don't glow, it don't go, lol! Glow is great, like Mr.Clean said, sometimes it's just the ticket and sometimes it doesn't matter. The thing is if it doesn't matter then no big deal but if it does matter, it's good to have. Not all my jigs glow but when there's a lot of snow on the ice and it's real dark under the ice or when I'm fishing at night, I want that little extra glow.

Plastics are great, they can give your jig more action that can make finicky fish bite. Even when I use platics on my jig I will usually tip with a spike or grub. But that's just me, I like meat ;)

Tungsten jigs are great, very heavy for their size. Doesn't really mean much if you fish mostly shallow lakes. A lot of the lakes I fish are 10ft or less, I don't need too much speed to get the jig back down. But when I fish the 'pack, or Francis Walter it's nice to be able to get the jig back down fast.

Inlines are great. I hate it when my line coils all the way down to the jig cuz you can't tell when you get a light hit and the jig isn't moving right and will often spin none-stop. If I'm fishing shallow, I can straighten my line by hand but the line won't twist coming off an inline reel.  But I've read good and bad reports about most of the reels out there, even the more expensive ones. Regular fly reels are ok for shallow water but they usually have a 1:1 retrieve and wouldn't be so hot in deep water and they don't have a free spool. You need to pull and drop.  The eagle claw got some really good reviews but the drag isn't that hot. From what I've heard (no, I don't have one) they are great for panfish because the drag really doesn't matter as much.

My favorite jigs for panfish are 2.5mm, 3mm, and 4mm tungsten jigs. Wolfrath is nice, but I also have some Skandia and CJ&S. I use 5mm or even 6.5mm sometimes but I find that smaller presentations generally get me more fish. I only use tungsten, unless I am fishing teardrops and those I make myself with blades and solder. This past season I found that jigs with blue and black were the hot ticket, with glow and green being a close second. I fish these 99% of the time with plastics, I love the challenge. My favorite plastics are whip-style baits and also Little Atom Micro Nuggies. My best colors are clear glow, red, black, and purple. I fish inline reels on QuickTip rods like the ones from Frabill and work them with a small, fast, jigging motion with brief pauses every now and then when my wrist is tired. In my opinion size and shape of the jig and plastic is more important than the color, but don't be afraid to experiment if the bite seems to be slowing. I like to have 5 or 6 rods rigged up so I can keep dropping down different combinations to coax reluctant fish into biting.

Tight Lines!

I see a lot of you guys go with some pretty small jigs when the bite gets slow, didn't really try that last year when it slow.  With the smaller jigs are you getting a lot of smaller fish?
Big red shack I agree with you 100 percent I should have at least 4-5 rods rigged ready.  I just have to convince the wife. Lol ::)

Super small jigs don't mean small fish. When the bite is off often the big fish are still there just not in a kamikaze mood. Since they don't have hands to feel with they'll often mouth something to get the feel and taste it while it's there, easy pickings when it's slow. Watch fish in an aquarium, half their time is spent tasting the fresh crap from the fish above them, seems the only way they can tell edible or not

Swift, thank you keep those tips in mind.  When I was younger I used to fish all the time, then I got married.  Well that didn't go so good.  So I figured I would try it again.  (My wife is sitting next to me) and let me tell you how wonderful that is.  Lol. Have two boys and they ruled the roost little league coaching for 12 years, then football and of course they had to try basketball.  I am a archery fanatic, so that's about all been doing.  Getting back into the fishing and didn't realize how much I missed it.  The hard water has got the whole family hooked, including the wife.  A friend told me about ice shanty, so I started reading articles to try and catch up on new techniques.  Just how much the gear has changed is unreal.  Really appreciate how the guys are willing to share the secrets and know how's. Thanks everyone really a great and helpful site.

a lot of times when atmospheric pressures are fluctuating the fish just won't feel like eating big. They will look for smaller meals. Sometimes the natural foods will be so abundant that they will be stuffed on them and really couldn't fit another bite, but then our tasty little morsel bounces by so they might take it. But at other times, they like a great big active meal. So be ready for those times too cuz often, they won't waste time with little dink snacks. A pimple, or kastmaster or jiggin rap or something like that will be just the trick.

tungsten. 3 -5 mm.
deeper i fish, the bigger/heavier i use. 3 mm takes too long to fish schools in 25' or more. night time i use larger size and glows.
i use 3 brands the most and trying another this season. no clam stuff here of any kind. its all junk in my eyes. no lead jigs either. they are banning them in some states already.
one of my "go to colors" is mad rat by kodiak.
another is school bus yellow by wolfram.
another is alien glow dot.
another is black w/glow dots.
white glow with black dots or stripes by bently and the others.
blues, greens and gold metal work well too.
mainly i look for jigs that have a glass bead after the body to help hide the hook shank and offer glow for low light and night fishing being it gets dark so early in the winter.
trying brantner this season. i placed an order when they had their wedding discount and they look great and supposed to one of the best glows available.

little atom plastic, for the most part, is what i use in plastics. the wedgee is my "go to". great action and good for schools that are in a feeding frenzy. when they are just looking at bait, then spikes only. primarily i use spikes and trying the plastics to see what they do with them when thy start slowing down. like late to mid winter. one lake i fish shuts down completly before spring and so i fish a different lake with different stradegies.

for removing them, another thread has been started just for that. the fish tooth pick sounds good, but i use a pair of short jaws hemostats and keep the jaws opened some so they push the hook back. i don't clamp them. they are handy for removing inserting jigs (when your jig box is over filled) back into the jig box slits. i keep 2 jigs per slit.

3300 thanks for the info.  Gives me some more options to look at.  I'm really looking at the plastics this year, give me a shot see how well they work for me.  Like I said just getting back into the ice fishing, it was late when we got out last year.  I'm looking forward to hitting first ice this year.  Just Trying to get everything ready so as not to be running around at the last minute. Great tip on using hemostats  for jig box.

I understand what u guys are saying about going to smaller jigs when the bite is slow.  Now when you guys start fishing are you starting off with 2 different sizes and watching what's getting the most bites?  I just never really tried going to small jigs like that, makes sense, can't wait to try.  I always tried the different colors,  are selection of jigs here back in the day were mainly tear drops fished a foot off bottom, what we were taught.
Now for the question that has always bugged me(maybe u fishing gods have the answer) lol. How come two holes maybe a foot apart, and one hole produces fish 10-1. I even switched poles just to c if it was the bait. Same depth same bait Y.
Son had first scrimmage yesterday, unfortunately me and the wife both had to work. Thank god grandparents, they were there for him.  Well he didn't start but was in the game shortly after it started, both ways. Had three tackles and 4 assists. But from grandpas report he was very impressed, which says a lot. Can't wait till this Friday, another game. Oh dad and mom will b there. Just a proud dad sharing with new friends.

usually I have a few rods rigged and ready to go. I'll have a small horizontal jig, a vertical teardrop and a spoon of some type. usually they will be personal favorites or whatever I was using the day before. What I use first will depend on what I'm targeting first. Usually perch, so I'll start with a vertical teardrop or blade and a waxie or other grub.

Generally start with the 3mm/#16 hook as my base and may go smaller if need be. Rarely need to go deeper than 10'-12' but will start larger if the water is deeper or at night. Black, Gold, Red with Glow Red at night is about all that's used. If they're biting they'll hit nearly anything, if not they tend to lean towards smaller offerings and I'm already there. Golden wither way

http://www.kjbplastics.com/joomla/  Depends on what you're trying to imitate but use the Hummer, V, Tri-tail and Sm Globe a lot in the more natural colors. Earthworm, Pumpkin, Crayfish and Black see plenty of daylight action. 50 packs are a good deal, plastic has plenty of action and very durable. Had fun with the Torpedo on horizontal 1/64 and 1/80oz jigs, decent pinhead minnow imitation

Pautzkes Liquid Krill & Bog Baits Leech Oil for nymph, scud, and leech acting plastics, or whichever Smelly Jelly fishy scent I happen to be carrying that day for minnow looks. To me even the scented plastics still smell like plastic and it needs to be covered, doesn't take much on a small presentation

2# super high tenacity by asso from link swift provided. use a backer line and then spool up witth ice line of about 50-70 feet. comes in 50 yard spools. if you do it right and can use less than 50 feet each reel you use, you can do 3 reels and when its worn, say one season, strip and flip it and use the other end if you want to save even more cash'ola.

Any of you guys using spoons for panfish?  I was watching a video where these guys were using spoons and hammering them.  I just thought they were to big. Any suggestions on spoons and size would be appreciated.  And are you guys tipping with bait or plastics.  Do these spoons have treble hooks?
Title: Re: Most favorite jigs for panfish

slendor spoons from custom jig and spins (IS sponsor), try what works for you. i use lots of spikes on a treble and some on the straight hook converion/chain single hook.
i only use spikes when not using plastic.
only time you don't tip a hook is when it has a bead on the hook of the spoon.

Heres my go to:
Clam Dingle Drop XL in glow red tipped with a maki plastic
Northland Impulse jigs, comes with a plastic minnow already rigged and has scent inserted in it
A Rat Finkee tipped with a crappie nibble
Custom Jigs and Spins demon
A northland Forage fry jig tipped with a minnow for crappie

I have 4 rods all rigged with the jigs listed above so if ones not working then I move on to the next quickly. Not a bad idea to have multiple rods with an assortment of different presentations. Havent used jigging spoons before so couldn't give an opinion. Panfish scents seem to work wonders for me as well. Makes them finicky crappie take a taste

You guys bother setting tip ups while jigging?  I try to set a couple,  really like the polar tip ups.  The kid caught a nice bass last year 20 inches 5 pounds. He was stoked.  Ust run big shiners on them.

Most of the time I set up tip-ups when I'm jigging, the only time I don't is when I only have an hour or two to fish.

we are only allowed 3 lines here so I jig one pole with the vexilar and run 2 tip ups for the northerns .whenever I go icefishing I always use this strategy.

Rarely use a tip-up while panfishing. 1 working the water column with the MarCum and 1 or 2 deadsticking on or near the bottom for the belly scratchers

I like to get right to jigging, set momma up first then start hole hopping. The boy likes to set them after the bass he caught.  So I don't think I'll be chasing many flags, maybe just to take pics.  Did buy an LX5 last year really want to Lear n the full benefit of it this year, play with it more.  Again it was confiscated by the kid as he was off checking holes.lol. I told him he better save to get his own this year.

I had dropper chain/rig on spoons Hali comes to mind ..but with a plain treble hook as opposed to the epoxy "eye" on the CJ&S model . Mostly a perch rig/use

from the product description

Replace the treble hook of your favorite Custom jigs & Spins Jigging spoons and you can create your own custom dropper rigs. You can put the Pro Finesse Dropper Chain Hooks on all the sizes of Slender Spoons, Demon Jigging Spoons, Stingers and VertiGlow Tackle Lightnin’ Spoons. Popular bait choices include waxworms, spikes, perch eyes and minnow heads

Will change the action of some lures

I've always liked using the 1/32 Foxee Jig ...... until it was discontinued. I would buy them on Ebay when ever they showed up. Out of frustration I went ahead and had a company CNC a mold for me along with the jig head. I've been making quite a few with some great color combinations.

jimfly, a buddy of mine gave me a few of them in white a few years back. I don't recall the weight but they are a pretty good size and the perch love them. What do you use for the rubber body?

Spider I never used them.  I thought they were using them on spoons.  I might pick up one or two to try on a spoon.  Been busy working non stop, doing a siding job for a friend.  The heat is putting a beating on me.  Once I get some time I'm going to start picking stuff up that I need. Like I said it's been 20 years so I need a bunch.  Going to try pick up some descent rods first, still undecided on reels.  Wondering if the inclines are an advantage or not.  Then start looking at jigs to order. I value all ur guys input been a big help in the right direction.

Well fish-kabob appreciate the input.   And it's great being back, can't wait to get a full season under my belt again.  Didn't realize how much has changed, we just had tear drops, and then they came out with a banana jig that was awesome.  This jig out fished everything else we had back then, sat horizontal in the water.been busy helping a friend doing siding on his house, heats been. Brutal. Yet all I got on my mind is ice fishing, think I got the bug lol.

custom jigs and spin has the same thing in a wedge tail thick based fine tip of the wedge tail really attracts them in when jigged a lot...
