Fenwick Elite Tech Ice Rods
« on: Oct 09, 2011, 11:54 AM »
Picked up the 27''M yesterday. The rods are styled just like the elite tech walleye rods with the rubberized cork handle. Man are they nice. Retail for 30 bones.

They look like a nice rod except I like being able to place the reel wherever I want on the rod handle. With the fixed design of the fenwick elite tech this isn't possible.

I just picked the new In Fisherman  Ice Fishing Guide and saw these. They look well worth the $30.

I saw these at Scheels the other day. Very nice rod. I really like that cork handle on there.

That does look nice..I just ordered a 25" ultra light today, can't wait to get it. What kind of lure is that?

Normally I would agree, but after holding the 27 in medium with reel installed
, this handle fits/balances perfectly for me.

I will try to find one to check out. It's just that I generally find myself with short handle rods and the reel near the back as I prefer to hold my rod "pistol style" when I am sitting in my shack.

I saw these at FF today and was on the fence about them and still am. They look nice and from what I could tell feel nice, however, as mentioned earlier, I was unsure about the reel placement. Wish I had time to try one with a reel installed.

I bought the 25" UL and a 28" ML from midwest hunters outlet a couple weeks ago.  I see that they have now raised their price from 18.99 to 19.94.  They are listed as "coming soon" but my UL shipped in a few days and the ML about a week later.  Cost me $6 shipping to Iowa.  Here is the link.....get em while they're hot

That's a great price. They are supposed to retail at $30.

I thought it was a good price also!  I first saw them listed around July, I emailed them and asked when they would be in stock, they said they were not sure.  I then emailed Fenwick and they told me the rods would be in stores the first of November.  Then a few weeks ago I saw them starting to show up on ebay for 30, so I figured I better order a couple before they increased their prices!!

Reeds Sporting goods is also selling a combo with a Pflueger ice reel for around 50 or 60

I went to the store thinking i was gonna get the 27"m but ended up getting the 28"mh. I'm gonna put it in an automatic fisherman for trout and the medium seemed a little wimpy.

I got the 25" UL,  With  my reel attached it is balanced perfectly for me. With the tape on ones I just slide em until they balance on my trigger finger, this one does that all by itself. The perch are gonna catch he.. this winter.
Bring on the ICE!  :) ;D

Anybody notice that this tapered piece that goes on top of the handle joining the blank is missing? I wonder why they left it off on final production models?

I just got this E-Mail from Fenwick regarding the missing part.

The metal piece you referred to was removed during production of this rod. Updated pictures will be added to our web site and sent to our customers soon.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Wow... that's quite the catch. I'm sure you surprised them when you brought that up to them.

Yea. This was the picture I e-Mailed them. I guess it really didn't do anything, but make the handle a little more fancy. Until I got my rod, I didn't realize that the top piece floats over the blank when tightening or loosening the hooded reel seat.

I would think that metal piece would wear the blank when jigging or fighting fish.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Looks descent...I'll be grabbing a combo to try...I already got the flueger rod combo, nice all around combo, a little noodly though for jigging finicky fish. Anyone pick up a ice blue pro yet?

I ordered an UL and a MH from Reeds for $50 with a free hat.  They aren't bad rods.   There was a few things I didn't like about them, so I sent them back.   I didn't like the reel seat.  It's heavy which is not a real big deal, but it puts the reel down too far where I can't reach the blank with my finger comfortably.  More of a down sized open water reel seat than ice fishing one.

The MH had a pretty good action, just didn't care for the reel seat.   The UL was like a noodle, way too soft for me, a spring bobber would of been dancing all around while jigging.   I'm all for a power noodle, plain noodle, no.

In my experience, if you look you can find cheap rods that are pretty good.  I found some at Scheels that were on clearance for $10 that I like better than the Fenwicks.  If you can't find a cheapo you like, most of the time you're better off getting a high end rod.

Like I said, not bad, but I'd rather buy one St.Croix or put that money towards a Thorne Bros.

I got some ULs for the pannies, but was wondering what you guys would recommend for jigging some walleys. Going to try it for the first time this year and was wondering if I should go with the ML or the M.
