Lithium Polymer cells have been used in the RC plane and copter industry for 20 or more years.
In the early days one would have to carry them in a ceramic or fireproof bag as they have a tendency to go nuclear and are almost impossible to extinguish (only a halon extinguisher will work).
Time will tell.
